Why are some player's name dark gray?

It happened to me once. My name looks bright white on my screen, but LS mate said it was dark on their screen. I figure maybe it is because i was in a party. So I left party, but my name stayed grayed out on their screens.

So we moved few steps away from where we are (well more like 10-20) and my name became normal again.

Very strange.

It was because you were on a zone border and each of you were in different zones.

When on a map zone line, i.e going from Gridania to the forest, the names will grey out due to map change, before the last update people who bazaar'd in these areas had items corrupted and would also cause server downage due to these corrupt items. at least thats what i think it is

Actually from what I've seen it appears that in order for them to create seamless zones, they've overlapped the zone boundaries somewhat. I'll use the Ul'dah/Thanalan border as an example because it's obvious with all the people bazaaring there.

      Thanalan
--------------------

--------------------
       Ul'dah

Using the diagram above if someone was coming from Ul'dah and heading towards Thanalan they will not enter into Thanalan until they cross the top line. Someone coming from the opposite direction, heading towards Ul'dah, will not enter into Ul'dah until the cross the lower line. If they both meet in the middle area, before crossing the respective zone lines, they'll be able to see each other but their names will appear gray to each other. In order for both names to appear white one person would have to go forward to cross into the other zone, then head backwards to the border area to meet the other person again.

If you want to see an example of this head into Ul'dah from Thanalan and find someone with a gray name bazaaring at the gate. Head into the city itself, then run back out to the gate. You'll find that their name changed to white.

I'm curious, XelKarin, are you a fan of The Faerie Queene?

Actually, I can't claim to have read it. When I was a kid I was given a set of books which were a collection of fairy tales. The poem just happened to be in one of the volumes. I started playing my first MUD around that time and they required that the players use a fantasy role-playing name. I just picked one of those books off of my shelf and used the first name I found. I lost the books in 1999 when I was forced to move across country.

I've come up with other names for other MUDs and MMORPGs, but I used that in Medievia and FFXI. A few months ago, when I heard about FFXIV. I decided I'd use the name for that as well. Since FFXIV required players to use a last name, I decided to look up the name, find out what book it was and what the character's last name was. I discovered that it was from The Faerie Queene and since no last name was provided for the character, I decided to use Sarizen since he was a sarizen knight.

I figure that now that I know, I'll try to find a copy of it and read it.

I've noticed that sometimes people who are DCing or not fully loaded will have a grey name before the red DC circle appears
