I think their plan may have been initially to release each hairstyle on each race varying by gender. I noticed many of them were like copies of each hairstyle exclusive to some races/kinds. In fact some of the style options we have now are a fewer than others (I think Lalafell has 4 each per gender?) per race/gender also backing this theory up. For whatever reason they were left in the data and never implemented. SE's done this with an entire area in FFXI and even had considered a train in one point, I recall there was this one area called "Chocobo Forest" or something that had a train station in it. Rumor was those tracks behind the AH in Bastok Markets were supposed to lead it there but they were never actually used... Anyway, as for the hairstyles, we might see the remainder updated with new additions. I think somewhere SE DID mention at one point they want to allow us to change our hairstyles but that hasn't been added in yet from what I can see.

I'm glad you found this and it's really tempting (really, why can't I have a bald roegadyn?) but I'd be afraid of getting banned for fiddling with the files

I'm liking the female Lalafell cuts, nice to look at anyway, thanks.

My knowledge you can't be banned for doing this as you're just swapping around files. Worst case scenario is the game either fails to load, displayed garbled (broken) textures for whatever you changed, or the image appears invivisble. Changes are only shown client-side. Now if you were to go blatantly telling everyone you might get in trouble with a warning but probably all you're gonna get. Dat-modding/music-swapping seems pretty accepted here by the ZAM community. It's only if you do use or are using, something that gives you an unfair advantage (speedhack, teleporthack, botting, to name a few.) I would worry.

It works, the site is overloaded and it is loading horrendously slow though.

Just wanted to post an update.

I got home and tried it... it works! :) I loaded the character in game and everything seemed OK.

Now just keep fingers crossed that I don't get into trouble LOL

Edit: also I think I'll run it past my LS first to be sure they don't consider that a cheat ;)

Hmmm... but will they update with new haircolors?

I want eggplant-purple hair with magenta forelocks (it's how the non-FFXIV incarnation of Ailys Foxglove looks).

It wouldn't be terribly hard to add... I know, it's a vanity thing, and it's more of the "pretty graphics" instead of the ... whatever ... everyone is begging for. But I mean, Alchemists could take stainsand, scale bugs, dyer's moss, lac bugs, and maybe a new ingredient and make X-colored Hair Dye, based on the color of the ingredients. Player uses it and voila, haircolor is changed. They could also have a Natural Hair Dye, which returns the color to it's original shade (using Distilled or Mineral Water or something).

*sigh* I want my purple hair... Miqo'te are lucky.

You're really not supposed to, and I believe it is against the TOS, but there really isn't any way for SE to determine if you have or not.

Well if you're running around with hair not normally available to your race they'd probably figure it out. I've decided to err on the side of caution and leave my toon alone.

Only you'd see them changed. Everyone else sees the hairstyle as normal.

it is against the TOS. Since the files are not yours to toy with. Like the federal law on movies. Those files fall under that. And yes SE does plan on adding more hair styles and a barber shop. Just gotta wait for it. I'm sure after the game irons out it will be added. WoW never had their barber shop @ launch. it was added during wrath. Which is funny because weeks before that i kept sending suggestions to SE to add a barber shop and more hair styles.

Probably won't be long before we end up seeing custom DAT files for different outfits. I'll confess I used some custom DATs on FFXI to turn my modest WHM artifact gear into a pretty dress. They had an alternate version for relic too. Male and female taru were treated the same though, so dress mods on them just looked plain weird when a boy came along.

I personally love the Lalafell styles shown there, but im not really of a mind to DAT swap just yet as I rather like my pigtails. They might, as people have suggested, end up adding in a barber shop or something similar to allow us to change hairstyles and colour on a whim. Until then, I can't wait to see what's in store for us in terms of expanding the character customisation. The system is clearly in place, so who knows what future updates will bring.

Wow! I was wondering why the onion hair style was missing for the Lalafells! I had REALLY wanted my old characters hair. I hope they add a way to change your hair in game with the updates.

Those don't look like "new" hairstyles they're "going to add" to me. They look like hairstyles that are already in the game but functioning on different race models.

If you modded the dats it would be on your screen only. People did it in XI and swapped entire character models and their Moogle to summons and all sorts.

To one thing said above (Not to the quoted poster) I wanna point out even if it IS against ToS chances of you being discovered are pretty slim. I recall back in FFXI somebody even told a GM they were using Windower and they did nothing about it. I'm pretty sure the same about DAT mods. I could be wrong about it, but while SE doesn't actually want you doing this stuff, they aren't going to do much about it when or if you do. At most they may look and tell you you're SOL on getting any technical help. NCSoft has this view with Guild Wars in fact. DAT mods have been around for FFXI for a long time and they're already surfacing for FFXIV. I use one myself in fact for the UI so it's easier to read the chat log.

Anyhow like the quoted says, only you see the mods and same with music ones. The only danger of swapping out mods is unless you do it carefully you can risk ******** up your entire game maybe by making textures invisible or breaking something in the process. Unlike FFXI it's a little harder this time around since there's multiple files and multiple folders within folders and more folders. Overall it's a bigger mess and harder to find what goes where unless you keep tabs.

It's obvious that the character creation was extremely rushed given the paltry selection of hairstyles Lalafells got. Hopefully they follow through on their promise of a hair salon they made a couple months ago.
