You know, I actually enojy FF14. I think it's a solid game at it's core. I like the design quite a bit, and I like what I have played and seen. I see a **** of a lot of potential in the game, and I really do hope that it gets to the point where the bugs are over and forgotten, and people start enjoying it so the world can be expanded. The game can be fantastic.
So, really, I can personally forgive a lot of bugs and things, and I am ok with playing it now.
However, I can absolutely see why some people wouldn't want to play it. More than that, I can see why some people would be outright angry at the way this release was handled. I can't blame them at all. I hope that they give the game a chance to fix itself and try again in the future (rather than telling everyone it's terrible now and forever), but I can't fault them for being angry with SE.
This situation is a mess, really, a bad way to start off something that's meant to last for years and years. And it makes me really wonder how SE can stay so quiet. I've played FFXI since release, so I've known SE has never been really communicative with it's playerbase, but this is one of those times where they need to step up and say something.
Releasing an unfinished product with bugs and problems is one thing, but then to just let it sit there without reassuring the community or trying to get a handle on the bad press is another. Most any other company would have gotten in front of it by now and made an attempt to assure everyone that the problems are known and are being addressed. Releasing the game, then staying silent only adds insult to injury, making even more people upset.
I just don't get it. The very least they could do, seriously the least, is issue a few statements that they are aware of all the issues, and are doing their best to correct them and deliver the quality people expect. You know, do a little PR. It blows my mind that they won't do that, at least, just to help a little. If people felt like SE was on top of it, they might be a little more forgiving.
This isn't one of those situations you just let happen. They invested a bunch of money here, I can't really see why they wouldn't take a very small step and just... talk to the community. They need to do this, soon. I can't imagine what's going through their heads, why they haven't said anything at all...
tll;dr: SE should really put in the minimum amount of communication with it's customers on this one and do a little PR. It's pretty insane that they haven't said a single thing about this by now, or attempted to reassure people. You'd think it's standard practice for anything you've invested so much money and time into. It's amazing how much damage silence can do, and also how much simply communicating can help a situation.
