I wonder if SE would even consider this feature? I would love to see it for my iPhone as well.
I don't mean to demean you or anything, and I do think it would be a very cool idea, but SE will never do something like this. They aren't the type of developer that would ever consider something like this. Don't get your hopes up of something neat like this ever coming out of SE.
I'd go into more detail but right now I'm taking a break and am fairly mentally exhausted from some other work that I've been doing today. I'll leave it to someone else to cover this.
I can't image it would be all that challenging to implement (as opposed to writing a full game).
This is what I thought about a lot of the things that the dev team never did in FFXI (or took years to do). Even then, I don't think this would be as simple as you're making it out to be. SE would likely worry about abuses in the system, such as allowing/blocking access based on whether or not you're logged in, and where your character is located. They'd probably throw a fit saying that people could log out in the field, open up the app and work with the retainer despite the character not being proximate to the city. They'd also likely dismiss the concept because it detracts too much from the gameplay experience and doesn't fit in appropriately (like why retainers exist in the first place, because it fits in with their concept of the realism of the game). An app to subvert the process would likely be viewed as unfitting.
I guess I did go into a bit more detail, but now I'm hungry. Edited, Oct 19th 2010 3:47pm by bsphil
