Looking for tips on gatheringFollow

Just looking for any little tidbits people have picked up in regard to mining/logging. I seem to have trouble with logging in particular as it seems if I get a "You don't feel anything promising" on the first hit I usually fail to log anything with the remaining hits I have left (typically I seem to only get three chops). Also, on a side note, anyone know what the bronze sledge is used for? I assume it's another type of gathering deposit similar to the how a botanists scythe allows you to gather lush vegetation, but as of yet I've found no use for it.

Anywho, thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

As for the first part of your question -

If you have a repaired tool / upgraded tool, you should have more than 3 chops unless you are way off. I usually start out near the top of the chop cycle, that way if I get a message like "you find nothing promising" you know you need to try further away, like almost near the bottom of where you tried before. If you get something like "You are getting closer to the mark" Go just a few little notches down, like 1/2 sec worth wait time.

The Sledge is used for quarry, not for actual mining points. You can usually find these in caves. So yes, it is exactly like finding lush vegetation with the scythe.

As for logging, I usually divde the whole "pie" in 4 sections, and start logging at 1/4 from the top, then mid point, then 3/4.

As for the hint, I will look at them like this:

"You don't feel anything promising" - this means the perfect spot is not within the current "section or the section next to it".

"You feel something promising" - this means the perfect spot is within the section next to your current section.

"You're close to the spot but just can't make the final cut" - this means the perfect spot is within your current section, you can either try the same exact spot, or anywhere within the current section.

"You're getting closer to the mark" - if you start your first swing at the top (first section), and your second swing at the mid point and you see this message, then it means the perfect spot is at the last section.

"You're getting further from the mark" - if you start your first swing at the top (first section), and your second swing at the bottom (fourth section), then that means the perfect spot is at the second section.

The second way of doing it is start from the mid point, if it says "You don't feel anything promising", then you just pick either the top or bottom section, and try a random spot (better to be either very close to the top or bottom), then if it says "You're getting further from the mark", that means the perfect spot is on the opposite side. If it says anything other than that, that means you're at the right section, just need to get your next spot again.

The first way can get to the perfect spot easier and the second way is more precise, so if your Botanist is rank 5 and logging for grade 1 trees, it's better to use the first way. If your Botanist is rank 15 and logging for grade 1 trees, you can use the second way as you rank is much higher than the tree.

I think all gathering mini-game is is smiliar, so I am goign to share my fishing experience.

I find that the default message "You caught a fish and cannot reel it in" usually means you are within 45-60 degree arc of the sweet spot. I am not sure what the default message for Gathering is, but the distance should be similar.

You Greatly gained line (which is the 2nd closest message) means you are within 1 dot of the sweet spoot. That dot that moves aorund, you are within 1 width of it.

You gained some line means you are closer than before but more than 1 dot away.

The distance holds true on the reverse (e.g. fish is gaining line).

Thus, let say the mini game arc is

---------

for my first jig I would put the dot off center (left or right doesn't matter) but with less than 45 degrees distance from the edge.

------*--

if I get the default message 80% of the time if I place the dot exactly 45 degree's away I get the sweet spot

--*------

If the next message is fishing is gaining line, putting the dot at the end of the other edge usually is the sweet spot.

--------*

It is a pretty simple hot and cold game. Hope the explanation makes sense and can be adopted to botanists.

I do things slightly different.... (This is for Botany and Mining)

For Botany, I'll chop directly in the middle of the arc... if it says "nothing promising" I'll jump 1/4 of the way up the mark, if I get a "You're furtherer..." I'll just chop in the bottom quarter of the arc....

This is nice because if you are stuck with 3 chops.. if you get nothing on the first, you get a 50/50 chance to be right (either up or down)...

If you get more than 3 chops, you're pretty much guarenteed to get something, because you miss the first, figure out roughly where it is the 2nd, locate it the 3rd, and then obtain on the 4th. (Thats worst case scenario)

For mining, its very similar in that I allow the circle to go about halfway, then I make a small circle to see if I find anything, if not,(or further) I'll make a big circle and will get it...

In reading a bit more of the other replies, I realize that this is similar!!

Also, I guess as a side note, I would only be doing serious gathering where you can use your "Node Locating" ability... if you're just wandering around hoping to find a tree.. you're gonna be wasting a ton of time.... I'm kind of in this weird spot where I'm rank 16 on my gathering jobs... and I want to gather Grade 3's.. but without the ability, its a bit frustrating!

Is it just lag that causes the target to just random jump when clicked? Some times I swear it just goes completely to a random spot ><;;
