Most F2P games have an option to subscribe, giving you access to everything for the normal 10-15 dollars per month.

No, MOST F2P games are those Chinese and Korean made grind mmos. They have no subscriptions. Clients are free, logging in is free, and if you don't want to grind for the next millennium, you buy xp potions and other crap from the cash shop.

Considering the current content state of FFXIV, it matches the typical "asian grinder" model rather well. And especially since they have their Chinese launch soon, going with the standard F2P Chinese/Korean model makes sense.

You are thinking in terms of the few F2P games here in NA. If SE is truly thinking of going F2P, they're going to do it the way that brings the most people and the most cash from MT in the most territories friendly to that model. That's the Chinese and Korean market, not the NA/EU.

We in the NA/EU will constantly want more "content", while the Chinese and Korean gamers are happy if you just throw some more monsters in once in a while for them to bash on.

Plus, I can easily see them having no problem pulling out of the NA/EU market since we crapped all over their new baby. lol They've been "dishonored" here.

Ya when I say most MMO, I am really only considering about a dozen, maybe 2 dozen to even exist, not counting the 10,000 asian mmo's out there. But you are right, if it were to go f2p it would be that route.

All that said, this is just a rumor, it wont happen. If it did it wouldn't be for atleast a year from now.

The issue isn't whether or not f2p can work, the issue is that the monthly subscription fee isn't even on the radar of things currently wrong with this game.

Magically getting rid of that isn't going to fix the outstanding issues.

Well, I kinda meant a "properly translated" link, since you said mmosite didn't translate it correctly.

There won't be any magic happening any time soon. Wada just admitted PC players are going to be paying to beta test the PS3 version.

F2P will be the true death of FFXIV. F2P means more bots, more cheats, less updates, less support, and a cash shop (credit card fraud). In my opinion, the majority of their subscribers are Japanese players. Do they really think Japanese players will tolerate that? It might be stereotype, but they seem to be the most hardcore gamers in the world, right up there with Koreans.

F2P would be the final nail in the coffin for me. I'd just stop caring completely. What a disgrace to even consider it.

Don't mind the NSFW ads.

I had a couple of friends who are taking Japanese in college double check the basic accuracy of the article.

Keep in mind that Sankaku likes to troll about FFXIV, but they haven't fabricated anything relating to the article.

I only know of one of these and it just went that way from subscription service. All the others I have played work exactly like I said.

My bad. It's not actually stated in the Sankuku article.

My main point was that it's not nearly as definitive as the mmosite article makes it out to be. mmosite claims that SE will be implementing micro transactions into FFXIV.

The actual business meeting stated that they may introduce more micro transactions (a 10% increase) to increase revenue. No mention of FFXIV in particular regarding this bit.
Even if an implication was made, you cannot definitively say that SE will be making FFXIV free to play like the mmosite states.

True enough, noone can say they're doing it definitely. But Final Fantasy is a "Dragon Quest type" game as Wada puts it ( this shows how far removed from games Wada is, he doesn't even know the term "rpg").

Looking at the original Japanese articles that covered the conference, the F2P thing was mentioned independent of the discussion on FFXIV. The idea of F2P as a business model in and of itself was posed to Wada, and he felt that it was best suited for places like Facebook, where a game can spread virally and pick up tons of users. In that case, a pay wall is a hindrance and being F2P lets the game grow quickly with the expectation that it will pick up profits from charging for items after the fact.

imo they would be better takeing something like tatics and makeing a F2P version of that with some ok graphics but nothing fancy. haveing you pick a side etc and haveing a pvp mode.

i feel something like that would get them some desent numbers with little to no effert on there part.

heck even tetra master when it got tossed in with xi was great and was $1 a month.

Regardless of whether or not FFXIV goes in the direction of F2P; I don't think people should be really upset about it and feel ripped off. What is the first thing that people think of when F2P is brought up? That's right. They think about all of those sh*tty, grinding Korean MMOs. Now obviously you people are jumping to conclusions from hearsay and not doing your proper research.

I'm not going to bring up all those sh*tty Korean MMOs. You know what they are. The most successful F2P games, people mentioned DDO and Lord of the Rings Online; and others, are only successful because they are ran by the same company that developed them from the ground up. Most F2P games are ran by another company that basically handles micro transactions/hosting. This is why Turbine and Zynga are very successful. They developed the game and they handle all aspects of business when it comes to the game's micro transactions, new content and customer/technical support.

It's when you outsource your product that people turn away from it. Same thing happens when IBM, Microsoft, Dell, etc have you talking to operators in a third world country because it's cheaper. I have and will always avoid as many purchases that I can from a company that outsources. Will do so for the rest of my life. Outsourcing is stupid. It would ruin FFXIV F2P. Look what happened to Fantasy Zero. Failure, though, it would have failed anyways lol.

I think F2P could work if Square Enix runs the entire operation like Turbine and Zynga does. Only way to go. Any other way is suicide. Regardless, it took one full year to release the US version of Final Fantasy XI after the Japanese version had already been out. They had all that time to fix the game and cater to its players. We didn't get to experience the sh*tty Final Fantasy XI experience. I'm sure some people here did if they imported it.

Personally, I'm giving them one full year. I know they rushed it, they know they rushed it and you know they rushed it. But alot of us wanted to play the game regardless of the state it was in. I think everyone is at fault personally. Give them time to fix it. Final Fantasy XI turned out amazing after the years of updates, expansions and content. Final Fantasy XIV can only improve from this point on.

Yeah, in WoW all you do is pay your subscription... that is, until they started making exclusive pets available for real money... and then that mount for real money... and then that (coming soon!)...
