Basic questions from an OLD FFXI playerFollow

Whats good everyone, Big Nasty Kail Risu here. I used to play FFXI a while ago and making the jump to FFXIV has been a little awkward.

First of all...I'm unsure whats cosmetic and whats meaningful in creating a character. I personally hope I didn't make any wrong choice in character creation in choosing guardian and what moon/sun and all that. Here are my questions.

I had to pick a job class. Great! Cant Wait! Wait...wait...Hand? War? Land? Magic? What's this? Oh obviously these are categories of combat classes, right? Wrong. Hand and Land are crafting classes. Are they saying thats all i do with these classes? Are they also saying that a pugilist cannot craft? I'm quite lost in this. Can someone clarify?

Minor things involving navigation.

1)In ffxi, did I always have to hit space to start typing? That seems pretty uncomfortable.
2)Selecting characters. I try not to use the mouse as much as I can. Why do I always select myself first? Was this always the case in FFXI?
3)Battling. Do I have to select the attack EVERY swing? Again, this is new to me.
4)Map. Can I scroll and move the map as I view it?
5)Camera. Do I have to use jkli for the camera or can these things be changed?

A little assistance would be appreciated. If there is a different forum for this, I apologize...let me know.

No you do not (I am going to speak in present tense when speaking of XI, as it is still very much alive) have any of those issues in Final Fantasy XI. There are countless other examples of the development team taking what works well in XI, hitting it a few times with a sledgehammer and releasing it in this game. These little things have many of us wondering why the **** they insisted on ******** up so many things we take for granted in XI.

To craft you have to equip a tool specific to that type of craft. Equip a weapon to change classes.

1) Yes. And it worked very well.
2) No. Then again, the targeting system in FFXI was better.
3) Yes. FFXI wasn't like that, though.
4) Yes, you need to use the camera controls though (ijkl).
5) That's all you get. You currently can't reassign those keys.

You do not have to hit space bar to start talking in XI. You do in XIV, and I find it annoying.

Thanks for the response! Great to know.

Was it always space? Wow, I havent played in a while.

1)How do I rest/kneel to regain health?
2)As a retort to your comment about classes and such, are you saying that my initial selectino of Pugilist was not a perm. one? I can change at will and the game will track my progress on each of them? This is different from the moghouse change, no? This also means that if you picked say...fisherman you of course can still battle, right? (Sorry if thats a redundant question).
3)Stamina. Every swing takes some stamina away. If I keep mashing the attack button, this will decrease my stamina of course, but is there a benefit to waiting until its regained in battle?

I think you just need to read more about the game in general. These are basic questions discussed in various places or ones that will be figured out on the fly as you play. But, yes, you will be able to switch classes after your initial choice.

I vaguely remember having to press space to start typing ages ago. But that may have been because I was playing mostly on 360 and PS2.

1.) Just put your weapon away and you'll begin regaining HP. MP cannot be regained in this manner.

2.) Correct. The class system is very much the same as FFXI. You can play all the classes as one character. But instead of having to go to a moghouse, you just change your weapon/tool where ever. However, you cannot fight (well) as a Crafting or Gathering class. I mean, you can throw rocks to stun the mob so you can run, but it's highly unlikely you'll be able to exp on mobs this way.

3.) The Stamina issue is strategic. If you keep your stamina at the bare minimum, you'll have a hard time stunning mobs well. If you keep it in the middle you can use emergancy stuns and such sooner. I think it'll have a bigger impact later in the game when more strategy is required.
