DO NOT REINSTALL FFXIV (MAJOR BUGS)Follow

I don't know if SE realizes this, but if you reinstall FFXIV and patch it straight from the CD installation, it only downloads 2 patches that's less than 300 mb. Apparently, SE forgot to include the rest of the patches so the game runs extremely buggy. I don't even know how it allows us ingame without a complete patch. The game recognizes it as the latest version.

I tried it myself after hearing other people having the problem when reinstalling FFXIV. Well, now it seems that my configuration does nothing. The textures looks extremely terrible compared to before reinstalling. There are blocks and rough edges on all the character models. Apparently hardware mouse does not work properly either. Before the reinstall, I could use my mouse4 and mouse5 button, but now it doesn't work.

I give up.

Do you still have the beta client? SE posted something a while ago about not installing the retail version without completely removing the beta client first.

No, I installed on a completely new ssd. (Solid State Drive) I do not have the beta client. Also, the only two patches it downloads and installs are 9/19/2010 and 10/26/2010. It doesn't download any other patches.

I reinstalled FFXIV on a new com and brought along EVERY single patch file that I downloaded on my previous com with me. The game only installed those 2 that you mentioned. Still it worked fine for me. Could it be your com? What are the settings on your com? Also the specs of your com.

It's the same computer that had FFXIV working 2 days ago. It was literally just a reinstall.

Win7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel Core i7 930 @ 2.8GHz
6GB of DDR3 Memory (Tri-Channel)
Corsair SSD Force (This is the new drive I bought today and reinstalled on)
ATI Radeon 5800 Series
Razer Diamondback 3G Mouse
Asus Motherboard P6X58D-E
All drivers and windows is updated to latest version

You pretty much confirmed what I said. I said that the current updater is not patching all the patches necessary to run the game properly. You said you brought along every single patch file that you downloaded on your previous comp and the game only installed the two I mentioned. Obviously, I don't have all those patches that you brought along from your previous computer. I'm trying to get all the patches through the updater, but it only gives me the two mentioned. Do you understand the problem? The updater is not patching properly because it's missing over 5GB worth of patches.

Send them a bug report. I'm sure they'll fix it by January.

I sent to the technical support department. I'll contact them via live-chat later today during business hours. Although, I'm pretty sure those live-chat people have no idea wtf they are doing since I've already contacted them once and told them what the problem was, yet they blamed it on my internet.

LOL

Well, at least we know SE didn't outsource their customer service department. Guess they like to keep a consistent level of idiocy in all departments.

Obviously you are not getting my point. Let me rephrase it.

-I have all the patch files.
-I have a second computer.
-I placed in all the patch files in their respective folders after installation.
-I run patch updater.
-Patch updater only used these 2 files that you mention and ignored the other files.
(the rest wasn't installed even though I have the files. Windows 7 will always prompt when installing each patch, and I know they are not installed as the file is still in the folder.)
-I run the game and it works fine.

Side Note, isn't the first patch file about 433MB?

Obviously you're not getting his point. He reinstalled. He does not have the patch files from the previous install to place in the new install. When he runs the updater, it does not give him those missing patches.

And of course the updater is not going to download previous files if you already installed them.

Now it could be possible that SE bundled the earlier patches into the last two, but somehow I doubt it.

If you want to run your test again, uninstall the second client you just updated, reinstall it without moving any patches from your other install, and see what happens.

I think you don't get it. He got the patchfiles but the updater won't install all of them.

Most patches we got up till now were just updated files. Nothing new added. That would explain why only these files get updated to the newest version.
But I remember there were more files patched the first time after new installation. The updater and then 3 or 4 game patches.
Really seems like the updater doesn't check for updates properly.

To the OP:
You said that you installed it on a new SSD. Did you do a full reinstall of your OS, drivers and programs?
If you had a normal HDD before and didn't reinstall from scratch that might be causing problems too.

However, this really is a case for support.
Maybe you could post the supports answer for users with similar problems.

Fully uninstall and reinstall the program again.. it sucks, but you're going to have to do it. That's all tech support is going to tell you to do anyways.

I have reinstalled my operating system two times and didn't have a problem either time when I reinstalled FFXIV on the newly formatted drive. I didn't copy any files, and yes - it downloaded two patch files.. I don't remember the size, but I left the download overnight.

Before installing FFXIV, make sure you have downloaded new video, sound and motherboard drivers.. have those installed and rebooted BEFORE you install FFXIV.

So no, I understood him fine. He has no patches TO install except the two the updater gives him.

Anyway, my next question would be: is there a difference between the CE and regular edtion discs? If the OP is installing from a CE, it may be an earlier client than the regular edition as it had to be pushed out ahead of time for people to have their headstart. If so, there could be a small conflict occuring between the updater and the earlier client version of the CE.

Edit: The reason I ask this is I have the regular edition and my first patch was as you said, around 400mb. I'm pretty sure all my patches combined have been far less than the 5gb the OP mentions missing.

Another thing the OP could give us would be the size of his install folder, so we can compare it to ours. If there is a sizeable difference, then there is indeed a problem.

No you didn't. What he meant was that even though he copied many files over the game only used 2 of them.

As for the OP, I'm sure his patch file was corrupted somehow. Only option is to reinstall the game and use the patch files downloaded separately from somewhere else.

Same here, I even then decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and reinstall it.
Worked fine as normal for me.

He's saying that the game ignored the other files he transferred, and only used the same two patches that the OP downloaded.

It doesn't matter how many files were copied over because only two were installed. And given that others have reinstalled without issue, it sounds like the problem is on the OP's end which is good in a way, because the OP will likely be able to remedy the situation sooner than if they had to wait for SE to fix whatever might have been wrong on their end.

Copying patch files over means nothing if the patcher doesn't install them. If you copy 10 files over and the patcher only installs two and the game runs fine, then two were all that was needed, yes?

The retail version of the game never had anywhere near 5gb of patches. The first patch we had to download when the game launched was ~400mb. Every patch since then has been < 50mb (typically around 18-19mb as I recall). Given that others have reinstalled without issue, it stands to reason that SE has rolled several patches into one, which makes a ton of sense because there's no point to having people download 5 different versions of the same file(s) to patch and repatch after a reinstall.

Double check your drivers. Double check that you have the proper DirectX version installed. It's also possible that your SSD needs an RMA, but that's beyond the scope of this discussion.

Sounds to me like a DirectX issue. You'd be amazed at how many people scream up and down that everything is up to date until someone beats them about the head and chest until they break down and download the DirectX 9.0 package directly from Microsoft and install it and all of a sudden...voila! No more issues! Try it. It's good fun. And don't tell me you've already got DX11 why would you need DX9 it's up to date I swear. Just try it.

The only version of the game client that required > 1gb for any patch was the beta client.

Zorvon, your completely misunderstanding something...

The op did a fresh install, and the patcher downloaded and installed only the 2 latest patches. he is having problems. right?
ok

Banelash reinstalled also but, he transfered over all his downloaded files TO BE installed BUT only the latest 2 were installed and none of the previous updates were (basically meaning his install is EXACTLY the same as the OPs) yet he is not having issues. I've also done the same with the same results. only the 2 were installed while all the previous ones were not, but my install works fine.

Get it now? :)

The OP has an issue somewhere else. The updater downloading and installing just the 2 patches is not the issue here.

I'm not sure how your PC is set up.
But make sure you have FFXIV installed to the same drive as your "My Documents" folder. (SE stated this is a "must" for FFXIV installation)

Uninstall FFXIV once again. delete the FFXIV folder in the My Documents > My games (i think thats where it's kept)
Reinstall from there.

the problem isn't with the game. It has something to do with how you uninstalled FFXIV in the first place, the way your PC is set up/configuration, or where you're installing FFXIV again.

I did a few upgrades to my PC a couple weeks ago. Wiped my HDDs and reinstalled everything new. That included FFXIV. My game is working just the same as it was before I added new stuff so I'm not sure if I did something special by accident or maybe just got lucky? >.>

Anyways, I reinstalled the game and it updated and everything just fine...

I'd agree with Aurelius that your issue sounds more like a drivers issue (Either your Vid card itself or Directx related). A fresh install on a brand new HDD shouldn't cause any issues. The issues people were complaining about sounded to me more like they were installing on top of an existing installation (or uninstalling and reinstalling on the same drive).

You would not be able to get into the game without the necessary patches being up to date - so start looking elsewhere for the issue. Update your drivers, and make sure that all your hardware is recognized.

On Friday, my game was running fine, mouse4 and mouse5 worked just fine with the razer diamondback 3g drivers/software installed to make my mouse4 and mouse5 work as ctrl and alt. On Saturday, I left my character and computer on to sell stuff in my personal bazaar. I came home and my computer had crashed. Well, Windows 7 would no longer start because my hard drive went bad. On Sunday, I went out and bought a new hard drive, an SSD. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64 bit. I installed the chipset drivers. I did the Windows Update. I installed the new ATI Catalyst drivers. I installed the latest DirectX 9.0C. I then installed FFXIV and it took under 30 minutes to patch it. Back in pre-release, it took over 3 hours and the patches were around 6GB. It even says on the installation manual and requirements that there are 6GB of updates. Well, there's only about 400MB of updates now. After it finished patching, I closed it and opened the FFXIV config. I turned all the settings to maximum like I had it before and I checked the hardware mouse option to turn it on. I can get into the game just perfectly fine, but I notice a major problem. The character models all look like they have wood textures on their skin, it has many lines and blocks. Also, my mouse4/mouse5 does not work ingame anymore, even though I tested it outside of the game, and it works. This leads me to believe that there are patches missing that is causing the game to run unstable. Also, everyone that I know who reinstalled the game after the 10/26/2010 patch has been crashing often even though they did not crash before reinstalling. So, what is my problem and how do I fix it?

FFXIV Folder Size:
Size: 9.05 GB
Size on Disk: 9.41 GB
Contains 137,442 Files and 19,252 Folders

THis is what you probably did:

While thinking you were settign everything to "MAX" by selecting the option on the bottom you set your buffer size to 2/3 window size (the bottom option)

This will create very pixelated/blocky characters

Set your buffer size to: Resolution or double (double really drops my FPS down low)

heres steps to set your buffer size:

start menu > all programs > SQUARE ENIX > Final Fantasy XIV > Final Fantasy XIV Config > General > Video Settings > Buffer Size : Resolution (recommended)

and FYI:

the pre-release alpha/beta had larger patches to download than the launch client. as everyone else was saying the launch client has about 400-500mb of info to d/l.

So, what is my problem and how do I fix it?

FFXIV Folder Size:
Size: 9.05 GB
Size on Disk: 9.41 GB
Contains 137,442 Files and 19,252 Folders

9.05 GB (9,725,730,541 bytes)

9.41 GB (10,110,193,664 bytes)

137,442 Files, 19,251 Folders

You've got everything. Try reverting all settings to default and see if you still have major issues. Then change the settings one at a time until you find the culprit.

The CE/Pre-release is the exact same client as the launch client. It's the same dvd I'm installing off of. Also, I have the buffer size set to resolution. All my settings are the same before the reinstallation. So why does my game act differently now? It doesn't make sense. Everything is set to the very highest and there's blocks on character models and weird looking lines? The world/environment looks perfect. It's just the character skins.

Can you post a screen shot?

That didn't help so I called the number they provided above. It didn't take long to get connected. I told the guy my problem and he said that I've tried everything that I could do, which was uninstall and reinstall all drivers. Since I did it twice and it did not work. He said there is nothing they can do on their end. He also said I just have to wait for the next update and it might fix the problems.

Well, I just don't get it. How does my game go from being perfectly fine and then everything just going boom after the reinstall.

Have you tried a different video driver version? maybe go to the previous release instead of the current?

go to microsofts website and get directx 9.0c for windows 7
here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

last thing to do is select different config options.
Change your resolution play the game.
change your buffer size go back into the game.
change your shadow settings ect ect.

last thing to do is uninstall then reinstall maybe you have corrupt data.

Did all that more than two times already. I'll just ignore the mouse4 and mouse5 not working. It seems that setting buffer size to double fixed the graphic problem, but I had it on resolution before. The game is extremely laggy now with buffer size set to double. :(

I had some trouble with patching the game early on. I found a trick that might help you get all the patch files. Go to your FFXIV directory and find the game.ver file. Open it with notepad and you will see some numbers in a date format. Change the data there to something like 2010.09.01.0000 (this will trick the patcher into thinking you have a pre-CE game and will download all the patches you need).

Hope this helps.

I'm curious about your problem, I want to see a screen shot of the problem you're describing.

Sometimes the shading on the characters looks weird on my end, like there faces might have several grades of shading with hard lines between each gradient.
I kinda looks like their faces were carved out of wood. Noticed this a few times, but only notice it on extreme close ups. during CS.

durign normal gameplay I never encounter this shading effect.

I want to see how extreme this effect is on your end.

It might be Video draver problem. Uninstall your video driver run clean sweep (cleans out left over driver extensions in your system reg) so that way you have a nice new clean install on your system. (use a different version than the ones that you first experienced your problems with)

I reinstalled FFXIV on a new com and brought along EVERY single patch file that I downloaded on my previous com with me. The game only installed those 2 that you mentioned. Still it worked fine for me. Could it be your com? What are the settings on your com? Also the specs of your com.

I'm sure they'll fix it by January.
lol come on now, PS3 release is due in March not January.

No, I didn't. But then noone yet showed me where the OP said he transferred files, and I just got tired of arguing what amounted to a trivial point anyway.

However, my question to you is, how much butthurt have I given you that your only reason to enter a thread is to *try* to take a jab at me? Put some cream on it and grit your teeth, the pain will go away eventually. But then, you've probably been told that before.;)

I actually enjoy trolling from time to time to take the edge off. You were my choice because you got as the children call it "owned". No hard feelings whatsoever. Although the fact that you automatically presume that I enjoy sexual intercourse of the **** variety, as well as your need to come back to the thread solely to address me calling you out tells me a lot about how "butthurt" you are.

I see no "pwnage" in this thread, at least none prior to my previous reply to you, of course.

Hmmm, I never said any such thing. "Butthurt" is a common expression, generally means you got you widdle feelin's hurted.
The **** *** thing? That's all you, bro. Must be your subconscious guiding you. But hey, there's plenty of room out here if you're really needing to come out.

I look at the front page, I see a new response to the thread, I open the thread and see it's some silly little ****** trying to play like he's one of the big boys and *trying* to belittle me, and I let him know he's got a ways to go. Nothing unusual about that, and most definitely no butthurt on my end of the conversation.

Have a nice day.

Ooo Zorvan pwned me :-(. Beauty of the Internet though we could do this all day. You made no reference to my enjoyment of **** ***? Oh wait:

Yea... That's definitely my latent homosexuality.

I guess I'm a silly little ****** for mocking your inability to finish an argument and your skill at turning tail and running from any thread you get "bored" by. It's no wonder I'm trying to be one of the big boys, I want to be just like you!

Except that we are on zam's fansite forums for FFXIV and not the debate club. There are no big-boys, bigboy, all you have is your fragile little epeen, which is why you feel the need to defend yourself for an admitted troll. One who's not very good in the first place.

You just turn tale and run again. I see since more than one person told you that your wrong you've felt no need to champion your opinion any longer. Isn't a "big boy" such as yourself able to defend his view from more than one person?

It doesn't matter. I'm starting to wonder if you understand how the patcher works. The first thing it does when you launch the game from your desktop is check with the server to see if your client version is up to date. If it's not, the server will send it the torrent files for the patch archives you need. The patcher, being a torrent client, will then check to see if you already have the files and, if so, whether or not you have all of a particular archive. If you do, it doesn't bother downloading them and instead proceeds to install them.

If the patch files the people were transferring over were different from the ones the OP had to download, the people transferring the files would have had to download the different ones as well. The fact that they didn't said that amongst their collection of previous patches, they had the same ones the OP had to download, only to SE's credit they've set it up so that if patches 3 through 6 all updated the same file, you only have to download patch 6 because 3 through 5 would be obsolete.

That's why we've been trying to tell the OP that it's probably not a problem on SE's end and to double check those things that most commonly cause these types of issues. But if you're looking for any possible way to justify your resentment for SE...oh...we've had this conversation before. Something about...cynicism?

Ya, that was it.

What part of I wasn't going to argue a trivial point is so hard to understand?

The OP stated he was on a new hard drive with a fresh install. The person replying to him was talking about "transferring files" from an old installation to a new one, which the OP was obviously unable to do.

So now we get your explanation that people were talking about the updater "transferring files", which is not the "transferring files" I was apparently basing my argument on.

So it apparently comes down to I was concentrating on one form of "transferring files" while everyone else was referring to another "transferring files". So I guess there was a misunderstanding on my part.

Fine, I get it. Zorvan made a boo-boo.

I'll even thank you, Aurelius, for pointing out where I was misinterpreting.
