Quote from SE: We dont want to compete with world of warcraft.

Well then dont release a MMO your automatically competing weather you thnk you are or not.... do Japanese really thnk this differently from English that this doesnt compute to them? You release a MMO you are auromatically competing with everyone else period. Dont want to compete dont release a MMO.

If you do release a MMO expect to compete heavily as the people who play MMO are already playing another MMO and you will instantly have to compete with that MMO as players try your game.

One time sales are not enough to sustain a game so you thus have to COMPETE and very strongly to keep renewable revenue streaming.

Weird...

insta-sub-default haha love it

WoW appeal to different types of MMO players than FFXIV, perhaps this does not compute to you sir? :P
MMO is more than just button bashing with other players theres sub genres and different communities and fans

Whether not weather (we're not talking about clouds and rainstorms here)

If you're going to bash my game of choice you could at least spell stuff right.

sorry I had to do an edit: Seriously weather for whether LOL, is that fourth grade spelling or was that just in my time. Could be sophomore English nowadays I don't know.

I am a gamer. I love FFXIV. If it were not around, I would not be playing mmo's right now. I enjoyed FFXI but was done with it 3 years ago, and don't feel inclined to go back. I do however have a lot of fun in FFXIV and plan on staying around for some time to come.

I gave WoW a try early this year, when some friends talked me into playing. I didn't like it. I found myself thinking how much I wished it was more like FFXI the entire time I played, and eventually quit after 2-3 months. I do not feel at all inclined to play it again, new expansion pack or not.

Now then, I'd say I'm a pretty good example of who SE is targeting. A niche gamer who doesn't even consider WoW as an option in terms of mmo's, and is dissatisfied with the other mmo's on the market. I have a ls with 60+ active players who feel the same way, and we all enjoy FFXIV a great deal. With so much to look forward to in the coming months, there is no doubt we will continue enjoying it.

WoW just doesn't suit everyone, and to compete with them for their audience would mean to cater to what their audience likes, i.e. another WoW clone, of which there are dozens already. FFXIV is an mmo for players who want something else entirely. That's what SE meant when they said they aren't trying to compete with WoW.

Yes both games are mmo's, but that doesn't mean they automatically share audiences. Both checkers and chess are boardgames, yet they don't always share players. Both poker and uno are card games, yet they don't always share players. Halo and CoD and counterstrike are all fps games, and again, they don't always share playerbases. Some just want to play their game of choice, and if it vanished, they would leave the genre rather than play the alternatives. Some people like cats, some like dogs, some like parrots that screech loudly and crap on the floor, or fanged tarantulas. Just because they are all pets doesn't mean the owner of one would automatically want the other ones too.

So OP, I would say that if you can't understand how others might have a different opinion than you, I don't think you should go on the internet and talk to others. You're free to go play WoW if you enjoy it, and think it's a better game. I personally don't enjoy it, and think FFXIV is the better game, and I will continue playing it. To each their own, simple enough right?

EDIT: As for the source, I don't have it offhand, but I do recall reading it in an official statement released by SE, back during the beta I think. So yes, they did indeed say that they aren't trying to compete with WoW, nor target the WoW audience.

I agree with you totally. Comparing WoW vs FFXI/FFXIV is like comparing Dead Space and Halo. They are two totally different games, just as much as F1 vs Gran Tourismo. Same game type but not aimed at the same audience. FFXI/XIV will always be aimed at those willing to go the extra mile, work harder and work things out and things can still go pear shaped even when you expect it not to. FFXIV is not WoW and never will be.

Maybe their viewpoint changed during alpha/beta (I personally don't remember anything related to WoW even being posted on the beta forums from the developers) but Wada seemed pretty confident that they would do decently when matched against WoW last December:

In any case, I doubt the numbers they're seeing during their free month(s) was what they were aiming for.

It's kind of expected that a Japanese company would say that they don't want to compete.

People from the English-speaking world come from the most individualist, competitive countries the world has to offer. Conversely, in collectivist nations like Japan, the emphasis is on cooperation and doing YOUR best (not necessarily doing THE best). In collectivist cultures, comparing yourself to others is frowned upon-- everyone is on the same team, and you should be happy for the successes of others. These are just trends and not all-encompassing laws, mind you, but it's rare to get a public statement like, "We're going to crush the competition!" from Japan. That kind of outspoken confidence is seen as foolish.

While I agree that XIV should have waited to release, this simply shows a fundamental lack of understanding of different cultures. Nevermind that competition isn't the holy grail of development that it's romanticized as in the US. Individually people tend to perform better when they adopt a mentality of doing their best rather than competing with others, in fact.

Though in the case of FFXIV... It's one thing to not compete with other games, but it's a mistake not to at least learn from them. Nothing wrong with taking notes.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Badly written, terrible grammar, foolish character name. I can't say I'll be sorry to see you go. >_>
