I cant speak for other servers but since the Novemember Patch ive seen a huge chunk of the few remaining players completely disappear.

And yesterday + today especially (presumably coinciding with the WoW expansion launch) it seems that absolutely is just completely empty, and the only time you actually see players is afk ones in towns with their bazaars.

I REALLY want to keep playing this game but SE is making it so hard. Theres literally absolutely nothing to do anymore except constantly grind lowbie mobs for countless hours at end, or just spam crafting/gathering non stop.

Like others ill likely keep my account active till the discount period ends in March, but with the direction of this game its hard not to wonder why even bother.

lol guess I contradicted myself.

I figured ill try to keep my account active till March purely because of the discount period (ie the free/discounted months) to see if anything changes.

But its so hard to find a reason to play.

In the last week my LS went from having an average of 30-40 people on at a time, to 5-7 tops.

The problem is this game just doesnt offer anything to do.

Thats the free period.

I believe after that the discount period charging 7.95 instead of 12.95 goes into effect until March. It was on lodestone recently.

Doesn't seem anymore dead to me but then again I'm in a great LS and doing exactly this:

We are getting very organized and have good **** going on for us.

That's the discount period for FFXI though, we still have to pay full price for XIV.

One of my LSes just broke 100 active players today... and that's no small feat. Not as many left for cata on launch, most left before it to prepare it seems, so the ones left are FFXIV fans and hopefuls of better content.

nope...game is definitely not dead...if anything from the November patch more people have started playing. The battlecraft, spellcraft, and fieldcraft wards in the market wards are always so packed with retainers I can't even put mine in there! And I'm selling stuff for the battlecraft ward!

I've seen enough moving people around that I don't think it's dead. The December update should help a little, but I think we won't see a huge increase until companies, the PS3 players, and the early 2011 update(which I think means March) gets put into place.

No, but really I don't see a difference since early last month on Wutai. It is a bit hard to tell now since SE REMOVED the player count!! ...Hmm, I wonder why they did that?? False securities towards a "healthy" game? Lol.

Safe Travels and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!(I don't know SE removed my clock as well)

The game shipped 630,000 copies and all have been sold + the other million new copies that were made/shipped have sold. The servers are overflowing with people and will likely need several new servers soon. The game is alive and well and full of rich deep immersive content. The game isn't dead but you make it sound like it went platinum...I doubt the game sold almost 2 million copies...but to be honest I've seen an increase in players since the November patch on Gyshal even in the lower level camp (since I am low level) - hope the December patch wows everyone so we can start a good vibe rolling here and get a crapload of people to join us.

Great so this game's content revolves around talking to people on ventrilo. Sounds like a lack of content to me. Having a group of people to talk to online does not equal content in a game itself.

Not on Rab server at least. There are always lots of people around the low/mid-rank camps and in cities when I am playing. 10 minutes before behest time there are already people asking for invites. If you arrive even 3 minutes past the hour you might not even get a spot in the party! And 2 out my 3 linkshells are always pretty active, even though they are in completely different time zones.

Of course, I can't speak for the OP's server. However, given that the December patch is coming soon, maybe it might give OP's server a population boost? I for one are excited about the NMs, even though I am not even half way close to the supposed rank required.

Alive and well, but the people who were playing it as "something to do until cataclysm" have gone back to their respective cesspools. If anything, its great to be able to play and not see constant complaining about the game.

Now if only I had more of a reason to login besides leveling...well that should be fixed in the big storyline update.

Other than the confirmed 640,000 copies shipped at release, where are you getting your numbers from? I'd be curious to see if SE has released the total number of subscriptions. Also, are these still release date numbers? Do we have any indication of total number of subscriptions after the Nov. update?

I think the total number of subscriptions would be a little skewed since we are still in the middle of the free trial and like myself several people have probably not canceled yet out of lazyness or curiousity about the december patch. Also like me these people probably dont really log in very much either if ever. Our best measuring stick was the realm population tool which SE figured out is a very telling guage of the games preformance and unfortunately they came to the conclusion that they dont want us to see how well or how poorly the game is doing. Best we can do at this point is speculate I guess.

But isn't realm population also a flawed measuring tool? It's known to fluctuate by time of day, day of the week, and time of the year. To take an instant snapshot of the game's population and equate that to the health of the game is much worse than using the number of active subscriptions, even during a trial period.

its pretty sad everyone's responce is join a linkshell. In XI you weren't forced to join one. I can't think of a single game in which in order to enjoy the content along the community you MUST join a linkshell.

there's simply no content, and a lot of people stopped playing (me included) because doing the same leves over and over just to level up in order to get a full stats bonus from gear I could equip anyway isn't cutting it.

Joining a LS in order to enjoy the game feels more like looking elsewhere to endure together XIV's current state more than anything.

I'm waiting till march to see if SE releases stuff like npc story driven quests and missions in which you actually need to team up.

But it is true that at the moment there isn't much of a variety of things to do, but it won't be like that forever. After the fixes they can focus on the huge content that I'm sure they have planned for us.

I see your point about how it feels like you need to take extra steps to make up for an inability to enjoy the game inherently. I don't necessarily disagree, in fact, I'd say that I find myself bored out of my mind when I try to solo.

However, I don't necessarily thing that's a completely negative thing. I'm not saying the game doesn't need more content; it does. But if you don't need to join a linkshell, then what's the point of FFXIV being an online game at all? If the game is going to be an online game, it should require you to play with and talk with other people.

This isn't directed at you specifically, since you never made this point, but if someone is drastically against the concept of joining a linkshell, perhaps they should be playing single player games instead.

Again, the game still needs more content, and community is not an acceptable substitute for content, but the community part should still be an integral part of the game.

Exactly, all this join a LS to experience the game doesn't mean the game has content. Sure you can shoot the **** with your ls and laugh it up about things but it doesn't mean FFXIV has content. I have a group of friends who've been playing online games with each other for awhile now. We've played various games such as EQ, FFXI, WOW, DOTA, Source, and COD. We are on vent and it makes playing games more fun but in the end if a game isn't good we can't play it. All of us got the CE and all of us have stopped playing to play Cata because the game simply isn't exciting. Sure WOW is getting old but in my mind its more playable at this point and we are just waiting for games to pass us over til Diablo 3 and DOTA 2 comes out.

Of course it has its flaws, but if you consistently get around 1000 (or less) active players... well, you can conclude that the game has a lower population than a 7-year-old FFXI. A truly "healthful" MMO -- at least, one the size of FFXIV -- shouldn't be dropping below 2000 except during special circumstances.

But, as has been said, SE judiciously removed any tools to measure the population, because as long as you don't look at the wound, it doesn't exist! :D

I always saw that as a huge problem with the game too. So often I'd see people saying things like

"can't find the weapon you want, have your LS crafter do it"
"Nobody doing repairs, just have someone in your LS do it"
"it sucks the party finder is hard to use, but I just group with my LS"

all 3 of which basically saying the game's infrastructure and mechanics are so crappy, that you're screwed without having friends to help you.

XI's dedicated following consisted of about 10k active subscribers on each server on average - when did this game get anywhere near that? I would love for this game to reach that plateau but geez its slow coming out the gates.

pretty much. I know I finally quit, not after seein my server @ 600 ppl during primetime but after realizing that of the 10-15 people that are my level that I can actually play with daily.... only one of them is of the endgame or strategic mmo-play mindset hence all there is left to do is level to 50 again, or quit. I chose the latter.

Not that there is end game mind you, but when there is...forcing myself to die repetively due to people being absolutely certain that the way to play FFXIV is to stand in a big pile in front of the mob (or whichever direction their ae is) take as much damage as possible, and spam ae heal) lol. You woulda thunk this was everyones first MMO.

its pretty sad everyone's responce is join a linkshell.

Irony: Don't most of the "FFXI was great" crowd (of which I am one) insist that one of the best features of FFXI was how the game forcing you to group up and join a linkshell lead to a greater community experience and therefore an overall better game experience? Many people, myself included, have said that one of the things they loved about FFXI was how it forced you to work with others because there was very little you could accomplish on your own past level 10 or so.

Now FFXIV has taken the idea of needing other people to party with and extended it to needing other people to accomplish ANYTHING AT ALL (including repairs and buying/selling).

Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

Just a small out of game reminder, many students aren't going to be on much from now until about the 20th because it is finals season. Assuming many of the students playing the game care about their grades.

That's very true. Many of my LS mates as well as myself have all been busy with finals this week. I've only logged on a few times in the last several days because of that. Actually, I have my math finals in about an hour...I should go. >.>;
