Dress for Success! An Equipment GuideFollow

#1 Nov 16 2010 at 2:48 AM Rating: Excellent
Greetings all. After much observation, research and experiments I am happy to present the newest installment in my FFXIV: 101 series of guides. Osarion's Equipment Guide.

I've seen a lot of questions pop up lately regarding the things that this guide covers, so I've been hurrying to get it completed. In this new guide, I cover things such as:
HQ gear.
Gear damage.
Optimal Rank.
Favored Classes.
Accessories/Slot Cost.
Overview of gear suggestions by rank tier.

I welcome any feedback and suggestions!

Very well written, although i'm interested in finding out how you derived that HQ+1 was a 10% bonus? Was that mentioned by SE or did you do personal tests?

Looks good. I do have one suggestion though if I may.

This is listed under the DoW gear suggestion category:

Quote:
Disciples of War, as the Melee classes of FFXIV are going to want to use mostly medium to heavy style gears. They're able to use light armor, but there's almost no point in it.

I think this is a bit misleading. The gear choice you use greatly depends on your class. For example as a Pugilist I don't wear medium or heavy armor at all. I generally wear cloth and leather, which I have always considered to be light armor. Archers also fall into this category. They can wear some lighter chain mail (which I suppose would be considered medium armor) but they also wear a good deal of cloth and leather too. In addition Archer isn't a melee class. I would reword this line more along the lines of:

"Disciples of War, as the physical damage dealing classes, are capable of wearing light to heavy armor styles. Which type you choose will be dependent on the class you play."

After that perhaps add in a small blurb to give examples like:

-Gladiator: Meduim, Heavy
-Pugilist: Cloth, Leather
-Archer: Cloth, Leather, Medium

Having a general section for the other disciplines seems to be okay since they are similar in their needs, but due to the variety in the DoW classes, I think a bit more separation and clarification is needed.

This one I tested personally by equipping various pieces of gear and noting their effects. As I mention in the guide, the gear's listing will always remain the same, be it a NQ, +1/2/3. However, by equipping, say, a chest piece +1 with 50 defense (within optimal rank and class) when my defense would be 25, the +1 will give you 80 total vs 75.

I'd like to test the +2 and 3, but for the life of me I can't find any +2/3 gear that fits my rank and classes!

If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times. The best gear for any class at any time is the gear you're willing to pay me the most for. Conjurers in Iron Haubergeons are OP, but only if they bought it from me. For a lot of gil.

(err...thanks for the guide d(o.o)b)

Thanks for this feedback! I'm kinda showing my inexperience with DoW so far. I only play mages and crafters Smiley: wink

Hey no problem at all. I'm the same way when it comes to DoW. Give me a melee weapon and I'm all set. Give me a wand and I'm more likely to poke my eye out than cast a spell. :p

Agreed with Lantesh on that 1. Toss out the "There's no point to it" part on DoWs and light armor. 1st thing that comes to mind there is the Trapper/Tracker/Bowyer sets for Archer.

Useful guide though, a few of my LS friends could benefit from such a guide. Mainly the "Hey Leeloo, what's good for my class? Can you make it?" bunch = D

The +1= +10% is most definitely wrong. Tried this with a Def 76 +1 gear item; it gave me 80 Def.
That's not 10%. Unless, of course the bonus is also dependent on how much you have passed the
minumum optimal rank of that specific item (I was 31, the equipment 30).

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll have to try and find some gear with higher values (such as the one you listed) and test them out. As far as I have been able to tell, there's no penalty for wearing armor for which your character is too farabove optimal rank.

On a related note... HQ gear would certainly make a nice topic for the next "advanced" Dev Q&A. Knowing SE it's probably some massively varying and confusing system, lol.

Well, they already said they'll ditch the +1 +2 +3 raw material distinction, so...

Btw: A bone ring +1 is just as good as a +2 and a +3; so the stat increase definitely
is percentage based and rounded up, since bone ring is 1/1/1/1 in all four categories.

My testing of +1 and +2 gear shows a 5% per + bonus.

Here's the link to my +2 stats:

Great guide.

I would like to add that you can also get +Perception for gatherers in the waist slot.

Nice guide.

Are there any drawbacks/penalties to wearing gear below your optimal rank?....besides of course being below your optimal rank. Does straying "outside" of optimal go both ways?

If your class level is much higher than your equipment level, does the equipment suffer from an increased wear rate?

Fantastic guide! Very well written with loads of good info!

Quote:
When your gear falls below 50%, you will receive the Gear Damage status.

* Weapons: Receive a penalty to damage and accuracy.
* Armor: Absorbs less damage, lowers evasion and any other bonus given by that piece of armor.

When your gear falls below 25%, you will receive the Heavy Gear Damage status.

* Weapons: Receive a heavier penalty to damage and accuracy, as well as a lowered amount of skill points received.
* Armor: Absorbs even less damage, and further lowers evasion and all other stat bonuses for that piece of armor.

Some LS mates and I were discussing the effects of damaged gear penalties today and this clears it up nicely. Not that i'm doubting you or anything, but was this announced by SE or did you find out through actual testing? Just curious as I may have missed it if SE did post something on this.

The point about the SP makes me cringe!!! There have been times i've just grinded away with my weapon in the red (due to laziness to return for repairs) and god only knows how much SP i've lost out on it. If I could rate you up I would, kudos good sir!

Thanks for taking to time to make this! I learned a few things in there that now I'm going to pay more attention to in-game.
