Is transportation really an issue?Follow

Let me start out by saying that I absolutely love the game. However, I see the same flaws that everybody else does. It's just that for some reason they're not a deal-breaker for me for whatever reason. I do hope things get fixed though, and the sooner the better.

That said, one of the things that I've read a lot of complaining about in forums and reviews is the lack of transportation in the game. The chocobos and the airships aren't available yet, and this seems to be a negative mark for the game for a lot of people.

My question is... How is it any different from FF11? In 11, you needed to be level 20 on a job to be able to obtain access to ride the chocobos, and getting access to the airships was even more of a pain in the ***. In fact the only thing you would be able to access "out of the box" was the Selbina ferry.

I can't obviously speak for everyone, but personally it took myself longer to get access to these features in 11 than 14 has been out. So even if these features were implemented, how many people would really have access to them? I know there's people who've gotten leveled up very quickly and all, but I'm speaking on average.

I'm just kinda curious as to how the lack of chocobos and airships at this time has become such a big deal to what seems to be a lot of people.

I feel the exact same way you do. Transportation in 14 is insanely easy compared to 11. Apart from the Chocobo/Airship issues you already discussed there are a few other things that make it easier. Maybe this will change later, but so far I've had all the maps for all the areas I've entered. I didn't have to go find a random shop in a city and buy them. I didn't have a blanked out map I had to explore before features were revealed on it. I walked into the area and my map changed.

And then there's the walk from the main cities. Not only is the road from each city clearly marked on the map, there are very few places on the path from each city that are dangerous for a level 1/rank 1 to traverse. I made the trip from Gridonia to Ul'Dah in maybe 30 minutes while killing things and never once got lost or was in any real danger. The trip from Ul'Dah to Limsa Lominsa was just as easy. In 11 it was at least a 30 minute run from any of the starters to Jeuno, more time from starter city to starter city. Trying to do it as level 1 with no form of sneak and invisible was near suicide even if following whatever path you might find along the way (I'm looking at you Jugner...). Let's not forget that if you then set your homepoint in this new city at level 1 you were stuck there unless you wanted to make that dangerous run all over again.

Really.. it's almost as if everyone even forgot what it was like starting out in 11. I'm not even talking about launch, just in general (I started first day of ps2 launch).

I think the main reason for people complaining about transportation is the expectations we had. Early descriptions of the game spoke of being able to teleport around, I think a lot of us assumed it would be more available. But, as you said, it is still a lot easier to get around than it was when FFXI was first released.

I think it's almost TOO easy to get anywhere.

Before outpost warping, XI made you think ahead. Tele-taxis were popular, people used chocobos. Some places were a pain in the **** to get to (Cape Terrigan) and I'm glad for those outpost warps, but it was a bit like overkill. You were never actually in the zone - you warped there, 10 seconds later you were out.

It took away all the sense of being in the world. Teleporting around like a drunk Captain Kirk at grab a Granny night at the local singles bar does not an immersive MMO make. Chocobos, Airships, these seem real. This is real transport. Not some random spell you get at the start of the game which mysteriously recharges for no reason whatsoever.

I've found XIV has these same issues. Within a 5 minute run of Ul'Dah, I have access to 4 camps. FOUR. This seems a little ridiculous. And looking at the map, there's about 10 others I haven't got in this zone alone.

I think this is one of my main gripes with the game. Right now, I don't really feel like I'm part of the world. XI gave me that. VII/VIII/IX/X gave me that. Star Wars KOTOR gave me that. Mass Effect gave me that. (I still get goosebumps when I think about choosing between Ashley and Kaidan)

Somehow, SE's RPG's since XI just haven't managed to create the suspension of disbelief that they used to...

Then why does it look almost exactly like XI-HD, have the same jobs and crafts as XI, many of the same abilities as XI and the same production team as XI?

It *IS* FFXI-2. But with a few new bells and whistles. Which, right now, are making pooey noises instead of melodic warbling.

I remember in 11, having to plan out in great detail everything when I was meeting with a buddy to do some quests/etc.

I think the fact that teleporting is available from the start and then taken away from you when you over use it can cause the complaints. I think in time it will lead to people getting use to conserving anima. I also think we'll see the old school shouts for teleport rides. I can imagine folks with an abundance of anima offering taxi services for those eager to spend their balance quickly.

I like the threat of long travel...adds some thought to daily activities.

So far, it seems like it's mostly been a problem for people with extraordinarily high playtime who blew through their Anima rapidly (I being one of them).

I think SE just wants people to walk relatively short distances. Even the walk from Limsa to Uldah isn't TERRIBLE. Now if I'm going from Limsa to Gridania? Heck yeah I'm using Anima.

Even a moderate increase in anima regen would pretty well solve this problem. I play a lot these days and I still manage to hover around 50 - 60 anima (though I did have an emergency appendectomy last weekend that hampered my playtime and restored a bunch), so it's manageable if you're carefully conscious of it.
