After then controller auto shuts off, I turn it back on to find that the game won't recognize it. I have to shut the whole game down and restart in order to make it work. Is there any way to not have to shut down.. perhaps the controller has changed frequencies and i can change it back through something like device manager or messing with IRQ's in some way? Im running windows 7. I've writen to SE perhaps they'll patch it in the coming weeks

if you step away for too long your controller will go to sleep... the only way to guarantee it's still connected after a while is to plug it in to the usb slot... the same way you'd charge it while playing on the 360.

but other games i play you can turn the controller back on and the game recognizes its been turned back on and you can start playing right away, NOT requiring a reset of the game.

Having the same issue here. Wish there was at least a way to keep it from idling for longer. I've even had it randomly shut off while not idling and have been unable to reconnect without exiting the game entirely.

I use the PS3 controller with motionjoy. Don't have to worry about micro-craps then:)

If you use the wireless xbox controller and it turns of well thats it, its off. You will need to restart the game to get it to work together again. Its much better to uae the Hard wired xbox controller. You will never have these issues.

I use a wireless 360 controller and noticed this too, it seems to be something to do with the coding of the game. Other games I have played with this controller do not have the same issue while FFXIV has the same behavior with other things too. Fraps for instance. If I don't have fraps running before starting up the game I must completely exit and restart in order to make it display FPS.

Does anyone have any insight as to why the game works this way?

As a note, I've gotten into the habit of plugging my 360 controller into the charge cord if I expect to be using the keyboard only for a decent amount of time.

I am having this issue as well. Love my wireless controller. I also have a wired one but always using a wired controller damaged the usb ports on my old pc. Tho it took a few years. Thats why I went wireless for my new pc. I have spent a lot of good money to go wire free and Im sure the technology exists to fix or work around this annoying little problem.

There is a way to work around the wireless 360 controller turning off by using the Plug'n'charge kit.

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Play-Charge-Kit/dp/B000B6MLS2

When you AFK, you have to plug in the charging cord and it will not turn off.

Also, don't forget to set the Calibration to 3 in FFXIVconfig. This will help you avoid your character running off because of over-sensitive joysticks.

Nice info on the workaround.

The behaviour is different in FFXI, if the controller turns off, it is recognised again when turned back on.
This is the same in prettymuch any game that supports it.
For ONE iteration of the beta it worked the correct way, my conclusion is that it is broken and it should be fixable.

I have said this before, the game is not compelling enough for me to spend money on workarounds for bugs, and whilst this is broken, I will not play, I need to take breaks for all sorts of reasons and if I have to log off and back on when I do, then I won't bother at all.

To me, this IS a game breaker.

I don't think this game really supports the xbox 360 controller, does it? I know with most games, I just plug the controller in and it recognizes it, but with this game I had to map all the keys myself. I use the xbox 360 controller for windows (it has a really long cord) and it works fine. Much less hassle than the wireless controller going to sleep all the time.

Sadly I dont have a charge and play cable. And the idea was to stay away from cables that needed to be plugged into my ports all the time. I sent SE a email addressing this issue and got this in response (below). Seems like they want to act as tho its not their problem. I did send a detailed but polite follow up reply.

One thing I do is alt-tab out of the game if im going to be away for more than 10 min. If you are alt tabbed out, the controller goes off, just turn it back on BEFORE you tab back in. It will still work.

hmmm. Ill give that a try. I play in full screen tho. I think that crashs the game. Or maybe thats when I hit the window key.

Edit: if you play the game in fullscreen alt+tab crash's the game.

I really wish I knew this a few months ago. I used a wireless 360 pad and had the same issues as everyone else here. I ended up getting a wired PC pad instead since it was less of a hassle. Some reason amazon had it for $15 for a day then the price shot back up to $32. I got lucky and got it for only $15.

It works great with FFXIV and any other PC games I've thrown at it.
