Dec Update - What search function will we get?Follow

SE have effectively announced that we will get very simple market ward search capabilities in December with more to follow in subsequent version updates. What do you think we'll get first?

Here's my guess. Enter any specific ward. Open your inventory and select an item. You will be able to see if that item is for sale somewhere in the ward that you're standing in. If you're lucky, they may tell you who has the item for sale.

My reason for this is that this is effectively the same way they implemented the bazaar (in more ways than one) "buy" function. They have no way for you to specify an item unless you have it in your inventory.

I'm guessing worse. I think we'll only be able to search using items in our inventory and only the visible retainers... Not the entire ward... But maybe i'm just being overly pessimistic...

One of their previous articles mentioned a search function where you look up a particular item, and if it's in the ward they would tell you who has it and put a marker over their name so you could find their retainer. If they haven't changed their minds I'd assume something along those lines.

Im guessing we will see something really simple, such as

"search tells you who has what item in what ward"
but nothing more

Yeah, I think it will be exactly this. I'm OK with just that to be honest.

If it gives us the person and what ward they are in, i'll be ok with that too.

Hopefully it's something you can do while not right outside the wards, or inside one of the wards. As in, do searches for an item while you're anywhere in the world. Something connected to the NPC linkpearls perhaps?

That way i can check on what items are available where, without having to travel to each city individual to see if one item is up for sale.

Well this is exactly what we want, isn't it? IMO they NEED to make it so we can search by category, NOT (only) by item name or something like that - I want to be able to search for "Helmet > Optimal Rank: 5 > etc.".

as much as I'd like one, I think some people would go berserk if they actually put in a browse system.

That's a great idea. In this game I rarely know the name of the gear I'm looking for.

In their initial report they mentioned the inclusion of an icon that will be displayed next to the retainers name to make them more easily visible (perhaps a change of name colour would be on the cards too?) when doing a search.

My only major worry is that we'll only be able to look for items we already own, defeating the purpose of a search function almost entirely.

its what realistic people want

everyone else wants something that will bring the retainer to them, or that will tell them who has it, the ward, the exact location in that ward, and how much they sell it for

I cant wait for retainers. I havent been playing much due to the fact i have stuffed 4 Characters and their retainers full of items.

So once retainers come out. and the games still free. im gonna get the maximum number of retainers on 1 or two characters and stuff all my items onto that 1 or 2 characters. btw the char in my sig is actually my alt =P well, one of them....

then when they announce that the game wont be free anymore ill do my best to empty and cancel as many retainers as possible

Exactly.

SE needs to realize that in the long run, the only system players will be satisfied with is an auction house. Period. They can keep piling additional functionality like browse/search onto the market wards until they have a de facto auction house, or they can just impliment an auction house direclty a la FFXI.

In any other system players will end up wasting time unnecessarily, and with all the other mmo options on the horizon, I doubt this is something that everyone will be willing to put up with.

The longer SE tries to justify the current system with semi-coherent references to crafter profits, deflation, or RMT market control, the more players they risk losing indefinitely.

I kind of having the thought that SE will probably implement another option for your retainer such as "Look for item" and you're going to have to choose from your inventory of what item you're looking for and put a mark on every retainers having that particular item.

And if it takes them half a year to build up an AH feature, would you be fine with the marketplace as is for the time being? I sure as **** would like some hotfixes to ease the problems, but maybe that is just me.

It will be simple, great, easy to use and do what its meant to do. Will still not be good enough for some players because it is not an Auction House.

You think an entire game takes about 2-3 years to build (in general) and an auction house will take 1/6th that amount? they don't have monkey's working for them; I bet if they wanted to put an AH in the game it wouldn't take longer than a month to implement. Anyway, this said, I think the wards can work with a search feature (detailed above in my other post) with the slight inconvenience of you having to walk to the retainer, which I think would be OK as long as they don't show prices of items I guess...that is what they're after isn't it? I honestly have no idea how supply and demand will work in this game - I mean does SE not realize that even if they don't show "price history" for example, players will find other ways to determine the "going price" such as YG, such as FFXIAH (and now FFXIV-AH) etc.

Honestly, they should just cave and give us an AH, but I do like one thing though..******* they come they go...saturday through sunday, monday, monday through sunday yo, maybe i'll love u one day, maybe we'll some day grow, 'til then just sit your drunk *** in the funky *** marketplace yo. (uuhhhmmmm seriously though, I like the fact that people can put stuff up for repairs and seek certain items to buy through their retainers, If they do implement an AH they better somehow keep this functionality if in turn they get rid of the wards).

Yes, but it is not like everyone stops doing their job once they start working on the AH. Features are built simultaneously, not one after another.

If everyone stopped doing whatever the **** it is they are doing to work on the AH, obviously they could get it done much sooner. But is the game in such a good condition that they can afford doing that?

Yea you're right, if there was about 10 people on the entire team of FFXIV they probably couldn't all afford to shift priorities but I'd imagine there's more than enough people to grab about 10 of them and tell them, "hey, d-bags, you guys are making an AH now and we want it done right away." Plus, considering they have experience in the field I'd imagine these 10 people are gonna be bored during that month. I dunno, I don't think it'd take anywhere near as long as 6 months. BUT point taken, I agree with you in that if it does take a long time to implement an AH I would much rather a more user friendly Market Wards in the mean time.

I'm kinda hoping that the market wards becomes relatively functional in this update, and through the year they'll improve the system until it reaches that "flea market" feel they were striving for. Ofcourse, it has to work somewhat adequately first....

I think a search funtion kust loike the AH in FFXI would be perfect but with a couple changes.

Search Funtion is activated by interacting with a black board on each ward.
Search is restricted to the items associated to that ward.

This way we wouldnt even be able to search/find an Ore on Battleward. Hopefully this way people will learn to use the wards properlly.
