epic looking monsters?Follow

long story short, when i play mmo's i usually do it because of the pvp or questing/monsterkilling. monsterkilling (grinding) can become kind of boring if the all the monsters are looking the same or basically got a boring look.

so far, i have killed monsters looking like birds, rabbits, flowers, mushrooms, moles, spiders and horses (antelopes). in other words, monsters looking like animals. the coolest looking monster i have seen myself in ffxiv is the evil eye and the coolest i've seen on videos/screens is that big ogre. so to speak, i have seen two cool looking monsters whom deserves to be called monsters in this game so far. how about you guys? seen anything nice yet?
and yeah, i killed a wight or wright also, they were quite nice as well

I havent actually fought anything really cool-looking either. Wild Hogs and Antling Diggers were it pretty much.

And now that name will drive me nuts.

I'm hoping to see some cools stuff in Dec when the NMs are released. The game is still in its infancy, more mobs will be released + more content.

i checked some videos of ffxi and saw guys fighting really cool stuffs like cerberus, big shadowlords and other badass dragons (WITH BIG WINGS!!) and i wonder why SE didnt continue with that style in ffxiv? =(

You only watched FFXI footage worthy of video is your problem. You missed the first 75 levels of rabbits and funguars and goblins or mandys and crawlers. funguars and crawlers and the occasional gob over and over and over and over.... oh and how could i have forgotten crabs.... over and over and over... It was much the same except it was actualy dangerous to walk through the zones and dungeons

alright, so i guess there were much animals, insects, flowers and vegetables to fight against in ffxi as well then :-)

i guess its dumb to compare the online games to the main serie but in VI-XII you got to fight pretty epic monsters right away, to bad they didnt make it the same way here! would ease up the grinding a bit if you fighted cool stuff i guess!

I seriously spent like 5 minutes trying to figure out why you were calling pregnant women "Infernodrake" before I got what you were saying. XD

Anyway, yeah, haven't seen a ton of "epic" FF14 mobs yet. Though the Treant, Malboro, and Goobue were all pretty impressive to me. But the real winners are the FF14 style sheep, spriggan, and snurble. :P
The Sylph are pretty sweet, though. They just look cool.

FF11 did indeed have some great and elaborate monster designs, but yeah most of them came AFTER the main game was complete. The game didn't even have tonberries until the first expansion (god I hope FF14 gets tonberries... and behemoths :(...). When Chains of Promathia came out, the creativity really started to flow. Monsters called Empties with elemental cores... Shadow versions of all the player races and jobs, crazy Bugards with giant tusks, flytraps, antlions, Corse, etc. And the things that live in Al'Taieu, the endgame area for CoP, were (and are) my absolute favorite mobs in the game. Their design was just awesome. Here are a few:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Aern
-These guys came in any job type that a player could have, or in the case of one ultimate monster, ALL job types.

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Yovra
-Giant things that lived way up in the sky, and descended upon people who walked under them like UFOs (hence their nickname).

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Phuabo
-Large sharks that roamed underneath your feet in a water type area that you walked on top of (solid ground to you, simply water to them). Walking over one would cause it to dive upwards out of the water and fight.

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Ghrah
-Looked like a discoball when idling, with an elemental affinity/coloring that changed between mobs. Periodically broke down into pieces and rebuilt itself as either a bird, a spider, or a humanoid.

Later expansions added some stuff that was truely incredible, such as:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Dvergr
http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Vampyr
http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Caturae

But even some of the early mobs like Golems made me really curious about what SE could come up with if they had more freedom. I hope, really hope, to see some absolutely amazing monster designs, as well as some awesome locations. Some of the locations so far have been really great to see, but if you have ever walked around Al'Taeiu or many of the areas in ffxi, you'd know what I am talking about. SE could do something amazing, and I really want to see it.

For now, I would settle for just messin' with a mob that's really tall... like a Dhalmel. :P

No, there were Beastmen all around in the early levels in FFXI.

It looks like they have some really cool Beastmen models but they aren't using them except rarely. Why? Why is anything in this game the way it is? Nobody knows.

no... that is the leviathan from the Limsa Limosa storyline. You can see its size in relation to a gobbue and one of the flying robot things from the movie...

SE has said that many NMs will make morbols look small.

The pic is from a thread from dataminers... I don't understand what it is all about but it looked pretty cool.

Agreed, I was actually somewhat intimidated by the first crabs I saw o.o;

Other then that though I have to say not only have I not really scene much (Peists are interesting, the yowza lizard-spider things are kinda neat). There's not a whole lot of diversity in mob design so far.. Eorzea seems to have a marmot infestation.

Marmots are the new rarabs. Which leads me to wondering: Will we be saying, "No matter how high rank you are, somehwere there is a marmot that can kick your ***."?

I've seen 2 elements so far (1 in Gridonia quest, another in a cave somewhere). They're pretty cool looking... kinda like Pixies from XI, but they have a color to them according to their element.

I was also killed by a thing that looked like a Dragoon's Pet while exploring in the Highlands outside Limsa. I didn't get a good look at it because I was trying to sneak past a Fallen Something (had a Spear) and it aggro'd me from I know not where and at a decent range too.

There are some raptor looking mobs in the Shroud on the E/NE side of the map. And I've also got to say that Crabs and Lizards (Salamanders) are 1000x cooler in XIV than in XI.

But the similarities in mob progression is kinda sucky...

Rarabs - Marmots
Akbabas - Bats/Syphids
Worms - Moles
Lizards - Puk-hatchlings
Mandragoras - Dodos
Sheep - Goats
Crabs - Crabs
Pugils - ? Are there fish that hover above the ground in XIV?

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.
