Have I missed something? Or did SE miss something?
I have been looking for a way to safely transfer items between alts.
I have come up empty.
How do you transfer between alts?

There is currently no way to do it other than a trustworthy friend. :(

In a somewhat misguided attempt to limit the extent of RMT in the game, SE have not implemented any way to transfer items within an account (yet). For me, this actually led me to stop playing for a while due to storage issues but with the new retainer I can have since the recent update, I am back in the game again!

If you purchased the collector's edition of the game, break out that buddy pass and register a new account. Install the game on another computer, enable tetris graphics (i am assuming that people don't have xiv-capable computers sitting around, unused), and trade away!

There is a way to do it, it's just somewhat time consuming and annoying.

Put up something on one characters retainer for whatever price. I usually try to use the appropriate ward to limit the amount of gil I lose in said transaction. Log on other character and purchase said item.

If you're feeling adventurous you can list the item for 1 gil, but I usually don't since someone can happen along and buy out your inventory as you're logging in.

Can trasnfer gil the same way, just list an ingot or hide for 200,000 gil or something.

I take it from this, that SE has made it impossible to run 2 copies of FF XIV, using 2 different accounts, without using special programs?
