Virgin Broadband massive lag after midnight.Follow

Hello everyone.

I'm having a frustrating problem and I hope someone can help me solve this. For over a week now, the game runs smoothly until 12pm. Right on 12pm the server lag becomes so bad that I spend more time in game with S: 30-50 and R:0 than actually playing. It's not a throttling issue as far as I'm aware and this is very consistent. And since yesterday I get booted a lot during this time.

I'm in the UK and my broadband supplier is Virgin , 20mb.

Any ideas?

Well this isn't likely to help very much but if I had that particular issue, I would run a packet trace on my machine to see what IP's the game was talking to.

Then I would do a ping/traceroute to those IPs before midnight to measure latency and set a baseline.

Then I would do the same after midnight and see if I spot any differences.

An easier option might be to do some sort of internet speed test on your machine http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ before and after midnight to see any differences. That would tell you in a general sense but not if its something to do with the FFXIV servers or the specific route Virgin is taking to them.

I'm having the exact same problem. I'm on 50MB, and literally at the same time, I'm constantly R0'ing and basically having absolutely no realistic way to play.

I just pegged it to server pops going up cause of US prime or something, as Wutai is one of the more populated servers, but now, I'm not so sure.

If anyone can find some form of reasonable solution to this, I'd greatly appreciate it!

This is Virgin for you, they are restricting access and speeds at certain times. They do it to everyone and their use of the term 'peak times' means absolutely any time they feel like.

I did report to situation of BB and ISPs in the UK to square enix though. Hope it gets a little smoother for us soon.

I can somewhat understand throttling but throttling off peak makes no sense. I can do everything else fine and other MMOs fine as well. For some reason this is the only thing that suffers at this time. Anyway I've contacted SE and Virgin myself and hope something gets done about this.

It's because after midnight, most of the customers still playing are virgins.

I kid, I kid.

a while before last post I made I got a message from a girl who had been our engineer at a previous callout and she said that the works being done to integrate the 100meg service will be creating disruptions between 2am and 6am. I wonder if that had anything to do with what you are going through, if you're in a fibreoptic area.

That could be it, but it doesn't explain why things start getting very laggy from midnight. If that's the case then I hope the works don't take months...

BT lags really bad except between around 10pm and 4am for downloads, but it's always plenty fast enough to play anything except maybe MW2 (and even then, only because it doesn't have dedicated servers)

My brother and I are having EXACTLY the same problem.

We're with Virgin Media, every night from midnight BST onwards we're in and out of R0, and the game is unplayable. This is the best time for us to play as well.

Just for clarity, when I say 12 pm I mean Midnight.

I used to be on BT but found them to be terrible for online gaming. I've not had any problems with Virgin till now, this has been a very recent thing.

It didn't lag/R0 tonight! In fact, i've never experienced it so smooth.

Virgin fixed it maybe?

It's happening here too, From 12midnight til 12 midday, my 50 meg line caps at EXACTLY 1.48mbps everytime. It's definately not a fair usage cap because that doesn't effect 50meg users.

We phoned them up and they said there's currently work going on in our area, and at the end of the month our Broadband service charged will be waived.

Best bet is that it's only temporary, they're currently in the middle of upgrading to their 100meg service. Good news is that hopefully whatever your connection is, it should hopefully get faster at no extra cost like last time. So 10meg should become 20, and 20 meg should become 50 etc.

Oh and I strongly suggest you ask them for free stuff right now, they are absolute suckers, just say your net sucks and you want a free V+ box, and they will send you one right away.
