And Dissidia... I can't think of a game even remotely similar to it.

Me neither. It was quite simple for a fighting game, but it wasn't meant to be some serious competitor to Tekken anyway.
We really want to compete against World of Warcraft and for example the new Star Wars MMO.

What impressive games besides FFXII has SE Delivered in the last 10 years ?

Pretty much everytime they touch the PSP platform something great pops out.

Dissidia (and soon Duodecim)
KH: Birth by Sleep
Crisis Core: FFVII
(soon) Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

Other platforms..

As already said Kingdom Hearts I and II, which were pretty **** good no matter what the haters say.
And seriously, no matter what the fanboys says FFXII was polished, fun, and impressive. Only thing pulling it down where the rabid fans.
And my personal favorite, The Last Remnant (which wasn't neither a critical or commercial success, but still a great, innovating game, just what I would expect from the 2000's SE).

Just to add: FFXII's writing was excellent (in terms of translation and proper English) and the acting was very well done too, especially Fran and Balthier.

The pacing was good too; running around as an errand boy then getting caught up in Empire and intrigue. Battle was fun especially the gambit system albeit a bit convoluted.

Was it the best FF, no way, but it was light years ahead of XIII in most if not all aspects. It made me wonder how they thought XIII's dialog and acting could pass, when XII's was so much better.

But given the transgressions of not learning completely from FFXI, I guess it shouldn't really be surprising.

The only fighting game I've ever been very serious about was SSB (which some would argue isn't a true fighting game)... that said, I don't think the game was particularly easy, even if it was simple. It was accessible in that it didn't require a bunch of crazy button combos, for sure.

What I loved was the way you could customize your character at a level that I've never seen in another fighting game, and each character really did fill a unique playstyle niche.

Never confuse your inference as the listener for an implication of the speaker.

Good games are subjective like good food is subjective. You're not going to seriously tell me that there's not a psychological basis for why pizza is great and lutefisk is revolting. The thing about subjectivity is that, as subjects go, humans actually have a great deal in common.

I will join you as far as the pessimism and disillusion. I had canceled my subscription, like many of the rats that had left the sinking FFXIV. When I saw that the Dev team was being reworked, a spark of hope made me reactivate the "service". I don't know Naoki Yoshida, I hope he will do a good job.

I am joining in the crowd "what were they thinking?". Hopefully thinking straighter now.. Want to make money? Give us a good product we will want to pay for, don't serve me mushy oat meal and call it chocolate cake, it's insulting.
