FFXI felt alive at all times, whether it was the community, the mobs/npcs, the zone you were in, it all felt like it had life. FFXIV, I log on, and everything just seems so bland and lifeless.

well unless you were in japan when ffxi was released and played out there you played ffxi atleast 17 months after the release with the zilart expansion that why it felt more lively. ffxiv only been out little over a month.

That's not true. Even before Zilart, the hometowns were lively and full of interesting NPCs with unique and often funny quests (Onion Brigade anyone?). Zones were plentiful and distinct (there was more than just THREE LOUSY ZONES FOR 40 LEVELS OF GAMEPLAY- WTF?). You fought something besides wildlife as early as level 5.

The game clearly had much more going for it when it was released than this game does.

But even if what you say is true, it's hardly a commendation for this game. Why should anyone wait a year for a game to be decently fun? SE should've learned from it's mistakes and not made them again, only worse this time.

No excuses. This game is a total bomb, probably the most disappointing and vacant MMORPG in history barring ftp games.

First of all, I am a strong supporter of FFXIV. I will continue to play FFXIV regardless of how it turns out gradually...

However, I miss the 'feel' I had when I was playing FFXI. I had always said this to my friends in the past when they questioned my "FFXI addiction"...

"FFXI is not a game....it's real life to me...just that it's virtual. It's the virtual extension of my real life".

However, I can't even say the experience in FFXIV has been even remotely close. Sigh...hopefully things will change soon.

FFXI

Because fighting goblins, crabs, flies, and 1 or 2 other things all the way to level cap is the cool thing to do. Are you still awake? Souless? How about just poke a stick in me, I'm done.

FFXIV

We changed a few things, but you are still stuck with fighting the same kind of mobs over and over.

All of the creativity goes into the cgi, and they fall grossly short on both games for what the player encounters. "Ahh that looked really cool." 3 years later, "Why have I not encountered that in game yet?" The cgi made it look like I could "insert word".

Rank 18-23 conjurer. Yep, for the most part all I did was heal and fight crabs. Maybe this is lost in translation. Perhaps killing 300 crabs in one day is a major achievement in real life. Thanks for again making the player kill the same thing over and over. Have you ever eaten the same microwavable dinner for 4 weeks straight? Try it and see how your pallet suffers.

I just signed up after reading this thread. I agree with most of the folks here that FFXIV seems to be missing that certain "soul" in it compared to FFXI. I'm not really good with words to express or describe that "feeling" I had when I was playing FFXI back in the day so I searched up a video that could visually demonstrate what I felt when playing FFXI. So full screen those videos, sit back, and relax. This is the "soul/life" I wanted you folks to see.

Thats the game i want to play right there lol, think i'll be reactivating my account today.

All the little things made ffxi feel alive, on the 1st vid in all the 8 years i've played don't think i've ever seen grass hoppers in konstitchat, and a few other bits and bobs like Ifrits cauldren errupt while i was in there, i knew it happened but never experienced it myself, things like that makes everyones experience unique.

tbh the graphics still look beautiful in ffxi, not ffxiv standard, but they still look good.

my most memorable quest in ffxi was the sapling one (the one about the plantiods) trying to get to sky, was so sad, (lol feeling sad for a mob) but the little cutscenes and story was great, it kept you wanting more to see the poor guy reach his goal, even if the reward was only to have the mandies in the past cast regen on you if you had the title from the quest still up, but the quests alone was a reward. thats what this game needs, memorable quests...well just quests in general

Incredible. Seeing those videos just reminded me of how beautiful FFXI was (is).
Nostalgia? Perhaps. I quit years ago, so my memory may be a little blurry.
"Memory paints with golden ink" is a proverb where I live.
Can it really be that just about everything in 11 was more "right" than in 14?

Yes. I was expecting for the same thought to go into FFXIV and so far I feel I have been let down. I might start up FF11 again if the "big" update in November does not add soul to this game.

I agree...watching those videos makes me want to dust off the ol FFXI and jump back in. But...the more I think about it...the memories I have from watching those videos span over a 3-4 YEAR period. A lot of work went into getting those memories. Rome wasn't built in a day. Who knows...8 years from now when I look at a similar video on FFXIV and I may be saying to myself...remember when the game was released and everyone was freaking out...and look how it turned out once the developers were able to grasp what they were trying to accomplish and players started to respond with positive comments instead of negative.

Who knows..just saying...maybe we are at the very very tip of the iceberg regarding where FFIV can take us.

or not...

but it really is way too soon to know.

It seems to me you are comparing apples to oranges. FFXI is a game that has been out for almost 10 years, and has been tweaked, re-tweaked, tweaked back, then tweaked a couple more thousand times.

A Better comparison would be between FFXI in its first month (Lvl 50 cap, Rank 5 mission cap, not even a Shadow Lord to go and Kill) and FFXIV the way it is now. I'll take FFXIV hands down.

Comparing a release title to one that has been out for 10 years and has been polished more time than can be counted is a little negative, no?

This game is awesome, I freakin love it. You are seriously gonna sit there and say there isnt enough for you to do?

I've had my hands full since release and i barely have a rank at 15. Between crafting, lvln my PUG, and getting all the skills I want from other classes for my PUG I have been quite busy, and loving every minute of it. This game is absolutely beatiful, Gridania is all the best parts of Zi'Tah and Ronafure rolled into one. Throw a 15 miner in there, and Leves AND I HAVENT EVEN GOT IN A PARTY YET. And I cant friggin wait to, either. People will be dazzled by my PUG throwing down sick damage with MAR weaponskills. Awesome.

The freedom this game offers in comparison to FFXI is like crack cocaine to me.

If you cant get excited for this game because you think 11 is more alive, you got problems my friend.

Its like my buddy, he calls me up, cursing 11 saying how boring it is, and there is nothing left, and the graphics suck, etc. AND not 10 minutes later, he is telling me "You should get back in man, finish the promies" and sh*t.

this is the exact same thing I was thinking about.

I still remember starting FFXI. the into movie was epic, and the towns were all really cool. the fact that they were an actual country instead of just a city also made you feel a nation's pride. from day 1 I was a proud sandorian and felt a sense of home. you had your own house there you lived there. you were part of the kingdom a civilian. in FFXIV you come in as a foreigner you dont feel like you belong. also every city seems to be multi race. you dont feel any ties to any homeland or racial pride either.

then the cities themself were way better designed. more Open and alive and the starting zones were awesome. I still remember the first time i stepped outside in west ronfaure and the ******* awesome ronfaure theme started playing. and 5 minutes in i got attacked and killed by an orc. already giving you a beastman force to hate and fight against. you felt a sense of purpose. the missions and storyline was fken awesome the zones were smaller but more diverse and better designed NOT ******* COPY PASTED A MILLION TIMES IN ONE BORING *** HUGE ZONE OF THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER. you had the city then the orc part. the outpost the little lake in the south etc. the zone was awesome. the zones were very open not small little paths the entire time and no copy pasted ****.

maybe im just being nostalgic but FFXIV just seems so ******* lazy and lifeless to me. nothing like FFXI was.

7/10.

I was convinced for a few min, but then I saw the low post count and the subtle telltale signs.

Nice try though.

I agree with little bits and pieces of other peoples posts here.

Right now, XIV is like XI when released - base with a little content. People dont need to "hope" more content is coming.. it's guaranteed. SE isn't going to half-*** a game and give up, I know expansion packs with new areas to explore, new quests to do, and cool looking NMs are coming around the corner - we're still at the begining.

I didn't play FFXI at JP release (cause i'm NA) but started at NA release.
A lot of people here are comparing XIV to XI after 8+ years of content. I don't think that's very fair.. XI started off pretty basic too.

The huge thing to me was mentioned already - being able to equip any item as any job (sucks). That was the coolest thing in XI.. getting to the next level so you can equip that next item that's been sitting in your inventory for a week. (scorpion harness anyone? :) )

Right now, there isn't anything worth grinding for to attain that 'next thing'. Crafting I guess, to make the next cool armour.. but for leveling, there's no "point" right now - but it's coming..
