Amazing communication from the director relating to the near future of the game. Awesome read!

Also see this from Ask the Devs:

This is fantastic information that we've been kept in the dark on up until now. It's fantastic to hear that nearly all of the complaints are being heard, and fixes are in the works.

Other than them saying "Ok fine here's your AH it'll be released tomorrow"... I'd say this is the best info we've received in a while.

Oh, and on top of all of this they're also giving everyone a second free month. =D

One says as soon as next month, and the other December...I'm leaning towards December. It's great they want to fix server lag, but Besaid has on average 1500 people on, and usually about 1000 when I play, there has to be some issue beyond too many people playing. If this game does live up to it's potential, there's going to be far more then 1500-2000 people online at once.

"Server Lag
Notable lag has been observed in certain areas of the game, particularly when a large number of players are gathered together. To combat this, such areas will be divided into multiple "sections" for the purposes of server-side processing, thereby reducing concentrated loads and subsequent lag on individual World servers.

Distribution of Enemies
In an attempt to further reduce occurrences of lag, we initially avoided placing a large number of enemies in close proximity to one another. With, however, the implementation of the measures mentioned above to reduce server lag, and as player concentrations are beginning to disperse from the starting areas, we will be looking into a redistribution of enemies that is more conducive to enjoyable adventuring."

They arent adding more loading screens are they?

Q. Return and Teleport have made travel within Eorzea quick and easy, but it seems like I am always running out of anima. Are there any adjustments being planned?
A. Yes. The first adjustment, which increased the speed at which anima regenerates, was implemented during a recent maintenance. The second adjustment, planned for the late-November version update, will see a significant reduction in the amount of anima required to teleport or return. To be specific, the cost for Returning will be reduced to 1, and halved for Teleportation to one of up to three "favorite" aetheryte destinations designated by the player.

For some reason AllTel Wireless commercials started popping into my head after reading this.

This is great, extended free trial, and a promise from SE that we'll have a good and proper game by December. This certainly is welcome news considering this past month. Thank you, SE. We can be friends again.

Great read, you're right :) Thanks for posting. This has me excited for things to come. Easy to get bogged down in the current state of the game, but it truly looks like a few months down the road, a lot of what bothers people will be dealt with.

Holy crap, just read over both articles and wow, talk about changes!

Pretty much covers all the things that I wanted updated/fixed, with the exception of chocobos and airships, lol.
Of note, the reduced anima cost (1 for return, halved for 3 "favorite" locations set by player), UI features and recipe list is awesome.

From the servers perspective the large zones are already divided into smaller zones (you can see this effect when other players names are grayed out and you can't interact with them), they are just going to further divide or gerrymander the zones to reduce server strain. From a client side you probably won't notice any negative side-effects.

They kidna covered this:
Quote:
Q. The lag in some areas is lowering UI and battle response times, making it difficult to play. Why is this happening?
A. Even if a World server is not crowded, a large number of players gathering in a single place would increase server load, adversely affecting gameplay. To alleviate this, we have pinpointed heavy-traffic areas and split up their processing duties over multiple servers, reducing the chances that a single server will become overloaded.

I for the most part agree with you, but I have to give them props for trying something new. Any MMO company can code an AH and implement it with ease, but it's interesting to see that they're trying something new. Kind of ballsy.

WITH THAT SAID, though, in its current state it's of course trash and I refused to even go in there until today's patch (which is still meh, but an improvement at least)

Looks promising. I am glad they are making these adjustments, most of them cover the majority of the problems I've been having, and adding an additional 30 days is just icing on the cake. I really want this game to succeed, there is obviously a lot of potential but in it's current form it was just terrible. I'm glad they are finally getting the message that they can't just keep everything behind the curtain and they have to interact with their buying public.

If Microsoft loosens up its online policies, a lot of games will be coming over to the platform. FFXIV isn't the first one I've heard this about. Hopefully they will do so, because I own a 360, and I much prefer sitting on a couch in front of a big screen tv, than sitting in an uncomfortable chair in front of a comparitively small computer monitor. I do prefer the keyboard over the controller, for combat at least, but if they tie the quickbar slots to the number keys on the chatpad, then that will resolve that as well. So here's me hoping that FFXIV sees itself on the 360 some day.

I agree. I think they gave everyone enough time to get all their feedback in, and really did prove that they HAVE been listening. On some levels it does make sense from a business aspect for them to have waited a bit on their official response to the poor feedback. I think their timing was excellent.

So basically now it's kinda as if we're all playing an open beta, except we get to keep our characters for the game's "official release" in December. =P

oh and you haters can't call it paid beta anymore thanks to the added free month. =D

You're really that pessimistic? They were pretty detailed about what they're going to add, there's not much wiggle room there for deception. Usually when a company makes a public statement with an additional 30 days free it means a lot more than "hot air". This wasn't some triply translated interview with some unknown game magazine in Japan.

Agreed, but this communication alone is a huge step for SE, you have to admit.

The extra free trial is immensely important, and actually makes me lean on the "They will hold their word" side. If they deliver next to nothing on the Nov Update i'll just cancel again before the first Dec billing.

For now you got me SE, My account is re-activated for now.

Quote:

To be fair for him, SE has in the past put fixes in an update's notes, only it's not fixed at all. And then they ignore it like they never said it was supposed to be fixed. As a concrete example the cure-binding effect in FFXI, which we all celebrated when they fixed it, only to log in and find nothing changed. They never spoke of it again.

There is plenty of past behavior to validate his attitude.

There is a lot of wiggle room in what they said.
Concerning the UI, does "The general layout of several menus will be adjusted" sound definite to you?
It's nice of you to give them the benefit of the doubt, though.

Edit/PS: I'd rather call it "experience" than "pessimism", hahahahaha! ^.-/

I have to admit, it's nice to see them reach out and actually offer a detailed plan. It's nice to see they acknowledge through the extended free trial that they screwed up pretty badly. And honestly, if they can do it on time, the changes they are making are absolutely steps in the right direction.

I may end up picking this game up eventually after all.

Good on you, SE. A little late, but glad to see it.

This is a great step in the right direction, will keep me playing for the foreseeable future. Hopefully they can follow through on the changes by December, I think it will make a world of difference to the frustration level of a lot of players.
That said, it's a shame we have to wait so long to see what they have in mind. They can talk of all the fixes and features they want, but I want to see how they plan on executing these on the servers.

Great news.

But 1 very important thing is missing....

Player Search????

I have had this ranked as my #1 fix since release, and still no mention of it - unless I missed it.

Also, where's the content? By December we will all be pretty damned sick of grinding out levels and ranks for no apparent reason. I suppose some of the NM's might be hard enough to be an incentive to keep building, but what about all of the other content? Quests and missions that give nice rewards and require more than just fetch/kill.

Ive seen this quite a few times.... Just so everyone knows you can move IJKL to WASD by deleting the WASD from Movement first then putting camera keys there.

To delete: goto movement, highlight W and push backspace. Repeat for ASD. Then goto Camera and put WASD and return to movement and put IJKL.

It can be done since open beta. (or vice versa, im not at home to look at which was which first. I have mine swapped)

edited - to swap camera/movement works to fit how the menu is set up.
