its pretty sad everyone's responce is join a linkshell. In XI you weren't forced to join one. I can't think of a single game in which in order to enjoy the content along the community you MUST join a linkshell.
there's simply no content, and a lot of people stopped playing (me included) because doing the same leves over and over just to level up in order to get a full stats bonus from gear I could equip anyway isn't cutting it.
Joining a LS in order to enjoy the game feels more like looking elsewhere to endure together XIV's current state more than anything.
I'm waiting till march to see if SE releases stuff like npc story driven quests and missions in which you actually need to team up.

I see your point about how it feels like you need to take extra steps to make up for an inability to enjoy the game inherently. I don't necessarily disagree, in fact, I'd say that I find myself bored out of my mind when I try to solo.
However, I don't necessarily thing that's a completely negative thing. I'm not saying the game doesn't need more content; it does. But if you don't need to join a linkshell, then what's the point of FFXIV being an online game at all? If the game is going to be an online game, it should require you to play with and talk with other people.
This isn't directed at you specifically, since you never made this point, but if someone is drastically against the concept of joining a linkshell, perhaps they should be playing single player games instead.
Again, the game still needs more content, and community is not an acceptable substitute for content, but the community part should still be an integral part of the game.
