Do mobs have to be a certain level of difficulty to drop shards?
If not do they drop more if they're higher?
Thanks

The max so far that I have seen is 6 shards of one type and Rank of the Mob does not seem to affect that.

Mobs are assigned a specific element and they can drop 6 of that type of shard, along with three of two other elements. They can drop each of those three elements as a crystal. It doesn't matter how low level they are, they can still drop the shards.

I use this page to determine what element mobs I should kill: http://ffxiv.zam.com/wiki/Mob_Elements

But the level difference between your class and mob level still makes a difference. I noticed this when I went for some thistletale marmots near camp drybone. I wanted to get some fire shards and tried it with my pug 25 at that time. They died really fast but after 10-12 mobs I got no shards at all. I switched to my mrd 17 and immediatedly got shards every other mob.

It seems to be similar to FFXI where you get noticably less drops once your level is a lot higher.

People keep saying this, but I'm not seeing this as the case.

I always get shards for instance, grinding SP on low ranked classes in the lowbie parts of Thanalan. However, when I kill these sort of mobs on my 24 Marauder, I never get shards. I've been killing them randomly when I felt like it to make sure, and even just now I went and killed about thirty Bumble Beetles / Star Marmots. Not one dropped a shard or a crystal.

What I'm saying here is not proof, but I'd invite people to test this further. I tentatively believe there is a point where you're too high above the mob to get shards/crystals (or at the very least, the drop rate becomes insanely low), and that people are only stating otherwise because they aren't high enough yet to experiance this.

Edit - Forgot to include that my physical level is 42.

I should also add that this makes sense, as it did in XI, as you don't want a bunch of highly ranked players 1-shotting all the easy mobs that should be going to the players on low ranked classes.

I believe the mob has to give you physical experience to drop shards, I have never seen shards drop on anything that didn't give me any physical experience and after several hours of one shotting marmots for moko grass the other day I think it's pretty safe to say that it is a fact.

Not true. Mobs don't give me physical xp. (Physical level 46 courtesy of DoH classes; highest combat class is rank 18). There seems to be a 10 rank spread. If you're ~10 ranks higher than the mobs you're killing, they won't drop shards.

Yeah, I don't get physical exp when skilling up low ranked DoW jobs because of my physical level... but I still get shards. It has to be based off of ranks.

Is there a catalogue of mobs anywhere by rank?

Ah, so then there's no magical critter that drops wind and earth. :(
