Doesn't getting your CC company to reverse the charges only hurt the retailer that you bought it from?

Yes, if you go through your CC company to reverse the charges, the retailer gets dinged a chargeback fee. It's kind of like an NSF fee on your bank account even though the retailer didn't do anything wrong. Chargebacks are intended to protect the consumer against fraud, not to provide the consumer with a means to work around legitimate retailer returns policies. And software has always been a, "Seal is broken? Tough." type of policy, especially for MMOs where the value in the box is the one-time-use registration key that allows you to set up an account.

per another thread which i could not link f2p rumors are going around retailers are dropping prices on ce and se standard editon and now thats in the first day. Will we get a refund or some sort of in game gil compensation for buying XIV considering its only been 2-3months since we bought it? Man this upsets me 80dollars down the tube

You can get a refund if you bought it with your Credit Card. Dispute it to your CC company and tell them that you paid for a service and the service was not delivered. End of story. SE won't like it very much, but they brought it upon themselves.

Not only is this fraud as others have mentioned, if you actually used a bank debit card to do this and not a real credit card and try to dispute it, you are wasting your time and the time of the bank employees who could have been working on an actual, legitimate dispute.

You would be EXTREMELY surprised how many people think a debit card is a credit card.

Thought this deserved to be made into a poem...

I got my shoes, I got my hat,
I dropped my sub, and that was that.
There's nothing more that you'll get,
but a lesson learned to not buy shet.

But obviously SE is about the last company that would ever go in this direction so I think we can call this rumor safely false.

Same, I just don't like that.

My recommendation if you still have the buddy code is to sell the game secondhand with that code, which is effectively a separate account registration code.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

Why oh why would you get a refund? You bought a game and you didn't like it. That's like going to the movies and after watching it, going back to the ticket office to get a refund because you didn't enjoy the film.

Actually, I saw that happen once. Some gentleman with his (something around) eight year old daughter bought tickets to Princess Mononoke just ahead of me and a girlfriend. The clerk pointed out that right on the poster it said "Mature Rating" and asked again if he really wanted to go in with his child. He said something quietly, the clerk sold them the two tickets.

I was curious and so was Angel, so we trailed them into the theatre and sat a couple of rows back. Sure enough, in the beginning scenes when it hits Mature Rating inside of ten minutes, the little kid was freaked out and crying and daddy had to carry her out.

I checked with the clerk on the way out and yes, she refunded them the entrance price. I can only imagine how traumatized that kid was - I had a few icky moments myself, later on.

I saw a similar incident.. when I went to see AI in theatres. Some dad took his daughters to see Hailey Joel Osmont. As they walked by, I said to the dad "You know this is a Stanley Kubric film, right?" He just muttered something about him knowing best.
Guess what? when his face melted, there was a lot of screaming in the front row followed by them leaving.

As for getting money back at a theatre.. John Travolta still owes me $10 and two hours of my life back for Battlefield Earth. Gah..
