Using higher rank/wrong class equips?Follow

Can someone please explain to me the disadvantages of using equipment which is too high level or not recommended for your class?

I'm going to start playing as Lancer soon and I'm gathering some equipment even though its hard to navigate the wards.

like for example would it be better to use a rank 1 lance until rank 9 to use a harpoon? or should I just start using the harpoon?

and I have a bronze chainmail that I was using on my gladiator, but I noticed LNC is not on the recommend classes. (I thought lancers wore chainmail x.X) so will the stats be nerfed somehow?

I would like to point out that sometimes equipping items just for fashion is ok >_> hence my leggings that do NOTHING for any of my classes but looks fabulous with my olive green cotton pants.

ahem. >_> but I /assume/ if you are not the rank or class that is optimal for the items then they will not work as intended.

I would also like to see what people have to say. As an Archer, most of the gear, that I have seen, where Archer is in the Optimal Class list, do NOT have dex/str bonueses. Rather, they have Mind or Int.

Most of the gear I'm wearing is for other classes so I can get the stat bonuses I want.

They give lesser stats than advertised on the item, you can see how much on your attributes bit. I think they tend to break quicker too, although I'm not really sure.

^ This.

I read somewhere that approximately 1/3 of the gears full potential is knocked off depending on what class it favors and how close to your actual rank it is. So even if you choose equipment that has better stats i.e. DEX, STR, it may not be worth it depending on how much it knocks off.

My gear's about 50-50 in terms of optimal rank VS higher rank gear than my own rank. I always make sure my weapon is within my rank and not above it. I've had no problems so far. Rank 17 on Conj but using a Rank 21 chest piece and my leves are as doable as while I was using a chest piece of my rank.
I've heard the same thing about them breaking up faster, and also not getting full stats from your gear. I never paid much attention to those myself while playing as I could do most of the usual things as comfortably as before @_@

pretty much all my gear is higher than my rank atm :/ just because it is either deal with the rank 1 or buy a 15 @ rank 10. i feel as if it is close enough... at least, i'll grow into it. better than getting that AWESOME level 40 item and not being able to equip that sexiness while you are perma 39 (bit of exageration)

they break faster and you don't get full stats

with weapons my experience has been less accuracy. Others dispute that - but using a dagger at level 1 on glad it was just miss, miss, miss - I never had the same problem with the weathered glad

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

You lose stated stats by equipping non-optimal gear for your class. Like Mickey said, the tests I've seen show about 1/3, so if you have an item that has 30 defense, you'll only be getting 20.

I haven't done or seen any tests as it pertains to your rank vs. optimal rank, but I imagine it's similar to FFXI's level sync'd gear. Basically, your rank 38 item will give you stats that are a little bit worse than the gear that is of proper rank. If you're min/maxing, then you'll want to wear gear as close to your optimal rank as possible, but if you're simply leveling or ranking up, then you'll find that gear that used to be optimal is getting beat out by your better level sync'd gear.

As for your question on using the rank 1 harpoon vs the rank 9; you'll level up fast so even if the rank 1 is better initially the rank 9 will very quickly become the better option. The only downside to the rank 9 will be the extra repairs.

Gear and Weapons that are above optimal level do indeed break faster; so the cost to use them is increased not only by the required repair material being more expensive, but also by the fact that it'll be losing durability faster.
