I would suggest either pugilist, lancer or marauder. I truthfully don't know which dishes out the most damage because I haven't been in parties to compare who seems to be doing more. On this site go to "Database" then "Abilities" then click a class you might be interested in and check out what they can do. Maybe that will help you decide which class you want to be.

Best damage dealer currently goes to Archer.

Best melee damage would be either Lancer or Pugilist.

I think the damage goes something like this:

Archer >>> Lancer > Pugilist > Marauder > Conjurer = Thaumaturge > Gladiator

I think the way the battle system and action/trait system is setup... it is quite enjoyable regardless of the job you play. I have only played a Marauder so far, and I like what I see. They will be adding tons more monsters on all maps which will make soloing even more fun. My 2 cents anyways.

I would wait until wednesday next week tho :D

Archer is pretty nice and maybe we will get bigger arrow stacks by wednesday's update so it is near perfect. ;)

Agreed with these, though I can't personally vouch for anything regarding Marauder since it's the one job I haven't done.
I don't know if you are more set on doing mad damage, or doing "melee", as you stated. Archer does hella damage though, but you have do be aware of the inventory/economic requirement of playing one as opposed to a true melee.
Also keep in mind, that with the crossover of abilities, you will probably want to work other jobs to at least a small degree anyway, so when you do jump on the game you don't HAVE to just take our word on it. Try out a few jobs, see what suits you that will let you have the most fun, and go with whatever that is.

Class balances are coming down the pipe so you should just play any class for now as it really doesn't matter the first 10 levels.

classes are not really set in ffxiv. You can kinda make your own. wheather ppl are doing this or not is well beyond me. I wanna play to but pc died b4 i could.
On a side note, When i turn on my PC it don;t load past verifying Dmi data pool. or pool data. I can't acess safe mode either. Can this be fixed? this happen when i tried updating my Bios. I think i did something i shouldn't have ~.~ any link where i can post for help will be helpful.

I'm a 24 archer, and I love it. Saying that tho, I leveled Pug so that I could get 2nd wind and absolutely had a blast. If I hadn't chosen archer, I'd definitely be a pugilist.

I am playing as a conj because i wanted a break from DPS/melee jobs.

Being able to heal and nuke all at once has been loads of fun so far.

I do suggest checking all the classes up until level 10 at the very least.

My main is a Pugilist. It is an absolute blast!!! Literally just beating the cr$% out of mobs!!
Talk about a stress reliever, lol!!!!

Keep in mind that you can cross class abilities. So for instance, if you raise Marauder to rank 10, and then start Pugilist, you'll be able to use Marauder abilities while you're a Pug. Think about healing abilities from Conjurer and your brain will start rolling, lol.

And like Tmproff said, the absolute most important advice I can give you is start off raising a Pugilist to rank 6 for Second Wind!! This is an essential must-have for any class you play!!! Being only rank 6, it wont take you long at all to get there.

Pugilist is fun just don't be surprised when the durability of your hand to hand weapon goes down faster then you can blink. Lancer is definitely fun too.
