XIV on PS3Follow

Good evening everyone^^

I'm a first time poster. Name is in the upper-left box. I used to follow ZAM back when I was playing FFXI. I searched the forums for this thread, but was unable to find anything on the subject. I don't currently own a computer that can run the game, just a slow laptop on the fritz. I was wondering if any tech-savvy people could give some helpful insight as to how the game might run on PS3.

I played FFXI on the XBOX 360 for years, and even the PS2 at launch back in like 2001. Never had any real issues outside of serious lag camping HNM's and Besieged. My only worry is that I hear the graphics are pretty nice, which XI didn't quite have and I'm afraid it might affect overall gameplay. They weren't bad on XI, but not stellar either. Again just looking for some sort of ballpark comparison please.

I thought there was no beta for PS3. I even did a search on PSN a while ago and couldnt find anything but a trailer from E3.

OK now I'm kinda mad at myself. I looked online and see that you need the code you get from registering your XIII online, and I just sold back my copy like a month ago and never registered it. Happy day.

There will be a beta for PS3, probably either start in Dec or in Jan. Here is a post for you IckyD from Tanaka.

In this week's Famitsu, Final Fantasy XIV Producer Hiromichi Tanaka and Director Nobuaki Komoto spoke again on the current state of the game, and how they intend to improve it over the coming months.

However, they also finally shed some light on the PlayStation 3 version, which is now "100% complete" and going through adjustments to make it smoother and better for the eventual release.

The main limitations faced on the PS3 are its limited memory and CPU performance when compared with the PC, which can continue to be upgraded by the user. While Tanaka admits there may be some minor differences such as texture resolution, the overall presentation will be almost identical between the two platforms.

Before announcing an official date, the developers will be hard at work bringing the quality of the PS3 as close to the PC as possible given the capabilities of the game system. In addition, they will continue to stamp out all the issues PC players have raised so far, which includes softening the game's steep learning curve. "We're planning to increase the amount of tutorials and beginner quests so players that start with the PS3 version won't have such a hard time," Tanaka stated.

PC users can look forward to a large version update, which will be implemented when the PS3 version goes live. At that point, Komoto says they "aim to deliver a world into which PC players will be eager to invite their new friends."

That article says nothing about the game having beta on PS3.

Betas, memories and Tanaka-sans aside, how do y'all think the actual game will run on PS3? Like I said before I was mildly disappointed with XI on 360 at best. All was well outside of the Fafnir and Behemoth camps, but I have my doubts about this new game.

I don't see any reason why a PS3 would run the game poorly. The graphics might be tuned down a little, but as far as the game running smoothly I think the PS3 will handle it fine.

There was mention of a Ps3 beta from the developers, and I think it would start a couple months before the game comes out. January/February sounds about right if the game is still coming in March.

That's about the best I'm hoping for. I don't exactly have $800+ to drop on a computer to run this. Would hate to miss this game if they fix the problems and it survives.

You're not missing much right now. Hopefully by the time the ps3 release comes out it'll be worth picking up.

I don't know I have a PS3 and I play xiv with all the settings on high on my PC, but xiv doesn't compare graphically to some of the better PS3 games (for instance Uncharted 1 & 2 are waaay better). The way the water stays on Drake till he dries off and the water is visible only as high as he went into the water (for instance to his knees), the way the enviroments look with the lush jungles and trees, the ruined old sites that are falling apart with their details in the stone work of the walls. xiv just doesn't have that at all. The graphics are fine/good, but they aren't groundbreaking by any means.

Maybe running the game on PS3 may be an issue for SE in the sense that they need to optimize it and can't quite get it right, but the graphics of xiv won't be the issue here. If they have to lower the graphic quality to make the game run smoothly on PS3 something is wrong, because like I said there are better games on PS3 graphically that run just fine.

xiv doesn't have any fancy spells or anything. The character models look nice and move nice with emotes, but the detail isn't anything to brag about, there's alot of copy 'n paste in the enviroments, and IMO the details of the world just look bland.

I'll probably get downrated for bashing one of xiv's best qualities (the graphics) but I'm just posting my honest opinion as someone who has played alot of PS3 games and plays xiv on full settings and runs the game great. Didn't some japanese sights only give the game a 7 graphically too? That's not THAT impressive, many PS3 (and 360) games get higher scores than that easily.

Thanks for the post Pink Mermaid. I hadn't thought of it that way. Besides the graphics I'm also concerned about lag and such. Not at first, but once some serious population / endgame stuff gets going. I still plan to be there for PS3 launch though.

Non-MMOs have always had the ability to look better. MMOs need to be available to as many people as possible to succeed. Then there's immersion, if you can't see more than a handful of players around you the world may feel empty... so they have to keep things toned down a bit there as well. So there's no reason you would get rated down, it's just the way things have always been.

Though lately a few MMOs have done some really good things with scaling, EVE is the best at this IMO with 2 separate clients and really good graphics scaling. However the games also kinda easy to render, it's space. Land based MMOs have a much more difficult task.

me personally cant wait for FFXIV be release on ps3. i dislike playing mmo on a pc, sittin at a desk starring at a monitor up close using a mouse for hours just dont work for me. Ive been playing EQOA (Everquest Online Adventures) on the PS2 for years and really enjoy it. If the PS2 can handle EQOA and FFXI the PS3 should be able play FFXIV smootly.

Then sit on a couch? Plug the PC into an HDTV and play that way?

This logic is full of holes, even if you're not counting the fact that the PS2 can barely handle FFXI.

These are the most specific specs I could find for the 320gb PS3

CPU: Cell Processor
PowerPC-base Core @3.2GHz
1 VMX vector unit per core
512KB L2 cache
7 x SPE @3.2GHz
7 x 128b 128 SIMD GPRs
7 x 256KB SRAM for SPE
* 1 of 8 SPEs reserved for redundancy total floating point performance: 218 GFLOPS

GPU: RSX @550MHz
1.8 TFLOPS floating point performance
Full HD (up to 1080p) x 2 channels
Multi-way programmable parallel floating point shader pipelines

Memory:
256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz
System Bandwidth:

Main RAM: 25.6GB/s
VRAM: 22.4GB/s
RSX: 20GB/s (write) + 15GB/s (read)
SB: 2.5GB/s (write) + 2.5GB/s (read)

This is the minimum spec requirements for a PC to run this according to this forum.

OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz / AMD Athlon X2 2.0ghz
Memory: Win XP: 1.5Gb / Win 7: 2.0Gb
Storage: Install: 15GB or more
Download: 6GB or more
Video: GeForce 9600 w/ 512 RAM / ATI HD 2900 512 RAM
Sound: DirectSound compatible sound card (DX9.0c+)
Internet: Broadband Internet connection
Resolution: 1280 x 720 or higher; 32bit
DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
Controls: Mouse, Keyboard, Gamepad

This is all latin to me. From what I can gather the PS3 wouldnt pass the benchmark, but I may be wrong. I need a new computer soon anyway, so what I might do is start on PS3 at release while I get the money saved up for the comp. Then, I'll get it on PC and decide if I wanna use same key or create a new one and dual box.

Tanaka said the game will run just fine, but the textures will take a hit. I'm sure it'll look fine, just not maxed out PC fine.

The ps3 version will run fine it just won't be quite as pretty or crisp looking as pc. Though this is true of any game that's pc and console.

PC has always been able to run games at higher rez, more detailed textures, and longer draw distances then consoles.

Consoles may be close maybe even on par with pc when it first comes out but soon falls behind since they can't be upgraded aside from this gens upgradeable HDs.

Don't worry too much about not having your "beta key" from ffxiii it wasn't a sure entry you still had to be picked to get into the beta.

With the major strides SE is taking to fix the things people have a problem with I'm sure the game will be more than worth getting.
