I set out to test the effects of STR on shield block damage mitigation.
And made a very disturbing discovery.

As a Rank 27 THM with 40 STR, the damage I revceived was as follows (all trials
when I was casting/moving/facing a different direction and special attacks
eliminated; all trials were conducted on a single green Muntaui Squirrel.):

Without shield/not blocking:
56,57,69,56,47,49,50,51,49,51,57,54,52,48,49,47,56

With shield/successful block:
98,67,36,98,70,37,68,94,50,93,74,123,36,94,58,95,92,29,65,126,21,122,52,90,96

Preliminary conclusion: Whatever the cause, successful shield blocks did definitely
*NOT* consistently reduce the damage I received. As the variance in the first sample
is close to 0, even with the increased variance in sample 2, these results are quite
disturbing.

Shield used: Ash Ekyu (? don't know the English name, sorry), rank 15, neither in red
nor yellow repair status.

From the results of your testing, it looks like blocking is useless, but that's not entirely true. Phalanx does a fantastic job of doing damage and holding hate, and can't be used without a successful block so blocking is still a necessity for GLA's.

Yes, definitely. And there's allways the possibility that some
STRANGE UNKNOWN variable affected results. Like, wooden shields
being "fire" elemental, the squirrel earth, and the day thursday,
which miraculously inverted results.
After all, this is Square Enix ^.-/

The other question is what effect do different stats have on shield skill? How might your test results have been negatively affected by the fact that you used a thm instead of a gla? I can't imagine you've got a ton of DEX on your THM.

Not a ton, no. But a "decent" 40. Especially for the test (that was my original intention, as I stated before).
Randomness is a cool thing, but when things *seem* to do the opposite of what they should do, something smells fishy.

anyway, I find your results pretty intruiging. I'm interested to take a look at the difference with my char to see if I come up with the same results.

Please do so, yes. It's a very quick test, didn't take longer than about 10 minutes.
I sincerely hope you prove me wrong.
