Lower price at GamestopFollow

#1 Dec 08 2010 at 5:50 PM Rating: Good
Just went by Gamestop today, saw that XIV is now going for 29.99$. Not a bad price if you're planning to get into it. I'm sure it'll drop some more over the next couple months, but still not too shabby. This of course is for the standard edition.

Was it in the "bargain bin"?

Nah, was up along with the rest of the new releases. I'm not THAT surprised to be honest, most PC game prices seem to plummet at a faster rate then their console counter-parts.

Nah, I'll wait until it's free-to-play in February.

(Oh shi-- Did he just say that!?)

{Nah, I'm joking; I hope.}

Just to reply constructively (is that the right word?) to this comment I wanna say even if it were to ever go free-to-play I'd likely see SE doing the same method as NCSoft did with Guild Wars being you buy the game and can play for free on their servers. They might reduce it to 1 character with the option to buy permanent slots for additional ones for a certain fee. However at this point I still see anything like that being unlikely to ever happen.

(Yes I know it was a joke, just wanted to comment on what SE might choose to do if they were to ever make this game into a free-to-play service.)

This just in- most games (even mmorpgs) have steep price decreases shortly after the first week, especially from online stores.
Really, the only games I have yet to see decrease in price are Star Ocean: the Last Hope international (PS3) and Trinity Universe (PS3). Might eventually cave in to the latter since its only 30 or 35..but the former is still 45 used at the lowest...

There's also the little thing that SE has 2 MMOs, one of which is 1 game+ 4 expansions+ 3 mini addons +I forget what else for 20 or 30 dollars, the other which is 1 new game for what used to be 40 or 50 MSRP.
If I was in charge of setting the MSRP at marketing, I would certainly have done the same thing in their position, especially since FFXIV is getting a lot of flak for trying to break the mold.

Edit..oddly enough, I checked prices on Star ocean TLH: International hoping for a decrease today, and my prays were answered! Its down to 30 on Amazon ^^ And it just dropped even lower (20 new) on gamestop! Holy Christmas specials, batman!
I've got to go...can't pass this up <.<

There's also the fact that most MMOs offer a free trial download with the option to upgrade to full service, essentially offering the box for free. Box prices for MMOs are just to get quick profit on release dates. Afterwards the monthly fee is much more profitable and in the long run offering the box for free will attract more customers. A dropping box price has nothing to do with the health of the game.

You guys go ahead and keep telling yourself FFXIV is fine.

Whatever you need to do to make you feel justified in spending $75 on a CE plus whatever PC upgrades you decided to do just for this failed game.

This just in. the 2 of you are full of crap. First off yes most pc games do drop in price but not this fast. Most games get 5 months at least befor they have such a drastic price drop. you will see a sale or 2 mostly from online stores like amazon. But a $20 or more price drop acrost the bord is rare. Second name one mmo where you do not need to ither go buy the box or pay the same price as the box to upgrade from the free trial. FFXIV is the first time I have seen a free trial turn out to be a free copy of the game. I hear FFXI did the same but I never saw it so I can not coment on that.

Most of the time a dropping box price dose not have anything to do with the health of the game. But in this case It dose and everyone of you know it.

Why even bother posting? If you don't like it, don't ******* play. We don't need to hear your 2 cents, especially when its abundantly clear you didn't even read the **** thread. Go troll somewhere else.

LoTRO, EQ2, and EVE, all of which I did (play free trial, then upgrade to full version by paying nothing but the subscription fee).

IIRC, WoW also. Free trial gets you the game, then you have to pay for expansions, but that's common sense.

What kinda peeves me is that the PC price has dropped but the PS3 price will still be 60 upon release. I get that it's for the different system, but it's the same game. Why is PS3 version worth more? I'm getting the PS3 version since I can't play the PC one in my current situation... So does anyone else think it's kind of unfair to have the price different for different systems? Especially considering PC version got so much free trial time for joining early, which I know PS3 won't get, though I'm okay with that considering PC players who joined that early have had to put up with so much BS.

I'm just saying. Not fair for players to be able to buy the game NOW and pay less than players who buy the game in 3 months just because they use a different system. Thoughts?

EQ2 you must buy the box or pay 29.99 at the time that I did it to upgrade from the free trial. LoTRO was the same untill it went free to play. EVE IDK never used the free trial.

WoW you still need to buy the box set to upgrade from the free trial. Just teasted this and its still the same they ask for the CD key from a box set or offer to sell you one online.

Exactly. At one point all MMOs require you to pay the box fee. But eventually the boxes become free because they realize attracting more players with the word "FREE" is more profitable than charging a box fee. This is all standard procedure for an MMO.

Ah thanks for the correction. I honestly couldn't remember because I ended up just buying all the expansions in that box set and it came with the initial version. FYI, LOTRO was always free. I never bought the game and never payed to get it after the free trial, and I played before it went F2P.
