Recently I made a new character for some variety and wanted to try my hand at fishing and only fishing. I want it to become my main source of income and was wondering what everyone's take on that is. The only thing that worries me a bit is repairing, having no high level experience myself how high do regular NPC costs go? the fact that it's only to 75% is also a bit sad.

No linkshell atm either, typing this out is actually making me rethink the whole thing ha ha.

well as long as you're on the same server as your main character you can put your items that need repaired in your retainer's bazaar for 1 gil offering, and then log to your main and have them repair it for you. That's how I repair my hubby's items when he needs soemthing repaired that takes a craft I leveled and he didnt.

The repair price depends on the following:

* Optimal rank of the equipment
[e.g A Sheepskin Subligar will be cheaper to repair than a Dodoskin Subligar)
* Amount of durability of the equipment to be repaired up to 75%
* +1/2/3 Items (Higher Quality items are more expensive)
* Difficulty of crafting by class
[That is to say, the higher the rank of the repair item, the higher the cost)

I wouldn't level fishing for the income. Do it because you enjoy it or because you want access to things only fishers can get for your crafting. As far as selling fish goes, you can earn some gil but it won't be a lot relative to other professions.

Teaching yourself to fish won't stop you from starving in FF14.The food wards barely have 4 people in them. Roaming mobs treat you like bait , adding to your repair cost. This is the only game I think a fisherman can come home at the end of the day and say he needs a real crafting job. NPC repairs stop being fun after Lev 13 4,8 and 12k a piece adds up.

i think DOL class would pay off the most @ rank50.. who know what this high lvl fish would give us , bones , pearls , gold etc etc

also i recommend picking up cooking but just for gutting.. im rank14 fishing , rank15 cooking , 14 goldsmith just off gutting fishs and turning sand into fine sand

off topic; wouldnt it be cool if fisher can fish up "broken" epic armor @ rank50 , then we can sell to other crafters so they can repair

Fishing rods are repaired by Lumber and Branches. Branches are worthless and are usually vendor trash, and lumber is SP food for Carpenters and are common.

By spending 15k on a repair to 75%, you can easily just ask a carpenter to repair it to 100% for a fifth of the cost.

You actually start to make ok money on leves when you can do the 10+ ones, and if you make sure to wait to teleport till someone shouts offering money - you would do okay. Your best money is going to come from alchemists. Spearfishing will net you the best items for cash imo. Try to get items needed to fix your equipment and offer crafters money to do 100% fix. Your gear actually won't degrade super fast.

Dart frogs = 28+ alchemy item used to make debuff/medicine pots (spearfishing)
brass loach = gelatin ingredient (but not worth a lot, probably not worth keeping)
malm kelp = decent alchemist grind item for 13-17 (with sea sand)
all fish glue ingredients will probably sell pretty well.
Scorpions = 22+ alchemy item used to make debuff/medicine pots (spearfishing)
helmet crab = 20+ alchemy used to make ironhide ungent - pot that gives a protect buff (spearfishing)
tarantula = 20+ alchemy poison pots/remedies (spearfishing)
blindfish = 20+ alchemy - blind pots/remedies (rod fishing in cassie hollow)

I suggest if you get this stuff that you afk bazaar in the alchy guild. Selling shards should also net you decent money - just set all your elements into earth or wind.
