I started playing FFXI again and started a new character. As I was geting each class to lvl 10 I got to thinking about the generic feel of each class. None of them feel fleshed out. None of them are really all that exciting to play. Then I got to thinking. What if this is all part of SE plan? What if they want us to be some what bord with the classes? And if they do why? Could it be that they have a plan for some truly epic classes? Classes that we will need to work our butts off to get? And in order for us to want to do this could it be part of there plan to keep the classes we have now somewhat bland and generic? Lets take a look at 2 class and brake them down a bit.

First the Conjurer. What is it? it some what feels like a Black mage with all of its DD spells. Fier,Lighting,Ice and Air. Then It kinda feels like a healer. With its cure spells and buffs. It never really feels like the Conjurer is really all that good at just one thing. If you try to go all DD spells it feels somewhat lacking. Same if you try and go all cure/buff. if you mix and match it feels a bit better but still is lacking that magic. So what do we have here? A bit of a whitemage mixed with a bit of a Blackmage.

So what if some time down the rode you can chose to focuse on one thing? Lets say you chose to focuse on DD spells and become a Blackmage. Now your an epic DD caster puting out huge dmg but can no longer cast cures/buff spells. Or you go the other rode and focuse on all Cure/buff spells. You become a Whitemage and can heal like no other with buffs that could turn evon the lowest lvl player into a god.

What about the Gladiator? He is a really good tank. But having played on to lvl 43 I got to say it did feel a bit lacking. Sure I was a good tank but it realy was not that exciting. Taunt/Phalanx/provoke over and over and over. My dmg was good but nothing to call home about. I could take DMG like a pro but then again so can the Mur and Pug to a point. So what could the GLadiator turn into?

Well the first thing that comes to mind is a PLD! All the soden you have all your tanking skills mixed with healing skills. You can blind the target bash them with your shield then cast a heal on your self all befor the mob gets an attack off on you. Or maby the Gladiator can drop his shield and pick up a 2 handed sword and become a DPS god. Tossing out tuns big hits with his 2 handed sword and casting Black magic taking the mods hp from 100 to 0 in no time flat!

Ya I know this sounds a lot like the FFXI system. And it could be said that you could make just about any class you want with the mixing and maching of skills. I am just thinking maby SE has something big planed for us down the road when it comes to classes. We already know that there are other classes that we can't play ATM. but maby theres something to that. Maby its something we can't play untill we LVL the generic classes. And maby part of there plan is by lvling the generic classes and mixing/matching there skills we will have a better feel for what epic class we would want to play.

Sorry that this went on as long as it did. What do you think? Could there be a plan behind the classes beyond what we already know? could the mixing and matching of skills from the classes now be geting us ready for something epic?

I am conflicted: the more I play around with this "mix-and-match" style of abilities and classes, the less fun I have... I suppose that, while such customisation sounded great at first, all I really wanted was an interesting take on generally well-defined archetypes.

Some abilities will always be better than others, so this customisation -- like subjobs, skill trees, armour sets, or anything else -- eventually results in only a few select builds in just the same way. As it is now, however, we don't even have select builds, just a blurry cluster of vaguely-similar classes: a few tank/DD, a couple nuke/healers, a huge group of "crafting classes" that may as well not be classes at all, and three harvesters that are essentially the same aside from their respective nodes.

But, all I can do is wait and see how everything shapes up~

Well...yes. I believe that is the great part of the system. As you pointed out, at the start of XI most classes are kinda boring and can't do much (THF takes the crown for this. You have to wait till lv.14 to get sneak attack!) And like any game, the more you level the more abilities and the more possibilities.

The more you rank up as multiple classes in XIV the more abilities at your disposal and the more things you can really do. And with stats being customizable and gear being customizable you can be as focused (or un-focused) as you want to be.

As you said with Conjurer. What is it? Well one person might put all there stats into fire elements, have gear for fire, and use fire based spells exclusively becoming a 'Fire Conjurer'= very focused. Another person might take healing and buff spells from Conjurer and other classes to better fill out being a healer. As you can see Conjurer can be what you want it to be (unless you want to use a sword)

On that same note, Conjurer gets a trait 'one with nature' that allows all other classes to use Coj abilities more effectively. And that is ALL classes. So you want to make a spell casting Botanist? you can do it! might not be great...but its possible!

So really, epic is what you want to make of it. New classes will just add to the general epic-ness you can achieve by trying out new things.

This comment highlights the fact that the system does not really allow ideal limitless customization. If unique combinations are just as ineffective as in FFXI (MNK/WHM, for example), then the system really just allows for tons of ineffective/stupid mixtures and for a few to come out far on top.

Ideal customization would allow me to be a spell-slinging botanist and actually accomplish things that way.
