As always, we would like to express our gratitude to all players enjoying their adventures in Eorzea.

Today, we have decided to extend the free trial period an additional 30 days. Please refer to the following for more details.

We have also added a Topics post detailing a portion of the content heading your way in the two large-scale version updates slated for late November and mid-December. This month’s version update, tentatively scheduled for November 25, marks the first step in bringing about significant improvement to FINAL FANTASY XIV, guided in large part by the feedback you, the players, have provided. We are adamant that you should be given the opportunity to experience these changes firsthand before deciding to fully commit to the game. We encourage everyone to view today’s post, as well as the previous Topics post from November 11 outlining the development team’s roadmap for the coming months. Further details regarding payment options and future version updates will be posted as they become available.

Good on them. This will allow people to see some of the major changes and then decide if they really want to quit or stay.

I doubt Japanese people stop work for American holidays. Contrary to popular belief, the world doesn't revolve around America and what you are doing at any given time. I'm sure people in other countries go about their buisness on your Thanksgiving, and Independence Day, Presidents day.

Considering most people are with family on Thanksgiving day it's probably one of the best days for a patch. They can't please everyone, but Nov. 25 probably sees a dip in people online.

Guess I'm sticking around for the November update after all. This thread brought a smile to my face. I really want to get my hopes up that this patch is going to make me want to play again, but at the same time, I don't.

I'm still cautiously optimistic, but I'm glad to see that my ******** doesn't always fall on deaf ears.

To go for the more obvious and direct answer: Thanksgiving was a holiday invented primarily by Americans and Canadians and popularized by FDR to stimulate the economy in the weeks leading up to the Christmas season. While Thanksgiving allegedly takes its roots from harvest festivals and community gathering, the "holiday" in the sense of what day it is and how it is celebrated is largely an American thing. Just as we don't celebrate Japanese holidays or Spanish holidays, etc etc, the rest of the world doesn't really care about our holidays for the most part either.

I was arguing w/ a friend yesterday (due to the email about trial coming to an end) that I think it would have been in SE's best interest to release the Nov patch prior to the trial ending.. that way a lot of people on the fence can at least regain *some* trust in SE.. that's of course assuming they don't bomb the patch :D lol

I'm happy that SE thought so too:
"We are adamant that you should be given the opportunity to experience these changes firsthand before deciding to fully commit to the game."

Of course, a small part of me wonders.. maybe they saw all the cancellations yesterday (as a reaction to the free trial ending email) and said, "oh oh, lets give them another free month so they can check out our cool new updates" =)

There maybe a little credence to that. Perhaps that email they sent out was a bit of a "feeler" to see how many ppl were willing to pay. And when accounts started being cancelled they hit the "Oh **** button" again.

Or maybe SE is really a noble charitable organization, that feels bad for its fans and out of pure kindness felt the need to bless us with more free time to enjoy their product.

So much for that whole argument of "they NEVER extend free trials". Very smart move on SE's part, they would have lost a lot of subs if they didn't. Pretty sure that after releasing that announcement about trial ending they got bombarded w/ people cancelling their accounts and realized how unwise it was not to have an update out before people pay.

This is good news. I was on the fence coming up to the end of the trial and this is the one thing that will definitely make me stick it out and give SE another chance to redeem my $75 :D

Good move SE. Keep the communication coming as well.

I was actually interested to see the subscriptions after the trial ended. I'm guessing they were expected to be pretty ugly.

Well, now we will be able to see at least some of the changes. I'd be willing to bet that they have a new director of PR or something that is coaching them in this. Maybe someone on the NA side that's advising them how to best reach out to the NA subscribers.

I'm already dreading the day a month from now when that inevitable "notification email of second free trial period ending!!" thread pops back up on the forums and we hear those who were originally gonna quit this time around come back and complain some more about how the game is still broken =P

oh wells, for those of us who never intended to quit despite the free time ending, this is great news. I'm especially excited about the reduced shard requirement for synthesis. I dont' remember reading about this in their earlier announcements? Maybe shard prices will finally start to stabilize a bit after this.

just seen this on the loadstone, and i cant be happier, although i would have gladly paid for the next months or so, this a bonus.
i enjoy the game as it is, sure theres a few things wrong but theres always gonna be a patch to fix it, and atleast SE listen to the people, and the extra 30 days shows that they do give a crap.
thats my thought anyway, im sure there wil be someone who disagrees but everyone is entitled to there opinion.

Looks like they bought themselves some time, they'd better make it worth it! I'm fearful of hoping right now, I've been so let down by them lately. I've felt like they just have no idea what they're doing. Like they want to do the right thing, but they really don't know what it is. Their recent interviews have been different though, they've been much more candid and open, and I have to admit that they're giving me some hope that they in fact can do it. We'll see!

The way they have worded the email, it actually appears like they are planning on getting BOTH updates out before this trial period ends now.

They have one scheduled for "Late-November" and the second in "Mid December" stating that they want people to see "These Changes" before choosing to commit to the game.

So basically they are going to try to get all of the main "FIXES" that they plan out before you actually have to pay. Then in March, have content/more regular updates to add.

Good on them. I never changed my renewel from 6 months, but am good to see that many people might stick around because of this. Very smart business decision.

To me, this was an absolute no-brainer. It's crunch time now, and as much as they claim they're not trying to compete with WoW or "That Star-wars MMO," they absolutely are. The rushed release of 14 pretty much coincides with a time when WoW loyalty is at its all-time low. The current WoW expansion's content has been exhausted for almost a year now. The game was dumbed down to the point that any conglomeration of mostly-retarded wombats could successfully negotiate the content in the game. Even when this expansion was brand-spanking new, they had only one endgame dungeon, and it was being recycled from vanilla... so if you were a hardcore from the get go like me, you beat that content in all of two weeks and thought, "Now what?" The time-release capsule of content in Wrath of the Lich King slowly gave up its goods, but I always found myself thinking, "Now what?" Well, the 'Now what?' is Final Fantasy 14.

If I'm SE marketing, I'm going to squeeze the release of my game in before they catch any momentum with their new installment (Cataclysm) which is due out 12/7. Is the game unfinished? You bet. Is there a promise on the table that stuff will get better? Absolutely. Bottom line: regardless of the state of the game currently, they got 14 rolled out at a very smart time. Now, they've extended the free trial through the big promise patches to keep those who are on the fence corralled in a bit longer. As far as MMOs that are released with little to no content and then strategically patched up as folks reach the upper end? Let he who is without sin throw the first stone. I remember about a decade ago when the EQI expansion "Shadows of Luclin" came out. Hardcore guilds were reaching endgame content in record time, and realizing that the endgame content wasn't even on paper yet. After a bunch of community dissention, there was a huge patch, an even bigger apology, and now EQI is slated to celebrate their what? 12th anniversary? I think from a marketing standpoint, you look at your game and say, "There's enough stuff here to put it out and get people interested... get them started levelling. There's like a billion classes they can play x 50 ranks per class. Let's get this printed and put a team on content while folks get the basics down." I'm ok with that. They had me at the F in Final Fantasy. :)

I for one love this game. I love what it could be... its vision. I'm more than willing to wait it out and see what the future holds. With all the hype these days and such easy access to trailers, gameplay vids, leaked alpha and beta footage... you guys fell in love with what 14 could and should be. Now give them the opportunity to make that happen. Oh, wait, they made it REALLY REALLY EASY! It's free too. Well played, SE... Well... Played.

Wow, I just read the one best reason for the extension for a free trial period yesterday. Why go to a pay game after 30 and 60 days if no changes was made in game.I planned on buying a Alla premium account after 30 days but SE keeps pushing it back. I'll put the game savings toward paying for a Alla premium account. Thanks SE.

Good job SE!

Keep the communication and more importantly the acceptance of criticism up!

I can't wait to see what this next patch actually brings.

Yes, I'm hot and cold when it comes to SE, but really it's all just giving credit where credit is due. Now it's time for SE to deliver on these patches.

In concordance with the patch date and on an odd side note, I remember playing FFXI a long time ago on Thanksgiving night; I was level 20 feeding my Chocobo.

This is not the SE of late... I definately sense a change in attitude from them. While I know some of it is a last ditch effort to ensure the highest number of subs for the money folks, they still didn't have to do this and would have had an income of some sort.

Now if we can get some content before the PS3 release, and if XIIIvs is as good as the hype, and and and... maybe we'll see a resurgance in SE that resembles Square Soft by more than name.

I'm actually rooting for them again as a company, this had to be a hard decision to make for them. As others have said, cautiously optimistic is the way forward.

Very glad to see that this SHOULD cover free play for both the November and December updates and allow players to see if their changes make FFXIV worth sticking around for.

I think the biggest thing I'm looking forward to is just the option to have additional retainers & auto-sort inventory so that I can start organizing and crafting/gathering again.
