Sorry if this is common knowledge or posted somewhere else but I thought it would be useful.
FFXIV uses BitTorrent to do the updates. Unfortunately, the client used by FFXIV sucks and is very slow. To speed it up, use a decent torrent client and "do it yourself". I just downloaded in 20 mins using this method. Your mileage may vary. To do this:
One: Start the FFXIV program and let the update client run. When it starts to actually download the files, you can stop the program.
Two: Go to the file location that FFXIV uses for the torrent data. For me, this is C:\Users\”user”\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\”patch number”\metainfo. Yours may be somewhere else. That's where it is for me on my Windows 7 machine.
One way to quickly find the file is to note the name of the patch torrent in the download client and then use windows search to find it. This one is D2010.11.25.0002.patch.
Three: Run your favourite bit torrent client and open the torrent file you found in the metainfo folder.
Four: When the download is done, move the patch file from the directory used by your torrent application into the correct folder required by FFXIV. This is in the same folder that the metafolder is found. In my case, C:\Users\”user”\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\”patch number”\patch. You will probably already have an incomplete patch in that folder from when you first ran the FFXIV updated. Just overwrite it.
Four: Start the FFXIV application again. This time, it will run the updater, see that you have the patch already downloaded, and install the patch.
