Think FFXIV is bad? Possible reason why.Follow

There have been major complaints about FFXIV since its release and there may be a hidden reason why. It seems SE has been working on a new MMORPG (and one much closer to thier heart)!!!!! This MMO is called Wakfu.

http://www.wakfu.com/na

This is based off another short series of games called Dofus.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakfu

Since starting work on their new opus along with Ankama Studio, they have devoted every man hour to make sure their team of dofuses (as they lovingly refer to them as) are working nonstop on this turn based MMO and pushing all other MMOs (FFXIV primarily) off to the side.

This has great potential of cource since SE decision making skills and mechanics fit perfectly with Dofus. It also has the potential to become big for a turn based French MMORPG. Because of the expected major success of this venture, Squareenix has been thinking of possibly changing their name to either Dofus-enix or Square-Dofus. This made me so excited that I wanted to sell my copy of FFXIV, but someone told me it needs to be repaired to 100% first and I don't have the required "pile of crap" needed to perform the repairs.

So in summary: SE released FFXIV the way it is now because of the new Dofus nature of the company.

All kidding aside, no matter how bad it may look now for FFXIV....I still have a sliver of hope SE will iron out the major issues and make FFXIV into a game to be proud of!

This game looks a lot better than FFXIV... Kind of sucks that they used Dofus as the basis for the game world, but the gameplay looks great.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I've played the beta for Wakfu before. I didn't play much, they've probably fixed it since, and there may have been other ways to buy things I didn't know about, but from what I saw the bazaaring system was much worse than the wards. I seriously remember walking into an area that lagged to the point of crashing because of all the bazaars in it. As laggy and sucky as the wards are, they've never lagged to the point of crashing for me. >.>

If you did actually play it before (game hasn't been in closed beta very long) then you indeed played a closed beta version. How could you know whether or not that's been fixed? Do you think the game would launch with it crashing like that? That's the only thing you have to say about the game? Seriously your paragraph basically said nothing at all.

Uh...

Not even going to lie I'm an art fiend... So the Art Direction is def. nice. I would rather have this on PSP though than a MMORPG.

Anyone know who did the art?

A company the size of SE will have many games in development. The fact that there is another one being worked on is no shocker to me at all. Each game has its own team to work on each game.

While SE was working on FFXI, it was also working on FF12 and then in turn, 13. Just because the team that works on FFXIV (and might be the same time as FFXI) sucks, doesn't mean that they shouldn't have other teams working on other games, and vice versa.

Developers =/= publishers. SE is not developing this game, they are publishing it. There is an enormous difference. All of the actual work done with the software itself is being done by the French studio, not SE.

And you believe publishers don't have a say in what they publish? Mmmkay...

Of course the development is from another team (or even being outsourced) but soon as you associate yourself with it. That's your baby too...

This is like saying the auto repair shop down the road can only repair one car at a time.

A game studio can work on multiple projects at the same time believe it or not. There are certain departments that work on multiple games (such as language translation for instance) while others are devoted to one game for years (such as 2d/3d artists and AI).

SE actually has publishing rights over alot of games (I'm assuming typically in markets outside NA), that they most likely have never touched.

What Xen said.

I've been watching Wakfu with interest over its development. SE adding its name to the credits was a very recent development. They basically had no involvement in actually making the game.

Sort of like SE tried to do with GamesCampus a few years back and the Concerto Gate debacle (if anyone remembers that).

It depends entirely upon the terms of the publishing agreement - in particular, how much money the publisher contributes to the development process. If the developer needs money from the publisher (in the form of an advance against royalties) to complete development, the publisher gets creative input. If the publisher has specifically contracted the developer to make a product based on the publisher's own IP, the publisher gets creative input. Almost without exception, if the publisher isn't paying any of the development costs, they have no creative input whatsoever on the final product.

Given that Ankama Studio is making huge amounts of money from Dofus, it's likely that they paid for the development of Wakfu entirely by themselves. And they own the IP they're working with. Net SE influence = 0.

But hey, good going everyone for taking a joke thread like this seriously.
