Just in case anyone who uses an Nvidia card isn't aware yet (I haven't seen any related topics) - Nvidia have released some updated drivers for some cards dated last week.

http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk (UK version)

The patch notes include the following:

•Increases performance vs. v260.89 drivers in the following PC games: Civilization V (SLI), Fallout 3, Final Fantasy XIV and F1 2010 (DX11).

Prior to today I was having to reboot my system every hour or so as the game would start slowing down until it was unplayable - today I anaged to play it for over 6 hrs without any performance issues whatsoever. I even managed to increase the game resolution a few notches without affecting overall performance.

My friend assumed his driver would be up to date as he was on Windows 7, but he had to manually download it from the site. I'm on XP. Although he noticed an improvement on his card, which is higher spec than mine, the improvement on my 9800 GT was jaw dropping.

To many of you this is either old news or irrelevant but maybe will help other people who either assume their drivers download automatically or just werent aware of the update. The version date should be 25/10/2010 - or thereabouts as I'm not writing this on that pc.

I don't have XI installed on this build so wouldn't be able to say. Is that something you experienced or do you think SE paid Nvidia to sabotage XI? XD

Being that I play both, I did not mean anything by that. Just that XI after the new driver update started to take the slow lane in load times, movement AND UI.

SE's doing a fine job of sabotaging XI on their own.

If you have one of the older nvidia cards this patch shouldn't have very much of an effect on FFXI. Part of this update was supposed to address the lack of support for older games(such as FFXI) on the newer GTX cards. I can attest to that. I have a Geforce GTX 460m and FFXIV runs pretty great without the 260.99 driver update. FFXI on the other hand ran better on my 8 year old geforce 4000 series than compared to these newer GTX's. I heard someone comparing it to trying to win a sailboat race in a spaceship. Good analogy if you've experienced FFXI on these newer cards.

Here's a link to massive thread on the nvidia forums addressing this same topic. Perhaps even the reason for this patch.
