So question, to all of those that leveled far into the game. Can you actually use that NPC you chose back at level 20 to fight with you? I haven't heard to much about it. I was hoping it would be like the NPC you receive in FFXI. Any ideas or experiences would you like to share. Please mind anyone else that any answer may be a spoiler.

I'm only R33, and my companion has "helped" me in combat for one of the story quests so far.

So far, I think companions are only used for story related quests.

They will probably add "content", allowing you to summon your companion in the field, and fight together. But, I don't see this happening till next year at the earliest.

In the next story quest after ^, instead of just running around, your companion does actually fight for you.

But right now it's only for story quests. You can't summon them out in the field or anything like that.

Darn, I hope they add that. I liked grouping with friends with em to make a large party. was a lot of fun in FFXI. Thanks.

I honestly believe the main point of the adventuring companion is that some of the storyline quest require you to fight. If your main class is DoL or DoH.... wrist flick will only do so much. That companion is present to handle these fights for you. At least until they introduce party battles that are part of storyline.. like in XI.
