My husband and I have been very curious as to how do you know which recipes to use them with?

Since there is such a difference between the stats on a secondary tool rank 1 and a priimary tool rank 22 I don't really use the secondary one but if you believe the information available on the ZAM database they state which tool to use.

There is a little square with a (golden I think) P for primary or a (Silver I think) S for secondary.

What do you mean by which recipe to use them with? You can do any recipe with Main/Off tool, the only difference is the result. For example, a Main tool will produce extra nuggets on HQ, but the Off tool will produce nuggets +1/+2/+3 on HQ, the chance of success will be relatively the same and dependent on the tool attributes. Some recipes though like Jade get 2 x Jadeite +1 on HQ 3 with main (NQ is Nephrite, HQ 1 = Jadeite, HQ 2 = 2 x Jadeite, I've got them all), so I have no idea what's plausible for off tool HQ.

when crafting stuff that makes multiples.. aka not armor or weps

main hand gives +1 +2 ect
off hand instead of +1 2 ect you get more of tthe crafted item like 6-8 instead of 4 for +1 2 respectivly

Q. I am able to choose between using my main hand or off hand tool when beginning a synthesis. What is the difference?
A. Main hand and off hand tools have varying characteristics which manifest themselves in different ways when a high-quality result is achieved while synthesizing. There are many possible outcomes. For instance, a successful synthesis with a main hand tool may result in a +1 or +2 item, while the result obtained with an off hand tool may be a higher yield of regular quality items.

Honestly, easiest way to find out which tool is better for a synth, is to just try them out. I found for example, iron pliers seem easier to make using my file compared to the blacksmith hammer, and vice versa for Iron awls. As for multiples/+1,2, etc. I think it's more based on the synth. I've hq'd tons of nuggets using the mainhand and always ended up with larger quantities, not sure if using the offhand would result in +1 versions since the rng hates me when I attempt to HQ nuggets using my file.

According to one of the Ask the Devs-- stats, the Primary and Offhand go off different stats to help with success/fail

From what I've seen so far, main hand tools tend to have more +Craftsmanship than +Magic Craftsmanship. Offhand tools tend to have more +Magic Craftsmanship than +Craftsmanship. The trouble is, the way they add a second type of main hand tool + the way they tier the optimum ranks for tools, you frequently end up with a main hand tool that's better for all around synthesis where you're only selecting a different tool if you're aiming for increased quantity from HQ instead of +1/2/3 etc.

Not really, GLD (Goldsmith) main hand for brass nugget = more, offhand for brass nugget = +1/+2/+3, I have had +1 Nugget before, but I just dumped the offhand altogether. The only time when you're worried about +1/+2/+3 is the final product, and it seems both tools will produce + when HQ. No reason to waste an inv slot to carry an offhand tool around.

I ditched a lot of my off-hand tools as well, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. Iron Doming Hammer (rank 22 armorer MH tool) has higher +Craftsmanship than Iron Pliers (rank 27 armorer OH tool) but the +Magic Craftsmanship on the pliers is much higher than the doming hammer. But then you get to the Iron Raising Hammer (rank 32 armorer MH) and it has higher +Craft and +Mag. Craft than either the iron doming hammer or the pliers. The insinuation is that certain recipes may benefit more from Mag. Craft than straight Craftsmanhip and in that case you'd see a benefit from using the offhand tool until you have access to a "secondary" MH tool at the optimal rank.
