FINAL FANTASY XIV Free Trial Period Extended AGAIN (Nov. 16)Follow

Here I was preparing for my account to be debited and SE have unexpectedly increased our trial period by yet ANOTHER 30 days! I almost thought I'd been playing with the kids too rough and concussed myself! Square, it's okay. You don't need to win me over anymore! I'm already sold!

Still, this is another incentive for the fence-sitting players who considered cancelling their accounts this month to see things through to the big updates. News like this makes me want to hug an SE executive. I only hope that we can slowly dispel the complaint posts and get the forum on track to being a constructive happy community.

Thank you SE. You've made my day again!

This is one of those rare times it's acceptable to post something as useless as:

WOOHOOOooOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!11!!oneonetwo!!!1

I'm over the bad foreplay XIV and I had but when it comes to the real thing SE performs well enough for me to reach multiple gamegasms.

Nice, I wasn't expecting this from Square Enix.

I'm really looking forward to the fixes and new features.

Looks like whoever said that email was in part a test was correct.. I'm glad they're not stupid enough to release these updates after asking people to pay them again, but I continue to be curious what the server populations would've been. It's clear that SE was pretty afraid of what it'd look like.

Well, the thing that will dispel the complaints is substance (read: content). The complaints wouldn't exist if the game didn't have the issues, and when the issues are gone, the complaints will be as well. I don't think that anyone here genuinely wants to complain for the sake of complaining - they just want an enjoyable Final Fantasy game.

Only time will tell if this is going to pay off in the end. There's a lot of people that aren't even checking back and have already buried themselves in other titles.

This is a very unorthodox method to keep people to stay in game. But will it be enough? I really really really REALLY(!!!) hope the updates will blow me away because not even free trials is not enough carrot-dangling-infront-of-me - for me.

Don't get me wrong. I want this game to be good, being an oldschool Squaresoft gamer and all...

Sorry to be gloomy amongst the celebrations but I got an e-mail today saying my card will be charged on the 20th November, following an e-mail announcing the billing of my account. I'll look out for it because to me it seems like I'm not receiving any free trial extension.

Hope you're right and this turns true though :)

Reebie, everyone got that email, but we got it yesterday, before this announcement. You should still be getting an extension.

Geffe, it's an XI joke from one of the community team. :) During VanaFest, Devin said something about the announcements blowing our faces off.

You gotta admit though, they are listening and they know they screwed up releaseing this game too early. Most of the people still playing this are the die hard ff fans hopeing for this game to get better (like myself). Hopefully they can tweek it enough before starwars old republic comes out.

SE had already emailed everyone saying the free trial was coming to an end. Suddenly, a day after, they change announce an extension of the trial.

Am I the only one who thinks this sounds as if a vast mayority canceled their game accounts after getting the email and they tried to salvage it?

I go to lodestone to see if they added another q&a or dev team thing. Then I see that they are extending the free trial again. I'm totally shocked and amazed by this. I really didn't expect them to make a move like this. I was planning on paying when this last trial is up. But, now I don't have to. I really like the fact that I don't have to pay for this coming month. Though, I do see why some say they shouldn't extend the trial period again.

This means my roommate gets to play another free month with his buddy pass. Which means he will most likely buy the game when it comes down to it. I think that this could be a really good thing they are doing. Though, I still see the con's in this.

This is a smart move from SE and I've seen a lot of people on these forums cancel for the main reason of the update being after the free trial, this might keep them if the patches aren't lack luster. Got to hand it to SE now though, they are all over the place now trying to keep customers and I like the direction they are headed.

Of course this happens almost immediately after I cancel my account.

I'm not saying that SE watches me and values my opinion more than the thousands of others who have canceled. The only thing I'm saying is,

Bottom line: regardless of the state of the game currently, they got 14 rolled out at a very smart time. Now, they've extended the free trial through the big promise patches to keep those who are on the fence corralled in a bit longer.

I'm skeptical that releasing a finished game at a later date would have somehow got them lower world population numbers than we're seeing now. The repeated trial extensions will help keep the players who are "on the fence," but the players who have already left are simply gone, and unlikely to return.

It was a smart release date for a good game. It was a stupid release date for a game that earned a mountain of negative publicity that won't be forgotten for years. With not a single positive review and absolutely terrible word-of-mouth even from hardcore FF fans, the game probably didn't lure a whole lot of WoW players, and it cost SE a good chunk of the diehard fans who would have played it after any release date.

SE can only hope that the PS3 version gets a new round of reviews, assuming the game is good by then.

I wasn't playing it at all, and with my free trial account closing in a week or so, I didn't want to be on the hook for a subscription charge because I forgot to cancel before the day it ended. I waited all this time just to see if they would make some actual changes or announce another free trial, and last night decided that they probably wouldn't.

I think it is great to extend it, thank you SE. I have two accounts, My main, I never cancelled since inception. My other account I cancelled because I got an email from SE saying that my free trial period will end on Nov 20. So now I read this news. Do you think I can reactivate my mule account and still be within the now extended free trial?

That's the thing though, enough of us (myself included) would have stuck around paying from next week onwards until around PS3 release that they could at least break even on server costs, if not make a tiny profit. PS3 release will see them quite a few more sales no matter what the reviews of the game are, and ultimately a few more paying subs. They could have scraped by easily I think. Like I said, this isn't a typical SE move.

Working for the largest "corporation" in the US, I'd have to say that this decision was something that was planned at least a week ago but only recently greenlit by the accounting folks and the big whigs. My "company" has a very difficult time implimenting changes to the money system on short notice, and by short notice I mean less than a month. Large companies tend to be like a runaway boulder, the little bumps along the way down the hill don't directly affect the direction of travel if at all.

I for one thought there was zero chance of this happening. I figured they'd be worried it would make them look desperate, which maybe it does, but I guess it's more important that they keep players around long enough to see the updates.

I don't mind saying I was wrong. SE is really doing right by its fans this month.

I expected them to start charging as usual at the end of November and then offer another free 30 days for people resubscribing after the early 2011 update. Maybe they'll do both now.

So a 1 month free trial is now 3 lol pretty cool i guess for those who still playing a little like myself. Joking aside pretty smart move to keep the ppl who dont plan on paying atleast around long enough to see the update.

lol at care about players ^^
they just want you to stick around for as long as possible, so the game doesnt totally die out.
then when they fixed the issues, and ppl come/stay, they wont care so much anymore.
if they cared, they would have fixed the issues 6 months ago.
they only *care* now, cause their sales are down by 70%

I'm not suprise because this is the only logical thing to do. Seriously, did you guys think SE was going to get people to pay for beta testing? It's not hard for them the numbers and see how many people will actualy play if they let the free play expire. Nothing worst then see a population drop of the cliff after a big change.

I applaud SE for this.

This ^

Can't say I didn't see it coming. This move is basically a 'We know the game isn't finished and we know that 3 months isn't enough time to fix all of the issues' fix. That and they fear the mass exodus to Cataclysm that is bound to happen in a few weeks time.

It is very, very difficult to create a program on this scale. Modifying it without breaking something is more difficult still. It is a valid argument that they should not have released the game at all until they were done with the next few updates (as some could argue that the game won't be "ready for release" until those things have been added). But saying that they should, or even could, have fixed these issues six months ago is just silly.

The more I learn about computers, the more I am convinced they are run by black magic. But that aside, it's not like we wave a magic wand over the hard drive and say "make it so" and the game is ready.

I think it's clear that they tested the waters with the "Trial ending soon" announcement. Then they watched for cancellations, probably saw a ton, and now are extending again as a reaction.

It just goes to prove that most people were gonna cancel soon as SE asked for a dime. They know it, they can easily view the exact numbers of cancellations with admin tools.

I´d rather enjoy my time by playing a fun, engaging and immersive FF mmo, but failing that, i´ll get my amusement from where i can get it.

I have had 3 consistent issues with this game, bad ui, lag, no content, fix those and you won´t see me complaining, infact, you won´t see me at all, i´ll be too busy playing (well, lack of ingame documentation and insane rng when it comes to SP and crafting is also an issue, but with fun content and no lag i could bear them).
