I'm sorry but Gary's comments about in-game tutorial really put me off. I hate hate hate hate in game tutorials, and I think a game reviewer that needs one in order to give the game a fair shot shouldn't be a game reviewer.
That said I was one of those people who didn't touch the story quest (except the first installment of the first one) until I reached rank 20. I don't dig hand-holding.

Couldn't agree more with this.
This reminds me of those tutorial from FF-V and FF-VI where earlier in the game you'll find a building with all those crazy sages or moogles gathering together researching things, and when we talk to them they'll explain the in-game mechanic. I found it very helpful on my first play-through, but after that I'll just skip that building entirely.
I think it's nice and they can even do the same for XIV, would be good to include one of this kind of 'crazy sage association' in each starting city as well and make the very first NPC you encounter (Baderon or Momodi for example) tell you to check it out, but not a requirement to progress through story but optional things to do if you need it...
Also, I believe Gary is not hating the game, I think he just disappointed in what SE has to offer. He is just like many of us who wish to enjoy this game but could not, due to the lack of whatever thing they need to keep them excite, interest and fun.
However, I, myself is more like Kenzie though. Regardless of all those issues this game have, I'm pretty much enjoying the game, and I never run out of things to do. Sometimes even find it difficult to manage time to do all the things I wanted to do in game.
