Severely Over-ranked Tools?Follow

Random question to all crafters, have you noticed a significant handicap from going with a higher level tool? I've noticed that with weapons durability loss is much higher, the stats tend to be comparable, switching to better (generally) only a few levels after the optimal rank weapon.

For instance, you're rank 19, how would the R22 tool vs R32 tool fair? I've seen the R32 tool for less gil than the R22 tool in my craft and was curious if I'd suffer significantly for choosing the higher tool.

Edit: Previous research has indicated the increase in durability loss is not as noticeable, so I guess I'm asking more regarding stats, though confirmation/dispute of the durability not being as noticeable would be appreciated.

Go with the tool closest to your rank.

Failing that, go with the higher tool that's easier for you to repair. ^_^

It's hard to say. Best bet is to equip both and compare stats. I don't use any rank 32 tools because unless they're made by armorer, leatherworker, or weaver (aka none), I can't repair them yet. Going to push blacksmith to 22 this weekend (or maybe even during the week) specifically for that purpose, though. My guess, however, is that at rank 19 you'd be better of with the rank 27 offhand tool in most cases than the rank 32 MH tool.

My Weaver is rank 14 and I get higher stats from the level 7 bronze needle than from the level 22 iron needle. If you have a choice, go with your rank 22 tool, but if you can find the rank 32 tool cheap, get it and compare with whatever you're using now.

Just a warning, I've heard that crafting becomes more difficult after rank 20, so it may be worth it to spend the gil on the rank 22 tool rather than gimp yourself until rank 32.

I definitely agree you just need to look at the stats...

Case in point, right now my Weaving is Rank 16...
Needle ... OR ... Crafting ... Mag.Craft . Control
----------------------------------------------------------
Bronze ...... 7 .... 27 ......... 20 .......... 19
Iron ......... 22 ... 33 ......... 26 .......... 24
Thousand . 42 ... 31 ......... 23 .......... 29

And those are the actual stats that appear on my Attributes and Gear page.
So... yeah, I'm clearly better off with Iron Needle than Bronze, but would I be better off using Thousand for more control but less on Crafting and Mag.Craft? I don't really know...
My friend and I basically figured out early on that as you rank the tools above you will slowly get better, when you rank into the OR they seem to get a big boost, but as you rank above them they no longer gain.

So Bronze won't get any better for me.
Iron will keep getting better and surge at 22.
Thousand will keep getting better and at some point be clearly better than Iron.

Mostly, if you can buy a tool early, go ahead. Then just check it versus your current tool as you rank up. But that's going to be based on availability. I still haven't gotten a better scythe than Bronze for my rank 30 Botanist because I just haven't found anyone selling it. So it's better to get them when they are available or at a good price than risk not being able to find them at all later. I was lucky with Weaving... I actually checked someone's bazaar and they were practically giving Thousand Needles away at 5k (no I'm not forgetting any zeros) each. So hellz yeah I grabbed one... and when I'm ready for it, it will be ready for me.

Sincerely,
