I think it probably also had to do with their need to stay relevant in gaming news. All this bad press is better than being utterly forgotten and with moves like this, they certainly keep the spotlight on themselves for a bit longer.

Maybe a little off topic but I notice a few admins have something like this in their signatures.

[ffxivsig]277809_1733338[/ffxivsig]

Granted, it looks broken right now but are these coming soon for the rest of us?

WOOT! I'm so happy, and I just reactivated my accounts... I guess they got scared of my bluff {:p) lol

JK but seriously... do you guys think they were able to see how many cancellations they had for the month? Anyways, this was a great move. Now I don't feel so bitter about my $80 game. Thank You SE for letting us play through your *crosses fingers* magical update. WOOT!

Not sure if it was just a Monday thing but last night, Rabanastre had about 850 people, where over the weekend, it had over a 1000.

Well they only really had 2 choices at this point.

a.) Not extend the free trial period, have server populations drop off the face of the planet and have several senior management members resign to save face or
b.) Extend the free trial period.

They took the more sensible option.

It was a smart business move. Further evidence that S-E is committed for the long term to making FFXIV a success.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

It's too bad they are not getting all the player feedback. You so much as make a bad comment about a single aspect of FFXIV, or reply to a post with anything < "FFXIV is great!" admins here lock the post.

Admins, you realize that if FFXIV does in fact die, some of you are likely to lose your jobs right? Stop the ridiculous bias. Even SE wants this feedback. We don't care if you like the game.

Nah, I was responding to Mikhalia talking about Thanksgiving, then I realized I was slighly off topic (though I blame Mik for that).

For your amusement I copied and pasted my original post:

KarlHungis wrote:
Thanksgiving has always differed from other harvest festivals in the sense that there is some particular folklore about the pilgrims celebrating and giving thanks to God not just for a good harvest, but for the (short lived) friendship of the native Americans, who taught them to grow and harvest maize, hunt the local wildlife, etc. Hence, the prevalence of "American" dishes such as turkey, potatoes, and pumpkin pie which we normally eat very little of the entire rest of the year.

The natives were of course less thankful for their introduction to the virulent diseases spawned from European livestock farming and the general concept of property rights which led to them being driven from their own land under ridiculous pretenses. Luckily our ancestors taught them how to turn corn into booze, so it all worked out in the end for the people who are still alive.

None of these appear to be valid for your argument. The first one was contributing nothing to the discussion about the game, good or bad, it was merely perpetuating the general pugnacious miasma that has filled the forum in recent weeks. The second one was an accidental lock, as explained by the admin in question in his own thread. The third one was lock on request of the OP himself. Finally, Pikko's plea was perhaps not incredibly politically worded, but it was not an unreasonable one. Wanting people to just tone it down a bit on both sides isn't so unreasonable is it?

While I too am jumping for joy that there seems to be alot of <3 going on and less </3, let me shed some light on why this could also be bad.

People are always going to complain, it's in humanities nature to complain when they don't get their own way or what they want, however, let's look at how this might effect the game in the not say far future.

1. I see alot of people Rank 30+ regardless of wether they are DoM, DoW, DoL or DoH. I haven't seen any mention of end game content or above average level content for these Disciplines. I would say that above average level at this point in the game would be around Rank 20. The next compliant I see is lack of content after people spend another free month ranking even further up then they already have after they find out that the first patch installment will not cater to them, maybe Decembers?.

2. UI changes to clicking required to scroll through menus I see only applying to crafting mostly, so all the clicking that people hate doing atm will still exist in regards to the main menus and having access to inventories and swapping/changing out gear for those who are too lazy to make macros.

3. They are increasing the speed it takes to get to Rank 20 coupled with the ability to gain SP points, doesn't this kind of increase the speed to get to Rank by 200%? Reducing the amount required to get too Rank 20 and increasing SP gains all round.....

4. Quests and Leve's will be adjusted. Define adjusted? It would seem alot of people hate the current Leve system except the Asian's for the most part (and myself with a small minority in the western market also liking it). I read the patch notes as they will ethier do one of two things:
4a. Increase the amount of Leve's one can recieve in the 36 hour cool down period.
4b. Reduce the cool down timer on Leve resets too 18 hours.
This is going to also accelerate peoples leveling curve and only get people into the part of the game, with no cotent, see point number 1.

5. New quests and Leve's added. Quests as in run here kill 10 beetles that do not corelate with Leve's, yes we all agree there needs to be more of those. Leve's however, I see no point in adding new ones, you can only obtain so many every so many hours, so whats the point? Maybe new big boss nasty Leve's? If so awesome, group and raid based content for Linkshells to do, but wait, no solo boss nasties for solo gamers?......You see where I am going with this....

6. All the people who are a high rank now and only progressing every day will only be left out of majority of the content added by the first patch I feel and in doing so, will be forced to reroll a different discipline to experience said content. We all know how much people just hate repairing that high rank gear now don't we....let's also not forget that people will complain having to spend more Gil to repair more items now due to being left out and not getting any content added for them in the patch at thier current rank...

7. WTF!!! I have to buy more retainers????? WTF SE, you SUCK!!! I want me a bag that is a TARDUS!!!!

I could go on but I won't, my point here is that there is still plenty of complaining to follow all this complaining about the current state of the game. They aren't going to make everyone happy, no matter if they even had 20 years to make the game. The state of complaining will just shift. I don't think the game will truely have the content that people are expecting until around March and we all know why.

Show me one game where someone isn't complaining about it in some aspect or another.

Anyone who has an account created between release and November 19th get the extra 30 days, even "canceled" accounts get the time added, so why can't they come back?

They've said that when they get the separate mouse/keybard UI rolled out it will allow drag and drop among other "intuitive" functions

I can't say I'm unhappy about not paying for the next month. I already lessened my FFXIV subscription to 30 days from 6 months. I am surprised, but a good surprised.

One question I still have, and forgive me if I missed it: So does this also mean I'm still stuck with only one retainer until I start paying for the account? I really hope not.

It means you're stuck with only one retainer until SE actually gets additional retainers ingame and working.

This was the right move for SE. Making players pay to see the updates wouldn't have been a smart business decision. They must be banking on these next two updates being pretty significant. I am looking forward to checking them out. Hopefully they are something we can all be excited over. I was very happy reading the last interview when they were talking about the inefficiency of the economy and item drops off of mobs. This +1 +2 +3 business needs to go away.

Thats what I mean, people seem to be all like, YAHHHHHH. Jumping around because there is so much acitvity. /queue Mylie Cyrus song, It's a Party in the USA.

As I said in another post, people don't seem to understand the the fundamentals and foundations of this game are not changing. The changes are not about to bring a complete 180 degree turn in how the game is played, the game will play just like it does now but with less UI lag and maybe some more quests/leve's for you to do with a little touch up on SP gain come the end of Novemeber.

So if you hate the game now, your still going to hate the game come end of Nov, end of Dec, end of Jan, end of feb, end of March.......so on and so on.

Kao can be pretty banhammery on socks, but that's nearly always in situations where the person with the sock is using it to avoid rate downs, nagative backlash, or other consequences on their main, or when they're using the sock to rate with.

I'm not aware of him ever banning a joke sock that was created for a short time just for lulz. I can't claim to know his mind but I don't think he'd go ban crazy over a harmless prank.

Ditto. If I like what I see in Nov/Dec that would make me happy and want to stay, I'll stay.

Perhaps that's why they decided to do another month. They noticed people responding to their list of updates saying how "Promising updates means nothing, we want action" and they decided another month will allow these people to experience SE fulfilling the promises they make.

I have to admit, I was kind of doubtful on SE's truthfulness but now I'm taking back anything I've said in negativity towards them regarding FFXIV. While the free-trial extension is a definite step in the right direction this time, here's what really changed my attitude:

Quote:
We have also added a Topics post detailing a portion of the content heading your way in the two large-scale version updates slated for late November and mid-December. This month's version update, tentatively scheduled for November 25, marks the first step in bringing about significant improvement to FINAL FANTASY XIV, guided in large part by the feedback you, the players, have provided. We are adamant that you should be given the opportunity to experience these changes firsthand before deciding to fully commit to the game. We encourage everyone to view today's post, as well as the previous Topics post from November 11 outlining the development team's roadmap for the coming months. Further details regarding payment options and future version updates will be posted as they become available.

While SE will never state a true formal apology (Most probably wouldn't accept it anyway.) for their folly in how FFXIV's been handled the past months I'm happy they're starting to show they realize now their mistakes. And that they're trying to do what they can to prove they deserve their loyal fans. To me this is a complete turn around from the SE we saw during FFXI's lifetime. If they can keep promise on their words within the next few months then I'll be happy to say they've won my trust once more. Not to sound like a fanboy here but for them to just confess they really screwed up and take the initiative to make right what they've wronged is all I've desired. I've never truly hated SE, some of the games they have made in the past are several of my favorites and I don't think I have ever dedicated as much time to any game before as I have with FFXI over the years. Now if they do make true to their words here and don't allow themselves to slip into the secrecy they're notorious for I shall be a loyal customer for years to come.
