What are the difference between Abilities and Traits?

I assume traits are passive like FF11, but what are abilities?

I just received the Fisherman's ability for Rank 10. Are abilities passive? or they require activation? They do not go on to the Action Bar, so if they require activation how does one activate them?

abilities are tied to crafting. They have a chance to be activatable during synthing.

From what I read earlier, you set them with the same command as actions.

/eaction <number> <trait/ability name>

I dont know that you can macro them. they pop up randomly under the wait command while synthing, if you see a scroll bar you can hit one.
