What weapon level is the optimal rank?Follow

I've been using weapons that are within my rank, currently I'm a marauder 22 and I have a lvl 20 spiked bronze labris and a lvl 21 storm axe; my acc's being crap though. My LS mates tell me to wear a weapon within 5 levels ABOVE my own rank.

I had read here this was a really bad choice.

So I'm confused. Should I equip with gear above my rank?

I thought if anything should be within your rank, it's your weapon - as it gimps you too much (maybe not for solo exp-grind). If there's other theories or facts, I'd love to hear them. Maybe ask your LS mates why they think that way(?)

No.

With regards to weapons, there's a penalty applied to the weapons stats when you are under the optimal level. I'm not sure if that penalty is a fixed penalty for being under-leveled or if it's scaled (i.e. penalty is harsher depending upon how under-leveled you are). The most noticeable aspect of the penalty will be to you accuracy and how fast the weapon degrades. Same goes for gear...

Of course if you hate SP and have extra gil to burn on repairs, or if looking cool is that important to you, by all means!

Gear, even 2 levels above your current rank may penalize you too. I have a Sheepskin Harness +1 that I've had since early days (gift from a buddy) that if I swap for a Sheepskin Jerkin (17) at MRD rank 15 I LOSE defense and evasion. So, it's best to just wait until you're even par with the optimal level of the gear before upgrading.

I was using maple bow rank 8. At ARC13 I got my hands on a Plumed Willow Bow rank 21. I swapped out and found I was missing much more and fights just became so much harder. So I switch back and only switched to new bow at ARC21 and all is great.

Now I didn't check, but I can guess if I had switched to the new bow at ARC19 (for example) it wouldn't have been nerfed as much and maybe it would have performed better then using my old rank 8 bow at ARC19. So I guess it is kinda hard (and untested still) to say what is better for any given situation.

I'd say just try and see if you can spot a positive change when you swap out to new gear and otherwise stick with your old stuff till you reach the optimal rank.

MRD miss a lot, regardless. This is a common issue.

I believe I got the exact same Bow, I have recently become R18. If you check the stats your supposed to be getting compared to the stats you are getting you will notice the bow is still better then a Maple.

I have had a maple for some time now since I could hold it and the bow I have now is about 3 Ranks above and I am getting better stats better acc/atk then my maple. Main reason why I have this bow though is because I do not see many often ;)

BUT if some one tells you NOT to wear something above you I think you find the penalty is not as bad as some make out. They apparently get damaged quicker though that is one important factor.

I believe the stats of the bow i got now are in the 60's and I am getting 50's stats where as i had 40's before with the maple. I cant remember the specifics but I compared them both and the higher Rank Weap was better even though I was holding it as a R17 4 R's below.

You can wear gear above your level as long as you double check to make sure it actually helps you. If you dont get any stat gain after changing from your lower gear to a higher one, the only things you'll change is your appearance and your cost for repairs. If it helps you and you think it's worth it, then by all means go ahead. I equipped my plummed maple shortbow at R15 ARC and it had the exact same attack and damage, but it increased my accuracy considerably. I used it 6 ranks below optimal since it was pretty easy to notice a big difference in times missed.

tl;dr: Equip a weapon, check your stats. Equip another weapon, check your stats. Pick better stats.

Weapons that are above your current rank slowly scale up to their full stats, so at times they can be better than a weapon that has an optimal rank below your rank, so the only real way right now to see what is better for you is write down your stats and switch between weapons to see which is better.

Example:

For Weaving, I used a Bronze Needle (optimal rank 7) until about 13-14, where the Iron Needle (optimal rank 22) began giving better appropriate stats.

Now I'm rank 26 using the Iron Needle(R22) that puts my craft stats at 40/38/33 and I have a Silver Needle(R32) that puts my stats at 39/37/33, so it currently is a worse option. However, once I hit 27-28, the Silver Needle will scale up a little closer to its listed stats, so it will likely become the optimal tool.
