This is where useless rants go so here goes:

A month or two ago I was just starting to tell my friends that FFXIV was shaping up. With the info about Ver2.0 with release dates, I started telling friends they should consider returning at that time.

"They are really making sweeping changes. Battle is fun, targeting is fixed. New content is here with more and more on the horizon. The materia system is cool!"

Good stuff.

But then, the PL'ing debaucle.

It seems this game is going in the direction of, "Who the **** cares about leveling. Let's skip through to the end-game so we can spam the two end-game dungeons for a month and then get bored and quit."

I played that game before, it was called Kingdom Under Fire and it blew goat nuts. You have fun for a week or so. Then you get in a party with experienced players, level up to max in a day, go fight the end boss the next day, and then you are done. Game over.

This game does not have enough end game content to support this mentality. It never will. As we all know, hardcore players can clear new content faster then it can be created. Even if the success conditions are frustratingly random and the drop rates for loot is excruitiatingly low.

The only way to overcome this is to provide incentives for players to enjoy a variety of the content - with new players preferrably. It's not like leveling up was exactly satisfying. I'm quite glad that Leves are a thing of the past. Although some new Leves with some variety would have been nice. The most fun I've had are in the EXP parties, but after your third or fourth class leveling through Raptors you notice that there's not a lot of depth there.

It's like this game has fast forwarded to the end-end-game where everone is bored of everything and they haven't even started charging yet! They are going to make the same mistake as last time, premature action.

Predict: Game will take a massive hit to population at subscriptions and failure will ensue.

Remeber all the polls about who is staying and who is leaving? Well let's take a repoll now that the majority of the population has fast-tracked their way to every meaningful goal. You have a 50 in every class you wanted right? Just PL up to 40 and then Spiritbind Party to 50. 2-3 days tops. Lame.

So what do I tell my friends about FFXIV now?

"Well, I'm afraid it's turned into one of those games where you PL to the end and then complete the final dungeon and quit." They nod knowingly. We have all played that game before. You may be willing to play that game for free, but you certainly don't pay for it.

My hopes for the future are sputtering out yet again.

********

EDIT: My old signature. Leaving it here. I am curious if there will be changes to PL'ing when the party search is implemented.

Quote:
Yoshida: ...I believe that the Market and the party formation system are the next big issue so we are planning to use FFXI's system as a reference and make an adjustment as soon as possible.

Yoshida: Improving the linkshell system is our highest priority task after the party search function, so we plan on doing so in patch 1.21. However, it involves a very complex script (which is why we haven’t been able to make improvements yet) so we appreciate your continued patience in the matter!

One thing I don't understand is why does SE think people are going to subscribe when the game in this state. 2.0 might be worth a subscription, but everyone I know who played XIV during the past few months has already quit the game exactly because of that. XIV has a small population as it is, introducing a monthly fee will just kill whatever was left of it. That's my opinion.

Mistake 1.0

So over a year ago Square went to market with a product that wasn't up to professional standards and expected consumers to pay a monthly fee for it. Quickly people realized this and left - crippling the launch and future success of the game.

Mistake 2.0

Now Square is relaunching the same product - a year from now - but is rushing to charge consumers today for an unfinished product. Same mistake different year.

Oh and this is still the ground breaking next gen MMO that doesn't have jump right?

FFXIV is heading into the slow burn of failure that Aion landed in.
#306Redyoshi, Posted: Dec 04 2011 at 12:42 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'd say most people who stuck with it for this long will come back once 2.0 is released. Sure the ideal would be to maintain free trial until l 2.0 drops, so I doubt they'd be starting monthly fees unless they felt they absolutely had to for whatever reason. I'm not too concerned if people aren't playing right now while the game is undergoing these drastic changes, in fact I'd rather see the more fickle among us wait until the game relaunches with 2.0.

This is the complaints department. The complaints made here are for venting, not for critique. So far, this has been understood. I do believe you're the first person to have complained about complaints made in their proper place, the complaints department. Please refrain from complaining about complaints made in the complaints department.

Now, as for my complaint. I did return to the game after several months of inactivity. I have, as of late, left again. This is due to having leveled every class but the three I want to level. I am waiting for more content to play.

Additionally, before leaving the first time I burned through every crafting class to 20. I will never get those hours of my life back. Button spamming was not at all fun by any stretch of the imagination.

Sorry if I offended you (truly, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, not sarcasm in the least). It was not my intent to "complain about complaining", rather I was simply offering another point of view in the interest of discussion. I usually use the "Live Forum Updates" option so I honestly didn't notice I was posting in the "venting" section of General Discussion, as opposed to the general discussion section of general discussion. My mistake.

...talking about how SE didn't add jump when the game launched a year ago isn't helping anything.

I'm not saying ignore the past, but there's a difference between constructive criticism based on past mistakes and hostile ranting over spilled crusty milk. IMO the OP falls in the latter.

Red,

Way to miss the point.

The criticism was: They - SE - is mirroring its first launch. They are repeating their initial fatal mistake - launching a product that is not worth the money they wish to charge for it due to it's lack of basic polish, proficiency and professionalism.

Basic functions such as jump, auction house etc are still not in the product and despite this fact they are demanding payment on the promise some of these things will (may) eventually be added. This is not even touching the lingering problems which have been improved but not adequately solved.

As far as your attack against my post. I find it far more "hostile" and "stale" to pollute forums with the white knight do-no-wrong heroism you peddle in the absence of accepting a blanket obvious failing on the part of SE.

There's no need for me to rant. I have nothing at stake. I don't play the game and given SE's current strategy I don't plan to and from the look of things not many do.

With the coming new year of SWTOR, Guild Wars2, The Secret World, and TERA not to mention currently available MMO options and the plethora of great Single/Multiplayer games out there - only diehard loyalists will see FFXIV as worthy of their time and money and look forward to it's snail's pace of progress. But by all means to each their own.

A toast to your tea cup.

That's it for me.

They really should have fixed AFK PL'ing long ago. Too late to fix it now, the damage is done.

My complaint is lack of auction house, there is going to be one in 2.0 right? even ff11 had an ah....

If there is no ah I won't sub nor will any of my friends, it's just a sign of bad design right off the start. I quit 1 month when the game first released and checked back every so often, read every major patch that was released, still no big relief from then. The retainer system was god awful and disrespectful to the paying players, some web based games even have auction houses...

Anyways that's my complaint, if ARR won't have an auction house + charges players per month + is recovering from a multiple year failure then... = doomed.
