Okay, first off I want to say that I have been a fan of Squaresoft (and SE) since my childhood. I have loved their games up until around FFXII released. Since then, I have found it a bit difficult to play with the aplomb I did when I was younger. It may just be age catching up with me though, as I am finding it difficult to play any game quite as often as I did when younger. Gone are the days of being able to wait 4 hours just to kill a giant scorpion, as are the days of racing my chocobo while humming "Mambo de Chocobo" to myself.
Now that that has been said, FFXIV had a very similar effect on me. For months upon months I was so excited for it, and even upon release I was playing it nonstop for hours at a time (the !!! part). Then suddenly, I felt as if the wind had gone out of my proverbial sails. Between the lack of things to do, thinly veiled grind, and general lack social interaction within the game, I am currently feeling somewhat empty (the ... part).
I know its not 100% the game itself, it is partly me evolving as a human being, but I really find it difficult to stare at a screen where no one even replies to [Looking for Members] [Guildleve] or "Does anyone feel like doing some leves?" The game was quite lively until recently as well, it really seems as if I am not the only one who has the same feelings; just one of the few who is verbal about it in a civil manner.
To sum up my post in 1 paragraph: MMOs are boring without constant social interaction of some sort. This interaction can be any sort of thing, good or bad, kind or mean, painful or enjoyable. Without social interaction, namely talking of some sort, a MMORPG becomes less of a "world" and more of a "game." It I simply want a "game" I have an entire shelf of them waiting to interact with me more than the people in Eorzea, players and non-players alike.
So please, whenever you play the game, be social, it will make the game more of a world and less of a grind.
