Seeing a big boost in SP in your log is a nice little reward, but I don't watch my SP and EXP levels that much in FF14, which is a big change as to how I approached other MMO. It is now more about "What I want to do" and rank and level come at their own pace. But this is just how I feel about it of course.
For example I rotate on different classes: ARC, CON, FSH, BTN, CRP and WVR which keeps things interesting as I get to solo hunt things, gather things, create things in town and have access to lots of different leves. When I log on it is like "What do I want to do today" and I just go out and do that and have fun. It could be "I want to get a lvl on BTN because it is behind on my other classes", but that is a rare goal. Still, if it is the goal I set for myself, then the reward for getting there after the grind still feels really good, cause it is what I wanted to do.
Whenever the main quest can be progressed I am thrilled. Looking forward to the next pieces of the story line. Same goes for the class quests starting at 20, although they are not that epic it still is fun and a nice change of pace. I do wish there where more of these quests of course and I do not feel like grinding my main specifically for unlocking the next pieces of the story, so these alone don't keep the game fun atm.
I found my first post rank 20 grind party yesterday was also really fun. Not because of the grind for SP/EXP, but because of the experience in itself. Just having a good time and who cares I was getting 100sp a mob and the guy next to me 300sp. We were killing things together that I never killed before, got to meet new people and got to see a new area for the first time, where leves and gathering didnt take me before. I won't be doing these parties a lot, but when I do it is a nice change of activity.
The one thing I do put in effort for reward, is when I'm hunting for guild mark leves. It feels like a job, but every time I get to buy a skill from the guild it feels like a nice reward for all that work. Yeh, at this time it feels more rewarding then getting a new rank on any of my classes. Of course that may change post rank 30 or 40. Who knows.
So in short, I just do what I like to do with the content that is currently available and try not to force myself aside from getting out of my way for guild marks. Of course if I am really bored in the game, I take out my fishing pole and chat or watch TV, or log out and do something other then the game. I find it suprising given all the stuff we all dislike about the current state of FF14, I don't feel like logging out often for being bored with the game. So FF14 must be doing something right for me :D
