How to torrent the updateFollow

Sorry if this is common knowledge or posted somewhere else but I thought it would be useful.

FFXIV uses BitTorrent to do the updates. Unfortunately, the client used by FFXIV sucks and is very slow. To speed it up, use a decent torrent client and "do it yourself". I just downloaded in 20 mins using this method. Your mileage may vary. To do this:

One: Start the FFXIV program and let the update client run. When it starts to actually download the files, you can stop the program.

Two: Go to the file location that FFXIV uses for the torrent data. For me, this is C:\Users\”user”\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\”patch number”\metainfo. Yours may be somewhere else. That's where it is for me on my Windows 7 machine.

One way to quickly find the file is to note the name of the patch torrent in the download client and then use windows search to find it. This one is D2010.11.25.0002.patch.

Three: Run your favourite bit torrent client and open the torrent file you found in the metainfo folder.

Four: When the download is done, move the patch file from the directory used by your torrent application into the correct folder required by FFXIV. This is in the same folder that the metafolder is found. In my case, C:\Users\”user”\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\”patch number”\patch. You will probably already have an incomplete patch in that folder from when you first ran the FFXIV updated. Just overwrite it.

Four: Start the FFXIV application again. This time, it will run the updater, see that you have the patch already downloaded, and install the patch.

Five: Profit!

Thanks greatly for the reminder. I remember doing this with the original 500mb patch but haven't needed to since. I was staring at a 5day download left after 20 minutes and forgot about this method.

Works great. I'm already at 3% just after typing this. Should be done in just a few minutes ^.^

The link is the torrent file found:

C:\Users\”user”\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV\downloads\ffxiv\”patch number”\metainfo

Then just use uTorrent (www.utorrent.com) to open the torrent file, bingo its downloaded in like 10 minutes (for me).

Then copy the patch file back over as described above. Simple.

Thank you so much for this tip, When I first started the download I thought "I wish I could route this through Utorrent.." low and behold I can! instead of the laughable 100kb/s I was getting I got my standard torrent speed of 1.5mb/s. Downloaded in less time then it took me to make tea, like 4 minutes or something.=D

Thanks so much for posting this!!! And for the person that can't find the file, you might just want to search for the file through the windows search engine. The name of the torrent is same as the patch

documents/mygames/download/ffxiv/48eca647/metainfo/

is where u will find the torrent file, which is D2010.11.25.0002

this will download the patch file, which you then copy into

documents/mygames/download/ffxiv/48eca647/patch/

edit: actually it will download a folder called ffxiv which contains the patch folder. you can just drag and drop the whole folder if u want but im weird.

yeah you need to find the torrent file, which should be in the metainfo folder if you started the download thru SE's client.

I just want to give my thanks for this information..

I started by PORT forwarding to speed up the process of the download, that did not help at all :)

Then i did what you said, and downloaded the patch with 2.5mbs and finised it in 50 seconds :) thanks alot!

Ok ive went over this many times and its not working. I started downloading through SE's Junk downloader (id rather use 4-5 cuss words), stopped it, opened the file with my utorrent, finished the download, and it keeps starting from where it left off. What am I missing here?

I'm not sure I believe you set up port forwarding correctly.

You need to forward UDP/TCP on 55296-55551 to your PC, as well as UDP on 443.

If you do this the patch will download properly and quickly.

Also, I believe it's against SE's ToS to use 'alternative' download methods so be careful what you say on here..

Are you sure you saved the file you downloaded in utorrent to the right spot? you have to go find where you downloaded it to and make sure you put the D2010.11.25.0002.patch file in the documents/mygames/finalfantasyXIV/downloads/ffxiv/48eca647/patch folder. At this point it should replace the file that is currently in there. You then start the game, and it should go to 100% without downloading and then install the patch.
