Will there be a guide in the future?Follow

When I first started ffxi near its release, i bought the brady game strategy guide. While I understand that these mmo's are constantly updated, and that the guide was useless and outdated after a couple years into its making, I really enjoyed the aspect of reading about classes/equipment/maps/monsters/quests/etc. Especially to the newcomers of the game, I feel as if it helps more people understand/learn the game when they start, rather than ragequit and hate the game because they cannot figure out the UI and aren't familiar with the online ff games.

My question is if anyone knows whether or not there is talk about making a guide that will be sold in retail. I am going to play the game regardless, i love both online final fantasies and am a huge fan. I was just curious if anyone knew. I understand that there are many sites, including this one for help on quests and whatnot, but just think a strategy guide would attract more people, and keep those consumers in the game, as opposed to leaving from frustration.

Just my two cents. Curious what everyone else thinks.

There were actually two.

They were dated so as new content came out they added them to the updated guide.

I also knew going in that it would be outdated quickly, but I also enjoyed the amount of content available within the books.

I have no clue about the answer to your question - but considering Square Enix hardly seems to know what they're doing in XIV right now (or they haven't told us yet) I doubt any guide-making company has an insider scoop. I think the XI guides were easier to make because all the data was available from the Japanese client. I'd say: I doubt it, but I could be wrong.

There were actually three Brady FFXI publications. The third was an atlas that came out roughly when the third expansion did.

The important thing to remember about the Brady guides is that they were pretty bad. As far as facts go they were accurate enough (when they were released, as mentioned above an MMO guide is out of date when the next update hits), however, once you got beyond plain facts the advice given in those guides was pretty terrible. The end result was a lot of very misguided players at the NA launch(es) who thought they had the inside scoop, but were in fact doing some things that in hindsight look pretty dumb.

Head over to the FFXI forums here and ask about the Brady guide. The responses in the past have always been hilarious.

Oh yeah. I forgot about the Atlas.

I had recently discovered ffximaps online though. ^^

Poor Atlas sales.

The brady guides had very little in accurate information. I never found advice that was actually bad. At the time of their publication WAR/WHM was the second best tank for levels 10-(insert level of utesumi: ichi) granted it blew chunks once utesumi became available. At that time PLD could tank.

As to a FFXIV guide goes I won't hold my breath SE beleives that we do not want to know how things work and what options we have.

also, if something goes wrong, pup is the easiest job to blame. You can keep one around just for that reason. If there's a mijin gakure and everyone dies, just blame the pup, he's used to it.

WAR/WHM was never the best tank for any level.

The Brady guide was useful for completing quests back when internet info was even worse. At the time it was fine, which is all it really needed to be.

I'd welcome a guide, but I doubt we'll get one.

Well, if you understand Japanese, there is an Eorzea Official Starting Guide published by SE.
Not really useful though, half the book is about the various options you can choose in character creation...

I had the guide for FFXI, and just as the others said above, it was utterly useless for anything other than seeing each races starting stats, and the maps.
