There has been alot of talk about Summoners being added to game fairly soon( 2-6 months from now).

I just have to say I am most excited about this Job. in FFXI the summons looked freaking awesome just imagine what the summons are going to look like with these beefed up graphics.

That is all Discuss. ^^

Seeing as to how they are trying to avoid adding any conventional Final Fantasy job to the game; chances of SMN being added is somewhat doubtful, unfortunately.

Maybe under another job title with a mix of other skills? Seems to be the standard format for jobs.

There has been NO mention of summon job in XIV and the leaked list of jobs that haven't been implemented does NOT list summoner.

From what they mined in the .dats, Archanist might summon traps and weapons, sorta like Shaman of WoW.
To me, Mystic just screams "Summoner" though.

If by recently, you mean it was in the original release of the game, you're right.

Also, I believe it was already stated by the devs that the Summoner job/class as we know it would not be implemented, as avatars/eidolons/whatever have a crucial place in the storyline.

Anyone else think the 12 guardians are actually summons, and everyone will get one summon?

Q. I get that there are twelve guardians, but what type of influence will the one I select exert over my character?

At present, the guardian selected during character creation will have no significant impact within the game world. In the future, when new features impacted by or related to a character’s guardians are implemented, we will also be presenting players with the option to choose a new guardian. You may offer your piety to the deity that most closely reflects your character’s personality, or perhaps the guardian worshipped by the nation in which your adventure begins. Another option is to select the guardian under whose moon your character’s nameday falls. Or you could be as capricious as the gods themselves, and simply pick one on a whim!

And if by original release of the game, you mean the first expansion pack, you'd also be right.

I was under the impression that summoner was in the game from the begining, however impossible to unlock due to not every weather type needed to unlock it was in the game.

Wrong. Summoner was introduced when the Rise of Zilart expansion was released. Although it was not made part of the expansion as were DRG, SAM and NIN, you *did* have to have the expansion in order to get any of your avatars beyond Carbuncle. I always thought it not making it part of Zilart was meant to make it a "teaser"--a glimpse of Zilart to encourage you to buy the expansion.

Of course, SMN has always been there for NA customers, since NA release was after RoZ (and RoZ was bundled into the NA release).

This was discussed quite a bit on the beta forum. Several ideas were mentioned, including giving summons to existing magic users (and those to come like arcanist), adding a new class that's like a hybrid (i.e. geomancy + summoning), ritual magic that takes several people to accomplish (this is alluded to for the amalj'aa summoning Ifrit), or people picking one summon as their own to use across all classes and possibly add another element of character growth (my personal favorite).

Basically, there are a lot of ways they can add summons without adding summoner.

Yes, you did have to have the expansion to get the extra avatars, but it's my understanding that the job itself was in the original release of the game. If you have proof to the contrary, I'd love to see it.

It came out with the version update to initialize RotZ content, but RotZ itself didn't go live for a couple more days. It got added with the rest of the Zilart content but you didn't need to access Zilart zones to unlock it (like you had to with DRG/SAM/NIN), so you could actually unlock the job before Zilart actually went live. You couldn't get any main summons though, because all of the fights were added into RotZ zones.

05/16/2002: FFXI PS2 goes on sale, Service begins!
The names for the twenty worlds were revealed: Bahamut, Shiva, Titan, Ramuh, Phoenix, Carbuncle, Fenrir, Sylph, Valefor, Alexander, Leviathan, Odin, Ifrit, Diabolos, Caitsith, Quetzalcoatl, Siren, Unicorn, Gilgamesh and Ragnarok. On the first day of service, there were so many access requests that the servers were down, and disconnects were common. This was completely fixed by May 19. Due to the loss of service, free play was extended past the end of May until the end of June.
