Are the new wards a viable alternative?Follow

I braved the wards for the first time since launch week last night. Prior to then, I pretty much just levelled any craft I needed to make items and didnt go above a certain level so as to avoid the need to buy anything.

My first experience with the wards was (like most people's) a disaster spending hours looking for anything that I could use.

Last night was different.

I went in looking for a Conj weapon around 17, a Thaum weapon around 12, and some armour for a glad.

20 minutes later, all three items were sourced (and a couple of extra bargains I picked up). Not only did I find what I wanted, but I actually really enjoyed the experience.

The main things that changed it for me compared with before were:

1) Ability to double click retainers to open bazaaar rather than using UI
2) MOre items of relevance to what you are looking for due to "renaming" wards.
3) more spread out retainers between wards

Being able to actually get through retainers really quickly with minimal lag meant that I could do a whole room in about 10 minutes. Add to that the excitement of finding a couple of bargains taht you just wouldnt have if there was an AH and I found myself for the first time since launch understanding what SE were trying to achieve with this.

The other thing I noticed is that the economy has come a long way over the last week or so and items are far more sensibly priced. I assume this is a by product of everyone running out of storage space on the characters and so actually trying to sell the things they dont need.

If you haven't been to the wards since the updates (as I hadnt), I strongly recommend you give it a try. I found everything I went in for and had fun doing it.

Its viable. The game could go on with this system for years.

Its still not good though. It still skews supply and demand and therefore price. It still takes more time than buying should. It still takes power away from the seller, who is limited in what actions he can take to improve his business relative to his competitors.

Glad you are having a better time. However on my server, Trabia, I still see people in Gridania who don't go to the correct wards or I still can't find things in the appropriate wards :/ Hopefully with the search function it will be better.

They seem to be getting better, just wish they weren't so time consuming. I also bought some stuff I wasn't looking for (got a great deal on it) while in search of the item I came for.

FFXIVYG has come through a few times for me.

I found it a lot less time consuming now with the changes, and the remaining time I did have to spend I enjoyed so I didnt mind too much.

Wards with Search function = Auction House.

I personally think that if the search function works well, there will be no need for an AH.

I like having the opportunity to stumble upon a good deal - but the bazaars in FFXI accomplished this just fine alongside an AH for items like consumables or crafting mats that you wanted to buy quickly and in bulk. People are still piling into the wrong wards for selling things, and unless SE offers everyone extra retainers for free I don't think this is going to change. I'd rather not pay SE extra money so that I can split up my goods among various retainers and place them in the right wards - to comply with their band-aid for a messy system.

I've mentioned this before in another thread - but I'd like to see the wards transformed into a place for players to gather and leave their Bazaars up. This would get a lot of the afk bazaars off the city streets and make the wards less crowded and easier to wander through. It would be even better if they raise the taxes on items sold in the wrong ward (off a player) and make the items sold in the correct ward tax free, giving an advantage over the taxed AH for people who want to sell high value items at a slight discount but still make a larger profit.

This way you'd have both experiences available, and the added bonus of being able to note the player's name in the wards to barter with them later (or immediately - if they are not AFK).
