Gaming Peripherals that work best with FFXIVFollow

This is my user review of what worked and what didn't work well with FFXIV.

I bought the Logitech Wireless Backlit Keyboard. It is awesome. Bought it months ago and it hasn't needed to be re-charged even once yet.

It has a motion sensor that lights up the keys before you even begin typing. And it clearly turns the keyboard off completely when there is no input to conserve battery life.

Best $99 purchase for a PC peripheral.

The Logitech Wireless Rumblepad 2 controller is also superior to the wireless 360 controller. The 360 wireless controller turns itself off when not in use for a bit and then requires you to log out of FFXIV before the game will recognize it again. The Logitech Controller does not have this problem. I can AFK for an hour and then pick it up and start playing.

Furthermore, you cannot set a dead zone for 360 controllers, even the wired kind, which results in your character running off in a random direction at times. After returning 2 of the 360 controllers to find one that did not have lose thumbsticks, I finally returned the third for a full refund and followed the advice of other posters here - purchase the Logitect Wireless Rumblepad 2. Very pleased to find that the Logitech controller is pin-point accurate.

These are my two favorite wireless peripherals for use with FFXIV. I hope others find this useful.

I play alot of FPS and lengthy TBS matches so I've never been keen on wireless hardware. However the Logitch wireless headset is leagues above any headset I've ever owned including my Sound Blaster Arena Surrounds.

I have the first gen wired Logitch Rumblepad, but they've got a new heaftier version out (it's got the clear covered colored buttons) that feels extremely nice. I'm gonna have to get one I think.

Finally I would assume any keyboard with macros is nice, but I can't purchase a keyboard without an LCD screen since owning a G15 and now a G19. The G510 or whatever looks exceptionally nice even if it doesn't have a full color LCD screen. The macros are very handy for more than just games. Though I find myself using my G-Keys for communication rather than making communication macros in various games. The LCDs are fantastic for Teamspeak or Ventrillo as well as checking email or whatever while in fullscreen mode on certain non-alt-tabable games.

Yeah I've kinda become a hardcore Logitech fan.

I recently picked up a sidewinder x4 keyboard from newegg for 30 bucks, and the programmable macros make ffxiv 100x more enjoyable.

Crafting is now a two button process for me. One button does the ingredient selections, and the 2nd button spams through standard synthesis. Makes a ton of difference, especially if you're not a fan of clunky menus. XD

Even exping is better, as i can program a series of standard attacks. I no longer have to baby sit the stamina bar.

Do you mean the Logitech G930 7.1 Channel Wireless Headset?

I bought one of these and it is fairly nice. The sound is superb, truly surround sound. Footsteps are heard from the correct direction. Also very good at external sound dampening.

I returned them for the following reasons: One, the battery life is much lower than advertised. I averaged about 3 hours, never more than 5. (BTW, After an hour your ears get sweaty.)

Two, you have to go into the Audio Devices tab and switch the headset to your default device. This requires logging out of FFXIV if you are playing in full screen mode. The idea was to switch to the headset when my wife went to sleep so I would not bother her, but logging out was not very convenient.

Logout > change default audio devices > sweaty ears > battery runs out > plug-in to USB > Why did I buy this?

Bah, I'd rather just turn the sound down and get my $169.99 back.

@PerrinofSylph, thanks for the tip on the keyboard with the LCD screen. Sounds great. Do you mean to say that you can use it as a second monitor?

I would say the most important peripheral for me is a comfortable and ergonommic chair haha. Years of sitting in a terrible chair playing ffxi has really taken a toll on my back. Finding a good chair can easily cost upwards of $300+ but I find that it is a worthwhile investment, considering how many hours I spend in front of my computer.

If you're looking for a great controller to play FFXIV with, you can't go wrong with this:

http://www.amazon.com/PS2-USB-Dual-Controller-Adapter-Converter/dp/B000F6BGXY

http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-2-Dualshock-Controller-Black/dp/B00004YRQ9/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1291931606&sr=1-1

Hook these up, use FFXIV Config to map your buttons and you're good to go.

Yes on the headset, but I only use it for FPS. I have the Creative pair for longterm gaming. The Logitech ones have the most amazing surround I've ever heard in a headset even my older Bose set I used to use when flying.

As to the G19, yes you can use it as a second monitor. The G15 and other keyboard that have the 2 tone LCD can be used for IMs and stuff, but not as effecient at email or other things. Not that you'd want to, but I have a macro to browse youtube videos on my G19... it's pointless for that, but still a cool :hey look what I can do". The no BS best functions are the Teamspeak related ones, and you can do that with any logitech with an LCD... I just really really like the full color one on the G19.

*EDIT* This is a painful vid to watch, but it shows the youtube bits... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmLxjtSD09s&feature=related

Given that this keyboard seems to be like a newer model of the current illuminated keyboard out there, I'd wait before buying this. I currently have the illuminated keyboard and it's quite an awesome keyboard with only 1 problem. Phantom key binding. It does exist on the keyboard and if you play FPS like I do, don't expect to run and jump at the same (W + Shift + Space). You have to get used to running, letting go of shift, then jumping. If you just play ffxiv though, go nuts.
