I havent been able to find anything and I'm not a dat digger, so I am just wondering if anyone knows if we will ever get a summoner class?

I have a lalafell con/thm that I would keep leveling if we were as I think lalafell would suit it more for some reason but if not I think I would spend more time on my Miqote.

I think it's guaranteed. People have posted pictures of some summons and if you've watched the opening movie there's indication of summoning there

I hope so, but there's still the possibility that the summons are going to be in the storyline and not be a part of a Summoner class.

I'm hoping for Summoner too though

I really hope a summoner class comes too. It was my favorite job in FFXI. I think right now the talk is that summons will be used in the storyline rather than as a class so my hopes are low right now. :(

It would have to work within the confines of the armoury system, so instead of asking if they will give us summoner we should be asking how. Anyone have any ideas how it might even work?

There's loads of options... books, relics (like holy symbols or whatever), special wands/staves, special weapons of any type honestly...

Spoiler:

Will we ever get summoner class? If you advance in the game right now, you will actually get a lot of information from which you could formulate the answer to this question. Sorry for being so vague, but I didn't want to provide an answer, just that it's out there, well in the game there.

Some old beastmaster class used a whip too.

I don't believe they will add "Summoner" simply because they are trying to stay away from any classes that are jobs from previous games. Lancer doesn't have Jump or wear dragon armor, Conjurer has both high level black and white magic, etc.

There are some special concerns when it comes to jobs that were built around a very specific function, such as Summoner or Bard, but there are a few ways to handle it without just bringing it in and calling it something different. I posted this a while back in a similar thread.

I wrote:
This was discussed quite a bit on the beta forum. Several ideas were mentioned, including giving summons to existing magic users (and those to come like arcanist), adding a new class that's like a hybrid (i.e. geomancy + summoning), ritual magic that takes several people to accomplish (this is alluded to for the amalj'aa summoning Ifrit), or people picking one summon as their own to use across all classes and possibly add another element of character growth (my personal favorite).

Basically, there are a lot of ways they can add summons without adding summoner.

I remember reading somewhere on these forums some months back, and forgive me for not being able to dig up the link, something about only the beastmen tribes getting summons. Not sure how accurate that is, though. I for one hope not, because I've always loved the idea (if not the implementation) of the job.

And I think if we did get summons...there's only one kind of weapon that would be appropriate. Special Crystals. In that respect, at least, XI and XIV seem to agree. Crystals are where it's at.

Isn't there an NPC bard in the Marauders' Guild in Limsa Lominsa?

As of the .dats right now there is nothing related to pets and Summons serve as Storyline only. If they would add summoner they would have to use new summons also since the ones in game are to big to be used. If it interest you the only mage classes in the .dats so far are a Party Buffer/Healer and a Blue Mage (Mystic/Archanist). Also if you think conjurer and thaumaturge are to a like, Conjurer will become a far better nuker while thaumaturge will get a lot more Debuffs.

My channel with FFXI battle music and hard to find songs that were not even released on Original Soundtracks.

I also plan on uploading FFXIV music when the game is released.

Not sure about Summoner, but the next 2 classes will probably be Arcane (discipline?) and Musketeer - both guilds are already located in Limsa Lominsa.

I highly doubt we will ever see a summoner class in FFXIV. Partially because I think its harder to fit into the weapon-master theme. I can't see summons being implemented in a way that they can be used by every class. And partially because I think the game will be playing catchup with what they have over the next few years, and likely die/end long before they start adding complex new jobs. I think we'll see a few arcanist/mystic, musketeer and probably some other DoW jobs.

Well, you(they,S-E, pick your pronoun) COULD do it like Tactics in that each summon isn't really a summon per se, it's more like a spell. For example maybe a lvl 10 summoner would learn Thunderbolt and it would summon Ramuh who would then use Thunderbolt and disappear. Stronger spells like Judgment Bolt could have a higher MP cost or perhaps even an HP and/or MP cost and completely drain stamina.

Yea this is what I was thinking too, I think that'd be pretty cool but I hope at the same time that these summons/spells are attainable through a quest line - some long questline that you go through and fight the summon in the end and he's yours if you beat it...I don't want them all learned upon reaching certain levels. Obviously in this case there would need to be more depth for the summoners, I don't know what kind of spells they would have but they would need to have something similar to all other classes in game so far.

I don't think will see one because the rank 38 storyline shows that if you pledge yourself to a summon. You get to summon one diety.

Could possibly be a weapon based attack with a cooldown that summons 1 Diety.

Dont know if I can stay away from this game if they add some type of Smn class in FFXIV :p

Smn is probably the only reason I play and have played FF games (^o^)/

I don't think it will, unless something is drastically altered in the story. A nameless friend who works for SE said as much, and now that I know that the Eidolons are aligned with corresponding beastmen races I can see why. I think that it might be possible that they will make a summoner job that doesn't necessarily summon the actual eidolons, or summons somehow weakened versions of them. The more I think about it the more I think they will do the latter. If they don't find a way to make it work, they are wasting an opportunity to make the game better and more appealing, and I think it will only hurt them.

why cant summons be equipped as spells?
like equip titan instead of stone III, but if your not SMN main at the moment then titan would be somewhat gimped in its own way.
a summon as a one time hit spell to me isnt a summon at all, its just a flashier one hit spell.

If summoner were to become a class which I hope it does, I think I would prefer that only summoners could summon them. Kind of like some of the THM and CON spells can only be used by them and no other class.

As I feel if everyone could summon them on any class it would be exploited to a degree.

yeah i dont think sommoner (if introduced) will be limited to juuuust sommons.
i think it will have sommons but have a a few handfuls of other spells and abilites that can be swapped out for other classes.
maybe using a summon as a DOW or something will do a one hit summon spell and SMNs can have them out and about. idk, lots of ways they could do it, heres to hoping.

It's doable. There are a number of "main class only" skills for each class now. I'd expect the same for summons...

This time though, they definately need to give SMN skills that are useful to other classes, to keep the armory system legit.

I hate to be the one to do this, but I should really remind you that this is how all summons functioned in the earlier FF games. You cast, you summon, it hurts stuff, and it goes away. Final Fantasy VII is considered one of the best FF games ever made, and does the exact same thing.

That doesn't mean I'd like that to be how summons work in FFXIV. I loved having summons out in FFXI, even if they weren't all-powerful. They still looked imposing and at level 70 had some deadly skills you could use. Sure they drained mana like crazy and had a lousy damage/MP ratio but they were fun to have if not wholly efficient.

I will be mortified if this game doesn't include Summoners. If there's one thing this game needs right now it's a well-defined class.
