Olorinus just brought this up in another thread so I thought it may be a good idea to let our crafters list out some items that they need that non-crafters like myself have no idea they need...and tend to NPC the stuff. With the onset up a possible search function...it would be nice to know what to hold on to that has value.

FF XIV Crafting - Needed items

*** Important

CUL
***Effervescent water
Meats
Spices
Veggies
Milk
Eggs
Sun Lemons
***Black Pepper
***Garlean garlic
Spices(esp basil and Laurel)
lettuce
Tomatoes
cabbage
rye
sunset wheat
marjoram(for ether)
Kukuru bean

ALC
Bones
Horns
Wings
***Maple Sap
Sheepskin
Dart Frogs
Sharks
Scale Bugs
Moss
Alumen
Fine Sand
rock salt(used in medicines)
Shriekshrooms (used to make GFA and ether)

WEAV
***Cotton Bolls
Mako Grass
Flax

LEATHER
***Dodo Skins
***Buffalo hides
***Pelts
***Sinew

GOLD, ARM, BLCK
***All ores - leave out copper
Iron Sand
***Nuggets

CARP
***All logs
***Branches

FISHING
***Rat tails
***Midge baskets
***Syrphid baskets

Just a starter list...we can add/adjust to it.

I actually think this is a very good idea. Non-crafters don't have much of a clue as to what crafters need. Instead of just vendoring everything, if we could make a decent list of materials needed, then even less stuff would go to waste.

I haven't done Carpentry or Cooking but as far as the 3 smith disciplines they need next to nothing in terms of mob drops. Weavers like Cotton Bolls, Alchemists like stuff to make glue (bone, horn, scale, wing, etc), and Leatherworkers like skins. Flax is good too.

And of course, crystals/shards.

And there's always yg to look up prices of stuff if you are wondering.

today someone asked me this in my LS, and since i do every craft i gave him a long list

Smithing: Ores
Cooking: Nothing
Weaving: Cotton Bolls
Alchemy: Maple Sap, Sheepskin, Dart Frogs, Sharks, Scale Bugs
Carpentry: Willow, Walnut, Oak Logs
Leather: Dodo skin, Buffalo hides

this list gives the most basic stuff i synth easily, easily as in quick, no brainer synths to level off of
now im sure theres more, but this is the starter list to go off of in my book

I have noticed that a lot of crafters need something from everywhere lol. On our LS site i have a thread deidcated to what we may need and such. Not that anyone is really using it atm but its there lol.

Leather: Pelts, skins, hides, & Sinew mainly.

Alchemy: Moss, Horns, Wings, scale bugs, alumen, Fine sand, well pretty much anything lol.

Weaver: Mako grass, Cotton bolls,& Flax.

Cooking: meats, spices, vegetables, milks, eggs, pretty much anything that you can cook is cooking.

Goldsmith: bones & Ores

Blacksmith: Ores

Armourer: Ores

Those are the ones i am pretty sure about(since those are the ones my man and i have been working on). And of course the shards, crystals and clusters.

As a cook some things I need and are hard to find:

-Sun lemons
-black pepper
-garlean garlic
-spices (esp. basil and laurel)
-lettuce
-tomatoes
-cabbage
-rye
-sunset wheat

CUL/ALC

Effervescent water
(Alc makes it into natron - cooks need natron for any bread

ALC

-majoram (used to make ether)
-maple sap (everyone knows this)
-Rock salt (I know a lot of people vendor this >.> it is needed for medicines - can be bought from the npc for just under 1K but if you are willing to sell it for like 500 gil it would prolly make alcs happy)
-shriekshrooms (used to make GFA and ether)

FSH

-rat tails
-midge baskets
-syrphid baskets

That's my list - most of which was in the other thread

Sheepskin
Dodoskin
Buffaloskin

Carpentry
All Branches and logs

Willow Logs are important for grinding early on

Blacksmithing

Most of the time, we have plenty of Copper ore...stop filling your Bazaars with it
Zinc Ore
Iron sand
silver sand

Rock Salt sold in every city, from a vendor, for 921 gil each
another oen that is easy to find imo and people probly overprice it in bazaars

yeah I did say that - but people are getting next to nothing for them from an NPC - if they sold it for about 500 I know I would buy it. Adding 1K cost to a recipe is pretty sucky.

ADDED TO MY CUL LIST:

Kukuru bean! Used in making chocolates.

Don't worry. It is like Dark Mod (i think it was him) telling me he vendored 70 baskets... I wanted to cry/scream

[edit]

especially cause they vendor for like 1-5 gil each.../sigh

That's just the way the game is. If you don't know what it is or what it's used for, you tend to sell it to make room.

i wasnt aiming at the fact they were rare to find
or that they are easy to vendor
its just that most mats im finding people selling that are also vendora buyable, are sold at higher prices then vendors

Great thread!

I've been NPCing most of my drops because I have no idea what other crafts need. At the same time, as a tanner you really want want people to give you their sinews and hides... ahh...

One of the big problems is not really knowing what something should sell for. I guess I could look up the NPC prices on the wiki, but it seems like such a pain.

Wish linkshells had dropboxes so we could share some of our mats.

For anyone who's interested, I've been using ffxiv.yg.com to find stuff. Granted it's no search function or auction house but until they add the search function this has been a great tool.

Everything that drops can be used for something. The problem is some of it is priced for more than a vendor sells it or is overpriced for the complexity of the recipe.

Just look at recipes if it has only one or two ingredients then a crafter is probably going to try it as a skill up recipe.

For the culinary stuff I don't usually touch it unless it is something I am harvesting or simple.

Great thread. Up until the November patch, all I did was DoM (31THM/22CON). Since changes to group SP, I'm not really enjoying adventuring, so I've been power leveling DoL (mining, botany, and fishing) and I'm currently in the planning phase of power leveling some crafting jobs.

As I'm doing my homework and developing a strategy for my crafting grind in XIV, I'm kicking myself over all of the valuable crafting mats I've vendored over the last couple of months. If only there was some sort of house of auction within the game by which I could look up an item and make a determination regarding that items relevance in the market place based upon supply / demand / price...

I played FFXI for a total of three (3) years. In the early days of XI, I sold a lot of moat carp on the AH. To this day, I don't know what moat carp were used for in XI, nor do I care (I assumed it was cooking?). The AH in XI told me that I should not be vendoring the moat carp. Short of looking up every single item individually on yg, I'm not aware of any other method by which to cross-check whether something is vendor trash or bazaar gold.

Great thread.

Sheepskins and Dodo skins are easily worth 1500~2000g each to anyone leveling leathercraft-- people shout for them all the time. Buffalo Hides are worth 5~10k each easily. All of them should sell fast, and probably instantly if you shout.

Iron Ore and Limonite are worth a bare minimum of 500-600g each, can be sold for around 900g probably, or up to 1200-1500g if you feel like waiting longer.

In XI Moat Carp were used in the quest to get Lu Shang's fishing rod. You need 10k of them ; ;. As far as the cooking side they are used for Sliced Carp, Carp Sushi, & Roast Carp. And also for fishing guild marks. But yea most used them for that quest. In the end at least you made good gil from them :).

The one thing that annoys me as an Armorer is that other crafters don't make/sell the mats I need. (Like for example all the different colored cloths. A lot of crafter could make so much more money if they made those mats and sold some.

Edit: Armorers don't want ores, we want nuggets!

yeah... garlean garlic is in many many many many of the recipes and it costs $2318 from an npc. It makes me cry.

yeah if I was smart I would never even do anything but sand and sugar - but that gets boring!

The latest thing I want to make is pea soup

I got everything for it cheap but the mineral water (which isn't too expensive) and the garlic which costs 2318 gil from the npc...

Olo too bad you aren't on Palmecia. I harvest enough garlic that vampires won't come within a 1000 yalms of me. (I also chuck it and don't even bother vendoring it.) I can't remember what I was looking for when I got so much of it.

RedGalka talk to weavers when they are making stuff if you want different colors. Everyone seems to want black, blur or red. I don't usually make anything else unless someone asks me. I use to make other colors but they were just +1 inventory.

Flax is also used by alchemists.

I would try just using 1 slot and putting a stack up for 700 or 1K each and see what happens. It may sell much faster than you are expecting.

This this... it's fricking hard to find people selling these. Rose-pink canvas, woad blue, etc. if the price is right I regularly buy 10 of these when I see them. Everyone sells undyed canvas now-- it's the colored ones that are scarce.
